Dear Friends of the RPO:

“Moving Forward” was the inspiration behind the Rochester Philharmonic’s pivotal and productive 2013-2014 fiscal year. The challenges and opportunities before us gave everyone in the organization a chance to take a hard look not only at where we are and where we’ve been, but also at what is possible.

The Orchestra’s 91st season was brimful of concerts and special occasions described in detail in the following pages of this report, but two major events stand out as proof of the RPO’s forward momentum: the naming of Rochester native Ward Stare as our twelfth Music Director in July; and the Orchestra’s triumphant return to Carnegie Hall in May.

Ward’s appointment is symbolic on many levels. An alumnus of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra whose career advanced rapidly from The Juilliard School to the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and then on to the Aspen Music Festival, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Saint Louis Symphony, Ward now returns to Rochester to lead his hometown orchestra into a new era of artistic excellence and community engagement. As we release this report to coincide with the Annual Meeting, we are less than two weeks away from the official announcement of Ward Stare’s Inaugural Season in 2015-2016. We are thrilled to welcome Ward to the RPO family and can think of no more powerful symbol of an organization that is moving forward.

May 7, 2014, was a proud day for the Rochester Philharmonic and for all of Rochester, as the RPO returned to the world’s most famous concert stage—Carnegie Hall—for the first time in nearly 30 years. Every corner of the organization and the Rochester community rallied to make this enormous undertaking possible: 250 performers on stage and more than 800 Rochesterians in attendance; more than two dozen sponsors; VIP travel packages and special events—all culminating in a dramatic concert performance of Howard Hanson’s rarely performed opera Merry Mount, earning an enthusiastic ovation from the audience and the enthusiastic praise of the local and national press.

Equally important to the organization’s future was the work of the Sustainability Task Force. Following three intensive months of study, their report was presented to the Board in November 2013 and discussed in depth at a Board retreat the following month. The Task Force report offered a detailed analysis of the RPO’s financial condition and laid out specific strategies to move the organization into a position of financial stability. In the spring of 2014, the Board approved a Moving Forward Plan—a detailed action plan focused on improving the organization’s fiscal health.

From the Board Chair and President & CEO

It is clear that this organization needs to change; continuing along the same path will not lead to fiscal stability. The Board and management are aligned in the strategies required, and we are proud of the progress we have made since the Board’s deliberations more than a year ago. Many of these new initiatives involve building internal infrastructure to drive revenue in our marketing and development operations. This year’s independent, non-subscription concerts—from Audra McDonald and Kaddish to La Traviata and Video Games Live™—are other signs of the changes under way at the RPO.

We recognize above all that the RPO is YOUR orchestra. Our audience and our community are central to who we are, where we’ve been in the past 92 years, and where we are heading. As we map out our course for the future, we want to do so with you and the broader community in mind—which is why we value so highly the feedback we receive along the way. In the fall of 2013, we invited our patrons to give us their thoughts on their concert experience. You did—thousands of surveys were returned—and we listened! We are grateful for the direct feedback we’ve received on so many aspects of the RPO, from our programming mix to our box office and front of house operations to the RPO website.

True progress is only possible if we are all working together. In that spirit, we must express our gratitude to the musicians and staff of the RPO, not only for the superb performances they play and produce night after night, but also for the faith they continue to demonstrate in the future of this organization. Once again this season, our players and staff have accepted concessions in wages and benefits to give the Moving Forward Plan time to take root and begin to yield measurable results.

Whether you’re a subscriber or a single-ticket buyer, a donor or a volunteer, a staff member or a musician—or perhaps someone who belongs in several of these categories—we thank you for the role you played in the life of the RPO in the past year. We look forward to moving forward into the RPO’s future with you.

A Year in the RPOSEPTEMBER/OCTOBERThe RPO’s 91st season opened with an evening of classical favorites, including Mahler’s First Symphony, under the baton of guest conductor Jun Märkl with guest violinist Jennifer Koh (1 & 2), who performed the popular Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. In October, the RPO Pops Series opened with a Broadway revue featuring The Midtown Men (3), four stars from the original cast of Jersey Boys, under the baton of guest conductor Ron Spigelman.

