RC Funding OptionsThere is no getting around it – going to school is a big investment to make. Thankfully, there are many options available to help you pay for school. Talk to our experi-enced Financial Aid Officers that can help you navigate through all the options that are available to you.

Pay your tuition in full by the end of the first week of your program and receive a discount.

You may also pay your tuition in interest-free monthly payments.

bank or credit union financing

It’s not a bad idea to consult your bank or credit union about school tuition financing. You can use

savings or may qualify for a student line of credit. If you have RRSPs, you can use money from the

RRSPs to pay tuition. Your bank or credit union would have the criteria for this option.

This diploma program is designed to prepare

you with the knowledge and skills to provide

physical, psychological and social assistance

to individuals across the lifespan. Upon

graduation, you will be able to provide safe

and competent care for those in need. You will

be able to pursue meaningful work in a public

or private setting. This career choice will allow

you to make a difference in the lives of others.

Adolescent Growth and DevelopmentThis module focuses on typical development from late childhood (age 12) through the early stages of adulthood (19). Special emphasis will be given to puberty, sexual development and awareness, and physical, cognitive and social development. As well, you will be introduced to dysfunctions and interventions to human development during this crucial period of life, such as peer pressure, teen pregnancy, etc.

Aging and Psychosocial ApplicationsThis module focuses on the aging process. Emphasis will be on the mental and social aspects of aging. Topics will include information processing, memory, intelligence, personality theo-ries, relationships, retirement, and death/dying.

Aging with Chronic Illness and Developmental DisabilitiesThis module focuses on the aging process. Emphasis will be on the physical, mental, and social aspects of aging. Canada’s Medicare system will be explored in addition to social work with persons with disabilities.

Applied Behavioural AnalysisIn this course you will acquire the knowledge and skills to implement an Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) care plan. While emphasis will be given to the practice of ABA with autistic chil-dren, the skills will be generalized for use with adults and in situations with children where be-haviour modification would be appropriate. In addition, the course will address the theoretical and political controversies in the field of Applied Behavioural Analysis.

Assisting with ADLs and SafetyThis module deals with the role of the Special Education Classroom Attendant with respect to assisting special needs children in the classroom setting. The course will cover the role of a special needs assistant in preschools/daycares and elementary schools with regard to assist-ing with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) and safety for these paraprofessionals. Topics include infection control, how to assist with ADL’s as well as how to feed, toilet and safely lift a child with a disability.

Child Growth and DevelopmentThis course presents a comprehensive overview of the developmental changes that take place from conception to twelve years. Emphasis of the course will be on the individual needs of each child. It highlights current trends and issues in research, cultural influences, and ex-amines variations in development. This course will also provide an in-depth study of social, cultural and environmental issues that affect the development of the child.

Counselling and Support Techniques for AdultsThis module will focus on acquiring basic interviewing and communi-cation skills in working with clients. The active listening and problem-solving approach will be presented. You will explore the concept of rela-tionship as the critical ingredient to effective care.

Counselling Techniques for Children & Youth IThis course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to assist children dealing with problems and stress. The focus will be on acquiring a basic understanding of the counselling process, includ-ing interviewing and communication skills. Emphasis will be given to understanding the basic affective, behavioral, and cognitive theories of counselling children and youth.

Counselling Techniques for Children & Youth IIThis course is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to assist children and youth dealing with special concerns. The focus will be on acquiring a basic understanding of at-risk issues. Prevention, early intervention, and other treatment frameworks will be presented.

Families and CultureThis module will examine traditional families, modern families and families in transition from a multicultural perspective. Emphasis will be given to the strengths of families and the challenges faced by families in our modern society.

Human Resources for Children, Youth & Families This course introduces the learner to various professional social worker roles (individual, group, community child protection, non-profit/for prof-it organizations) within the human services field. Topics include Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act. You will explore the roles of fami-lies and caregivers in providing care for children & youth. Techniques for developing partnerships with family and community resources will be explored and the development of positive and respectful relation-ships with all types of families will be discussed. You will be introduced to anti-racist social work as well as sexual and gender diversity.

Key ApplicationsThis course provides you with a basic understanding of computer hard-ware and software, as well as an introduction to the Windows 7 operat-ing system. Office applications include word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, as well as browsing the Internet and general manage-ment of files and folders.

Mental HealthThis module deals with mental illness. Diagnostic overviews, causes, occurrences, and theories of the more common forms of mental illness will be discussed as well as management and treatment issues. You will gain insights into diverse issues associated with mental illness.

Palliative CareYou will be encouraged to explore person-centred practice as it relates to the common challenges in end-of-life care. You will be invited to ex-plore the essential knowledge, skills, and attributes needed to provide excellent care to those who are dying, and their families. This course focuses on the development of self-awareness, increased understand-ing of others and development of effective interpersonal communica-tion skills that can be used when caring for dying persons. You will be encouraged to become more aware of communication techniques that demonstrate personal awareness, respect and active listening

skills. You will be introduced to and participate in lab practice as sched-uled, a variety of practical skills to help manage some of the common challenges in end-of-life care.

