. FAA Requires UAS (Drone) Registry

On December 21, 2015, the Federal Aviation Administration began requiring everyone to register UAS’s, unmanned aerial systems. Sometimes they are referred as drones. The owner – whether it’s a new purchase or a UAS that’s been flying for years – must register a name, a physical address and an email address with the FAA. The decision was backed by a task force of manufacturers, retailers, pilots and hobbyists. Buyers must register UAS’s before their first flight. The registry for UAS’s weighing at least 9 ounces marks the latest balancing act for federal regulators who are trying to keep the skies safe as USA’s increasingly share airspace with passenger planes. FAA guidelines say hobbyists should fly UAS’s no higher than 400 feet, within sight of the operator during daylight and at least five miles from the nearest airport, unless they have special permission from the air-traffic control tower. The registration site is available at: www.faa.gov/uas/registration. The registration costs $5 for an unlimited number of aircraft and will be valid for three years.

Experience Coming

The Kansas 4-H SpaceTech Program and the Kansas Cosmosphere located in Hutchinson are again teaming up to provide fun, hands-on and science-based programming for Kansas 4-H Youth Development. This second program will feature “Unmanned Aerial Systems.” The experience will begin Friday, March 31, at 4 p.m., and will end on Saturday, April 1, 4 p.m. Cost will be $110 for youth between 9-18-years old and $110 for all adult participants. Registration includes three meals, two breaks, and an overnight stay. Program topics include: a tour of the Cosmosphere, a UAS flying challenge inside the Cosmosphere, an outside UAS demonstration (weather permitting), FAA regulations and compliance of registering private and commercial UAS’s, guest speaker, UAS applications in agriculture, fixed and rotor wings UAS’s, plus much more.

This Cosmosphere collaboration is designed to be an adult-child experience, where 4-H members and adults can interact and learn from these fun and educational experiences. The program will include overnight indoor camping at the Cosmosphere located in Hutchinson, KS, (bring your own sleeping bag, air mattress, pillow, towel and toiletry items). The experience is open to 4-H members, parents, grandparents, volunteer 4-H leaders, and KSRE staff.

Kansas 4-H Dog Judges’

Certification Training

Registration Open

The 2017 Kansas 4-H Dog Judges’ Certification training will be held January 20-22, 2017, in Salina, Kansas. Beginning the training on Friday evening has allowed participants in one weekend to be trained in and certified in the four dog phases of showmanship, obedience, agility and rally obedience of the Dog Care and Training Project. New judges can be certified and returning judges can get a refresher and be re-certified. This is also a good opportunity for local dog project leaders and older 4-H members to observe the training and better understand how they will be judged at invitational and the Kansas State Fair 4-H Dog Show.

Participants must be 16-years-old and up to attend this certification and training. For full details, visit: http://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/volunteer-trainings/dog-leader/index.html. To register, visit: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScI3TuwLpfzqz9chjRgPGRMai30z9NLYXgfNMAG-ob2spxJ7w/viewform. Apply Now for Hosting Exchangees in 2017

Families interested in hosting a 4-H exchange for the school year beginning in August 2017 being identified in January, 2017 when the first information on students becomes available. This will give the opportunity to indicate preferences before many have been selected. Possibilities include high school students from Japan (Labo or LEX), Korea and Mexico (LEX Mexico) through States’ 4-H

Academic Year Program (AYP). They are 15-18 and will attend the local high school for their sophomore, junior or senior year. Families provide food, lodging and transportation. The students’ natural families provide their school and personal expenses. States’ 4-H also has a contract with the U.S. State Department to coordinate students who are part of the FLEX (Future Leaders Exchange) Program which is funded by our government to give students from Eastern European and Eurasian countries, once part of the communist bloc, the opportunity to experience democratic systems while living with U.S. families and attending school. We urge any family (no requirements regarding children’s ages or even having children) who might be interested to contact Mary Kay Munson, State AYP Coordinator, to learn more about State’s 4-H AYP exchanges and get applications and procedures for applying. She is at 785-238-3631 or [email protected]. Information on students who are available to host usually begins arriving at the end of January.

Summer one-month hosting opportunities through States’ 4-H available in 2017 will include 15-18 year olds representing Norway 4H or Costa Rica’s 4-S and 12-15 year olds from Japan (Labo and LEX) or South Korea (Korean 4-H). These families are expected to have a child of the same gender and near the age of the exchangee to serve as host sibling. The Norwegians and Cost Ricans will be in Kansas late June to late July and the Japanese and Koreans will be with Kansas families July 23 August 17. Families can apply now. Go to: http://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/global-citizenship/host-family-information/index.html, where you will find a link to the States’ 4-H Host Family on line application. Contact Mary Kay Munson about hosting Norwegians, Costa Ricans or South Koreans. Rose Scott may also be contacted at 785-388-2009 or [email protected].

Families interested in hosting an IFYE this summer may complete applications now as well. IFYE’s are a little older and are available for 2-3 week hosting periods staying with two or more families throughout the summer. Not all partner countries have been identified yet, but we expect delegates from Austria, Germany, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Taiwan and Wales. We will let interested families know when we get information on this year’s applicants. If families have a gender, hosting time or country preference, it would be to their advantage to complete an application early. Go to the same web page included above for States’ 4-H exchanges, but go to the bottom of the page where IFYE Exchanges are included, and download the fillable pdf. document, save and complete it on your computer. Then email the completed form to Mary Kay Munson, state coordinator. Contact her with any questions at 785-238-3631 or [email protected].

PRODUCT: STRAW BALES FOR NATIVITY SCENES I believe selling bales of straw would be a good business idea for right before the holidays. Because I live on a farm, I can do chores in exchange for bales of straw from my family’s wheat field. People like to make fall decorations with a bale of straw and pumpkins. The straw could then be used for a nativity display for Christmas. Once the holiday season is over, they could use their bale of straw against the foundation of their house for insulation or with cold weather coming, the straw could also be used for bedding for dog houses or for other animals. The people I would sell to would be people that live in my community that don’t live on farms. I would also sell to my grandma and to other family members.