NOVEMBERAs buzz for the RPO’s upcoming performance of Hanson’s Merry Mount at Carnegie Hall began to build, Rochester Mayor Thomas Richards presented the RPO with a joint proclamation from the City and Monroe County to commemorate May 7, 2014 as a day of celebration at a press conference announcing details about the Carnegie Hall concert (4 & 5).

RPO Principal Oboe Erik Behr (6) performed Strauss’ virtuosic concerto in an evening that also featured Rachmaninoff’s Second Symphony.

DECEMBERGuest conductor and harpsichordist James Feddeck (7) led two holiday performances of Bach’s Magnificat, featuring the select Eastman Chorale directed by William Weinert, as well as vocal soloists from the Eastman School of Music.

JANUARYAtlanta-based Cirque de la Symphonie (8) returned to perform jaw-dropping, yet elegant aerial feats and acrobatics with music by the RPO and conductor Jeff Tyzik. Later that month, RPO trumpeter Paul Shewan served as guest conductor for the first-ever Side by Side: RPO & Community Orchestra Concert, sponsored by the City of Rochester and featuring 115 amateur musicians from the community (9). The repertoire included a program of Liszt, Bizet, and Dvořák.

FEBRUARYThe RPO’s Black History Month celebration featured an evening of Gershwin and Ellington, with Van Cliburn silver medalist Joyce Yang (10) and guest conductor Michael Morgan (11). The program included a special performance of two movements from Symphony No. 3 by Florence Beatrice Price, who was considered the first African American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer, as well as former Eastman School of Music faculty member and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Joseph Schwantner’s New Morning for the World, “Daybreak of Freedom.” The work included the immortal words of Martin Luther King Jr. with recently-elected Mayor Lovely Warren as narrator (12).

Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik celebrated 20 years with the RPO with a weekend of celebratory concerts in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on March 20 and 21. The concerts also featured the talents of legendary trumpeter and bandleader Doc Severinsen of The Tonight Show Band, as well as trumpeter Allen Vizzutti and trombonist Jim Pugh, Tyzik’s fellow Eastman grads and long-time collaborators. Tyzik worked closely with Doc Severinsen on a multitude of projects, including orchestrating many of the great bandleader’s symphony orchestra programs, and producing a GRAMMY Award-winning album, The Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinsen, Vol. 1.

Calling the celebration a “once-in-a-lifetime concert,” the program featured many of Tyzik’s original arrangements, as well as other Pops favorites. Tyzik was appointed Principal Pops Conductor of the RPO in 1994. In addition to his work in Rochester, he is also the Principal Pops Conductor for five other symphony orchestras: Detroit, Dallas, Seattle, Oregon (Portland), and Florida (Tampa/St. Petersburg).

“I never thought it would get to this point,” said Tyzik, of his career success. “Life has exceeded my expectations.”

In his 20 years with the RPO, Tyzik has written more than 200 arrangements, orchestrations, and compositions for orchestra. A consummate musician, Tyzik regularly appears as a guest conductor in the RPO’s classical subscription series. He also has been commissioned to compose original works for orchestra, such as his latest orchestral suite: Images: Musical Impressions of an Art Gallery, which the RPO debuted in 2012 and will perform again in May 2015 with the added talents of Rochester City Ballet and its artistic director and choreographer, Jamey Leverett.

A native of Hyde Park, New York, Tyzik began his life in music at nine years of age, when he first picked up a cornet. He studied both classical and jazz throughout high school, and went on to earn both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied composition/arranging with Radio City Music Hall’s Ray Wright and jazz studies with Chuck Mangione.

Jeff Tyzik celebrates 20 years

On March 23, longtime RPO supporters Tom and Nan Hildebrandt hosted a fundraising event to honor Jeff Tyzik’s 20 years of service to the RPO. Doc Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti, members of the RPO family, friends and donors were in attendance, along with representatives from Wegmans Food Markets—longtime title sponsor of the Pops Series—and more than $31,000 was raised in honor of Jeff’s milestone anniversary.

After an absence of nearly 30 years, the RPO made a triumphant return to the world’s most famous concert stage on May 7, 2014. The RPO presented a concert performance of Howard Hanson’s opera Merry Mount to an enthusiastic audience of 1,700 (including more than 800 Rochesterians waving souvenir lilac hankies!) at the Spring For Music Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York City. This grand performance featured some 250 performers, combining the talents of guest conductor Michael Christie; a cast of 17 acclaimed soloists and talented area singers; the Eastman-Rochester Chorus, directed by Dr. William Weinert; and Bach Children’s Chorus of Nazareth College, directed by Karla Krogstad.