Paraprofessionals in EducationThis module deals with the role of the Educational Assistant. This course will cover the role of a special needs assistant in preschools/day-cares and the role of a child care worker in elementary schools. Topics include the structure of education systems, developing and implement-ing lesson plans, using and adapting instructional aids, and enhancing classroom dynamics.

Professional Skills for Fieldwork in CanadaThis module deals with various professional roles within the human services field. Topics include ethics identification, health and safety in the workplace, professional associations, developing partnerships with community resources, social work with minority groups, and the his-tory and impact of changes in the community that impact the industry. Techniques for developing partnerships with community resources will be explored and community resources available for possible em-ployment will be identified.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation & Care PlanningIn this module, you will acquire knowledge about the model of occu-pational performance and therapy in mental health. An understanding of different strategies for working with families dealing with mental ill-nesses will be provided. New research on Attachment Theory and sub-sequent clinical programs that focus on attachment will be learned.

Self-CareThis course deals with the elements of a healthy, balanced professional and personal lifestyle. You will learn guidelines and strategies that will help you evaluate your own personal wellness. The holistic approach will cover physical, emotional, self-awareness and social issues. Special emphasis will be given to burn-out prevention and to addressing the particular challenges of being a caregiver.

Understanding AddictionsThis module will allow you to acquire the knowledge and understand-ing of the nature of addiction. You will become familiar with the major substances of abuse and the impact on the body. You will be introduced to the etiological theories of substance abuse and will focus on the is-sues relating to treatment and relapse prevention strategies. From a pro-vincial perspective, the course will focus on treatment setting and plan-ning, as well as the continuum of care provided in the province.

Career SearchThis subject will prepare you to conduct a thorough employment search strategy that incorporates personal marketing, assessment of skill inventories, and an understanding of the job market in the relevant industry/sector. Throughout this course you will create or improve your resume, practice interview techniques, learn networking skills and learn how to successfully search and find career-related employment.

Industry PracticumThis three week practicum provides you with an opportunity to inte-grate the theory from the classroom into practice. The practicum offers you experience in working with individuals in a variety of community settings including residential, educational and vocational the supports individuals with mental, emotional and physical disabilities.

Health Care Aide ChallengePLAR Process for obtaining HCA certificate

If you are currently employed as a Health Care Aide, Personal Sup-

port Worker, Nursing Attendant or if you are an out-of-province

trained HCA who do not possess a Government of Alberta recog-

nized certificate and would like to obtain one, the Robertson Col-

lege Health Care Aide Challenge program might be for you. Our

HCA PLAR process will allow you to utilize your skills and knowl-

edge to obtain your certificate.

1. Self-Assessment And Analysis As an applicant, you will be required to complete a self-assess-

ment. This self-assessment lists the course learning outcomes

and will require you to determine your level of proficiency in each

one.

2. Creation Of An Individualized Study PlanFrom this self-assessment, Robertson’s education department will

identify knowledge and skill gaps and create an individualized

study/training plan.

3. Challenge Of The Course’s Written Exam If the self-assessment indicates thorough competency and knowl-

edge of the subject, you may be required to challenge the course

exam in a proctored environment. An 80% grade is required to

pass. The HCA certificate consists of 7 courses. You will be re-

quired to challenge / pass all 7 courses in order to obtain your cer-

tificate.

4. Self-Study/Online Study (Or Site-Based Workshops)In the event that you are not successful in completing your chal-

lenge of the exam or if additional training is required for a course,

you will be provided with a self-study module and / or enrolled

in an online course to take the appropriate training. LPN’s or RN’s

identified by the employer may act as tutors for you under the

mentorship of Robertson educators. You may also be required to

attend a site-based learning session at a Robertson College facility.

5. Assessment Of Knowledge And SkillsWhen you achieve a passing grade on the individual course exam,

you will then be required to complete an in-lab skills assessment

facilitated by a Robertson College educator or an authorized off-

site RN or LPN.

Start your career in the exciting and rapidly growing health sector with this 24 week program. Graduates may find positions as Health Unit Clerks or Record Maintenance Clerks working in hospitals, medical offices or long term care facilities.

Anatomy, Physiology and Medical TerminologyLearn the fundamentals of medical terminology including word components, definitions, spelling, pronunciation and abbreviations. This course is an introduction to medical terminology, anatomy and physiology of the human body.

Business CommunicationsThis course develops written and oral communication skills. You will learn to write and speak in a business environment with con-fidence and ease! Grammar, spelling and sentence structure are reviewed and you will be able to communicate in writing, through email and fax as well as on other types of office equipment.

Business Etiquette and ProfessionalismThis course will introduce you to the concepts and practices of proper etiquette in a business and professional environment. You will learn etiquette and protocol for telephone and in-person inter-action. Multi-cultural challenges and online etiquette will also be covered.

First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI)As part of the program, you will attain your First Aid / CPR and NVCI certifications.