The Democrat and Chronicle hailed the RPO’s performance of this rarely performed opera with a local connection as “impressive” and “executed brilliantly, with a full and evocative tone that brought Hanson’s profound gifts as orchestrator to the fore.” The New York Times praised Christie for presenting a “well-prepared and meticulously executed performance,” and the New York Classic Review lauded the orchestra and vocalists for a “thrilling” performance that “sent out enormous waves of sounds that shook the rafters yet never seemed like empty bombast.”

Hanson’s Merry Mount was chosen in part because 2014 marked the 80th anniversary of the opera’s 1934 stage premiere at the Metropolitan Opera. Additionally, it had been 90 years since Hanson began his tenure as director of the Eastman School of Music in 1924 (and 50 years since his retirement in 1964).

Spring For Music was a four-year festival at Carnegie Hall which began in 2011, celebrating and exhibiting the quality and creativity of North American orchestras. Over the course of its 91-year history, the RPO has performed at Carnegie Hall 16 times. The last performance was in 1985 under the direction of former Music Director David Zinman.

Celebratory events surrounding the Carnegie Hall concert included a Lincoln Center tour and luncheon at Lincoln Ristorante; a cocktail party for donors and special guests the night before the concert, hosted by former RPO Board Chair Peter Faber and his wife, Joan, and featuring a musical interlude by Principal Clarinet Kenneth Grant and Principal Keyboard Joseph Werner; and a post-concert celebration at the magical Russian Tea Room for the Merry Mount cast, musicians, sponsors, and other VIP guests.

On July 29, 2014, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra Board Chair Dawn Lipson and President & CEO Charles Owens announced Ward Stare as the orchestra’s 12th Music Director in 91 years, effective September 1, 2014. His appointment was formally announced at City Hall in front of orchestra, staff, and board members; local media; arts leaders and RPO donors, sponsors and patrons; and Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren. Additionally, for the first time in RPO history, the event was streamed live online at rpo.org.

“I feel so fortunate to have grown up in Rochester, where I was exposed to the RPO and all the wonderful things that this vibrant community has to offer,” said Stare. “I look forward to giving back by finding new and exciting ways for this world-class orchestra to connect with diverse Rochester audiences.”

A Rochester native and alumnus of the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Stare has been described as “one of the hottest young conductors in America” by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and “a rising star in the conducting firmament” by the Chicago Tribune. He recently completed his tenure as Resident Conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra (2008-2012), made his conducting debuts with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and Washington National Opera, and conducted his third major production at Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Stare was the recipient of both the Robert J. Harth Conductor Prize (2006) and the Aspen Conducting Prize (2007) before spending the 2007-08 season as a League of American Orchestras Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has studied conducting with former RPO Music Director David Zinman, János Fürst and Jorma Panula as well as working with Michel Merlet in composition and musical analysis.

“Ward’s astonishing successes early in his career demonstrate his readiness to assume his place in the long line of distinguished conductors who have led the RPO over the past 90 years,” said Owens. “It is clear to me that he will be an inspiring leader, a model collaborator, and a game-changing ambassador for the RPO and for symphonic music, embracing the use of technology to deliver our musical product in ways that will be compelling to a new generation of listeners.”

Programs for ChildrenEducation and community engagement have been at the core of the RPO’s mission since its founding in 1922. George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak Company and the world-renowned Eastman School of Music, believed that all Rochester residents could enrich their lives through musical learning, from pre-school through college and beyond.

This dedication to lifelong learning continues today. In 2000, the orchestra named Michael Butterman as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach—the first endowed position of its kind in the country. In the 2013–14 season, Michael Butterman’s title was changed to Principal Conductor for Education and Community Engagement to reflect the Orchestra’s renewed commitment to more deeply engage people from all backgrounds and all walks of life in our community. Also last season, RPO musicians performed four orKIDStra family concerts as well as educational concerts for more than 12,000 Rochester-area schoolchildren.

Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra: This 100-member symphony orchestra is composed of advanced-level student musicians in grades eight through twelve who live in seven counties in the greater Rochester region and represent 27 schools, plus home-schooled students. 2013-14 marked the RPYO’s 43rd season as well as David Harman’s 21st and final year as music director. Upon his retirement in May 2014, the RPYO named him Music Director Emeritus, honoring him for musically inspiring more than 800 young musicians and enhancing the musical excellence of this esteemed community cultural and educational institution.

orKIDStra: These Sunday afternoon RPO concerts are designed to delight kids and their families. In the 2013-14 season, Michael Butterman introduced youngsters to teamwork in The Orchestra Olympics; a creative narrative in Tales of Russia; Lemony Snicket’s The Composer is Dead; and the fundamentals of music in Picardy Penguin: Let’s Build the Tower of Music!

Tiny Tots Concerts: These 40-minute concerts for preschoolers and kindergarteners are presented at schools, houses of worship, and other public venues. In Mr. Butterman’s Neighborhood in May 2014, Michael Butterman introduced children to the instrumental families of the orchestra, as well as some basic musical concepts, through interviews and demonstrations by our own musicians.

Primary Concerts: This series provides live orchestra performances in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre for first- through third-grade students in the Rochester City School District and surrounding areas. In February 2014, students explored the concept of rhythm in Feel the Beat. Special guest vocal percussionist/beatboxer Shodekeh joined the orchestra for both shows.

Intermediate Concerts: These concerts in Kodak Hall for fourth-, fifth-, and sixth graders are tied to language arts, social studies, and other areas of the students’ curriculum. In March 2014, students explored the ways different art forms influence each other. “Inspiration” showcased Jackie Hager (a 12-year-old cellist from Hochstein), a live artist, as well as poetry and artwork submitted by the students prior to the performance.

Each season, the RPO presents nearly 40 community engagement concerts that serve a diverse population. Many are offered free of charge. These include the Around the Town series and summer concerts at Ontario Beach, Frontier Field, and in Downtown Rochester. The RPO also traveled well beyond Monroe County (see map), with concerts as far away as Arrowhead Park in the Adirondacks and Carnegie Hall in Manhattan. Here are some of this season’s highlights:

Your RPO in the Community

• For the free Around the Town concerts, held in October 2013 and May 2014, the RPO partnered with the following community venues to present six free concerts: Greece Baptist Church, Monroe Community Hospital (Rochester), Pittsford-Sutherland High School, Roberts Wesleyan College Cultural Life Center (North Chili), Rush-Henrietta High School, and St. Joseph’s Church (Penfield).

• RPO ensembles performed concerts at Camp Good Days and Special Times and Wilmot Cancer Center at URMC, as well as nine Rochester schools.

• More than 100 instrumentalists from the community participated in the RPO’s first Side-By-Side Concert at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre in January 2014, playing alongside the musicians of the RPO under the direction of Paul Shewan.

• The RPO’s annual production of The Nutcracker, with Rochester City Ballet and Bach Children’s Chorus, featured 175 local children.

• The Gala Holiday Pops concerts featured 180 area students from 36 different schools in the Festival High School Chorale and more than 200 students age 8-14 from 24 different schools in the RPO’s first-ever Community Children’s Chorus.

• The RPO performed three concerts in Ford Hall at Ithaca College as part of the RPO’s strategic plan to expand the Orchestra’s reach beyond Rochester.

• Winners of the RPO Musicians’ Awards for Outstanding Music Educators were recognized during the Philharmonics concert on May 22. A committee of RPO musicians and area music educators select the award winners, and the concert is dedicated to those educators who inspire, encourage, and challenge young musicians on a daily basis. In 2014, four music educators from the community were honored for their dedication to educational and musical excellence: Sheila Sullivan Buck (Crane Elementary School, Rush-Henrietta), Outstanding Classroom Specialist; Liz Banner (Brockport High School), Outstanding Choral Director; Jeffrey Greene (Greece Olympia High School), Outstanding Band Director; and Tammy Sutliff (Pittsford-Sutherland High School), Outstanding String Director.

• Seven dedicated volunteers were recognized for their service to the RPO at the 22nd annual Volunteer Recognition Night held at Temple B’rith Kodesh on May 13. The recipients were nominated by past and present RPO volunteers and community leaders and were chosen based on several categories: Bob and Jo Kanis (theatre), Melissa Matson (musician), Fred Weingarten (RPYO), Ruth Cahn (Rochester Philharmonic League), Margaret-Ann Milne (Education), and Lori Friedman (special projects).