Health Unit Clerk ProceduresThis fundamental course provides the knowledge and skills need-ed to accurately manage the admission, transfer, and discharge procedures for patients. Also included are postmortem procedures, recording vital signs, ordering supplies, filing, infection control, emergencies, and any special services required.

KeyboardingYou will learn proper keyboarding skills in this course. This course will also focus on formatting skills and increasing keyboarding speed and accuracy.

Microsoft ExcelLearn about Microsoft Excel and gain skills to be able to use the pro-gram confidently. Some of the topics that will be covered are how to insert and format tables, sort and filter data in spreadsheets, create charts and illustrations and save data in specified formats.

Microsoft Word You will learn to create, edit and improve standard business docu-ments using Microsoft Word.

Orientation to Hospitals, Medical Centres and Health CareThis course will introduce you to the Health Care Delivery System including departments and services, members of the health care team, facility communication systems, and client care manage-ment.

The Patient’s Chart and Transcription of Doctor’s Orders Gain the knowledge to transcribe doctors’ orders, nursing treatment orders, dietary orders, medication orders, laboratory orders, diag-nostic imaging orders, and miscellaneous orders. The course will also focus on assembly of the patient’s chart.

Personal and Professional Skills In this course, you will examine the process of communication. Interpersonal behavior and communication skills will also be dis-cussed throughout the course.

Career Search TechniquesLearn the basic skills needed to successfully search for career-relat-ed employment.

Administrative Office ProceduresTopics included are human relations, time, work and resource man-agement; organization structure and office layout; office technology; front-line reception; aspects of business communication specific to the office professional; office commerce and record keeping; and professional development.

Anatomy, Physiology,Medical TerminologyThis course is designed to provide a functional knowledge of medi-cal terminology, anatomy & physiology.

Business CommunicationsWritten and oral communication skills are reviewed. You will learn to write and speak in a business environment with confidence and ease. Grammar, spelling, and sentence structure are extremely im-portant and will be covered. Communicating in writing, on com-puter, e-mail, faxes and other forms of office equipment will also be reviewed.

Clinical ProceduresFocus is on the development of professional competency in clini-cal skills performed in medical offices including: patient medical history gathering and patient assessment which is then communi-cated to the nurse or physician, obtaining and recording vital signs, obtaining capillary blood specimens, radiology and diagnostic im-aging, patient positioning, motor testing, sensory testing, and assist-ing with minor office surgeries.

CPRYou will learn immediate response to cardiovascular pulmonary re-suscitation, first aid and wound care. Upon successful completion, you will become CPR Certified.

Customer ServiceThis course covers the basic concepts and current trends in the customer service industry. Special areas of emphasis include prob-lem solving, development of a customer service strategy, creating customer service systems, coping with challenging customers, cus-tomer retention and measuring satisfaction.

History, Law & EthicsAn overview of the history of medicine and medical assisting, types of medical, dental, and chiropractic practices, their roles, their phi-losophy, ethics, and legal responsibilities on a Provincial, Federal and National level.

Human Relations in a Medical OfficeThis course discusses professional behaviour in the workplace and interpersonal skills and human behaviour. You will learn skills to put aside personal issues and devote your attention to the patients in the office. The balance of life / work balance is discussed, how to maintain professional behaviour and compassion on a daily basis and understanding how important listening skills make you more effective. You will also learn how to communicate with patient’s family members and how friends and family members play a role in the health of the patient.

Introduction to Sales & MarketingThis module provides a foundation for customer service and also focuses on building life-long customer relationships through the development of positive customer care approaches. Students will develop skills needed to provide excellent customer service, sales and marketing.

Key ApplicationsThis module provides the knowledge and skills required to per-form functions common to all Microsoft Windows applications with an emphasis on the common functionality between the these Microsoft Office applications: Microsoft Word (advanced), Excel (advanced), and PowerPoint (intermediate), Access (introduction), Outlook (introduction). Aspects include the ability to start and exit either the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint application, modify the display of toolbars and other on-screen elements, use online help, and perform file management, editing, formatting and printing func-tions common to most Windows applications.

KeyboardingProper use of a keyboard is learned as well as developing keyboard-ing speed and accuracy.

Medical Office ProceduresThis course is designed to give an insight and knowledge of medical office procedures, systems, diagnostic coding for billing and proce-dures in the daily office schedule. The course prepares you in the area of EMR (electronic medical records) commonly seen in health care settings, office administration, patient relations, and telephone communications.

Medical TranscriptionMedical Transcription consists of study and preparation in the tran-scription of medical data. You will use letters, exam reports, opera-tive reports, history and physical reports, and chart notes to listen to and transcribe. Also included are basic English lessons on punctua-tion, grammar and formatting, as well as medical terminology spell-ing.

Career SearchThis course is designed around group activities to develop job hun-

tingtechniques, identify marketable education, training and skills,

and to recognize the uniqueness of a student’s strengths. The course

stresses assertiveness, the success of past students, and various

strategies to reveal the hidden job market. You will develop your

personal character profile and skills inventory to help you through

the creation of cover letters and resumes. You will also participate in

mock interviews to help evaluate your readiness for the job market.
