Flying Probe Test

The dimension of time in the test of electronic boards and modules hasa multi-faceted effect on the efficiency of the test process, and isfundamental in determining the added value it brings to the final product, which is paramount in today’s extremely competitive, global market.

Consider test program development time, test execution time, digitalcomponent programming time, handling time and, last but not least, thetime required to repair boards when the process has not beensufficiently monitored. Put all of this together with the challengespresented by the increasingly faster technological evolution of electronicproducts in terms of performance and cycle times, and it is easy to seethat the dimension of time is an essential factor in the equation.

The Pilot4D line of flying probe test systems offers a vast series ofsolutions that are designed to optimize the “time” dimension whilemaintaining the highest level of test quality.

INDUSTRY 4.0Information and the technology neededto collect and analyze data to obtain it, iskey to the successful digitalization of themanufacturing process, which is at theheart of the Industry 4.0 concept. The Pilot4D line has all of the capabilitiesneeded for implementation in anyFactory 4.0 scenario, providing thepossibility to plug in any proprietary orthird party information system to achievethe desired goals.

ADVANTAGES OF FLYING PROBE TEST:

DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURES FOR DIVERSE SOLUTIONS

The Pilot4D line offers architectural solutions, each oneoptimized for a specific type of applicative scenario:

Pilot4D L4 is a horizontal, “pass-through”solution. Completely compliant to the SMEMA protocol, ensuring complete automation of the in-line testprocess, it has an architecture which permits theintegration of additional pins and jigs to augment testcoverage or to integrate other processes, such as on-board programming (OBP) of digital devices.

Pilot4D V8 and Pilot4D M4 optimize the test of “double-side” electronic boards, which require stimulus andmeasurement on both sides of the UUT simultaneously, where a “single-side” approach is extremely limiting interms of test coverage. The use of 8 (V8) or 4 (M4)probes distributed on both sides of the Unit Under Test(UUT) enables full test coverage as well as faster test time, and the vertical architecture capitalizes on the effect ofgravity to minimize vibrations during testing, ensuringmaximum test precision and measurement stability.

THE PILOT4D LINE OF FLYING PROBETEST SYSTEMS ADDRESSESTHE FOURTH DIMENSION OF TEST: TIME

All of the Pilot4D systems include the hardware and software tools to acquire the geometric formation (warpage) of theUUT in order to implement the opportune corrections via software to ensure precise and controlled probing on even themost delicate contact points of very small, SMD component pads.

MANUFACTURING: the evolution ofthe test algorithms and strategiespresent in the VIVA software mean thatthe Pilot4D testers provide fast, highperformance production testing. Thediverse, integrated test technologiessuch as optical inspection, thermalanalysis, boundary scan, power-onfunctional test, and the possibility toinclude other processes such as on-board programming (OBP), allow theuser to streamline the various productionphases, optimizing process time.

REVERSE ENGINEERING (RE): the necessity of managing field returns is aconstant in today’s industy, and in some sectors, such as transportation, infrastructure, communication and defense, the repair returns are often older boardswhich do not have a complete set of documentation, schematics or construction data. The double-side solutions offered in the Pilot4D line are ideally suited to carry outreverse-engineering operations, and include all of the necessary software tools toenable the reconstruction of the electrical schematics and the CAD data of the boardunder repair, to facilitate fault detection and repair, and to produce thedocumentation necessary for legacy support of the product.

PROTOTYPING AND NPI: byexploiting the versatility of the Pilot4Dhardware and software, it ispossible to obtain immediate datafrom the tests of prototypes, avoiding costs and time for buildingpreliminary fixtures or test benches, ensuring maximum fault coverage inthe minimum time.

REPAIR: There are different types ofrequirements for diagnosing faultyboards, depending on the characteristicsof the boards themselves and the specificrepair situation (manufacturing defects, field returns, repair depot, etc.). The Pilot4D line has an extensive tool setdeveloped to address all of the repairscenarios, and the intrinsic flexibility ofthe flying probe test approach allows theuser to implement from one to all of thetest techniques available, to optimize therepair process and results.

PILOT4D: 4 TEST ENVIRONMENTS

MANUFACTURING, REPAIR, REVERSE ENGINEERING, PROTOTYPING and NEWPRODUCT INTRODUCTION (NPI), are typically the 4 environments where the Pilot 4Dsolutions are implemented.

The Seica VIP platform software, VIVA, common to all of the Pilot4D systems, allows a completelyversatile test approach, from simple ICT to functional tests, from automatic, net-oriented tests to the

reconstruction of the data and electrical schematics of boards coming from the field.

THE AUTOMATED SOLUTION

In the vision of the Industry 4.0 factory of the future, theimplementation of a highly automated, technologicallyadvanced and reliable production line is essential.

The Pilot4D V8 is part of the vision: in the pass-through version, with dedicated loadersand unloaders, it is the operator-free test solution for the manufacturing environment.

PILOT4D Options

LED TESTThe LED sensor option is used fortesting the LEDs present on the UUT.The UUT is powered on, and theLED sensor measures luminosity, color, saturation and frequencyspectrums of the LEDs, operating inthe visible and infrared light rangeof wavelengths.

HD CAMERAS

The Pilot4D systems are equipped with highdefinition color cameras which, together withnew, sophisticated software algorithms, enablean advanced level of optical inspection of theUUT, complementing the electrical tests with theverification of presence/absence, polarity. In addition they are used for automaticcentering of fiducials, reading barcodes andfor the acquisition of the board image foroffline programming development and supportduring fault diagnostics and repair.

MARKERThe optional UUT test marker can be installed onany Pilot4D system, for visual test traceability andsubsequent identification purposes.

THERMAL SCANThe thermal Scan module verifies the operating temperatures of thecircuits and components on the UUT, comparing them to thetemperature profile acquired on a powered on sample board. Likeall of the other test techniques available in VIVA, thermal scan testsare fully integrated into the complete test program for the specificboard.

SPECIAL TEST SEQUENCES AND OBPVIVA software can call , during test program execution, functional test sequences written using third party languages: forexample Labview, VBScript, Python, and C, allowing the usermaximum test flexibility. The Pilot4D systems also offer fullyintegrated On board Programming solutions, applied to the UUTvia the mobile system probes.

TRACEABILITYThe Pilot4D systems include a series of hardware and softwarefeatures and performances to support full traceability of the testresults of each single UUT: the cameras automatically read 2Dbarcodes allowing test results to be stored for each board, makingthem available for subsequent repair operations, statisticalanalysis, etc., whether locally, via the resident repair stationmodule, or to external information systems.

AOI AND RGB LIGHTINGThe Pilot4D systems integratenew, improved RGB lighting:the advanced filters and colorprogramming options allow theuser to achieve the bestconditions for automatic opticalverification of component andsolder presence.

NET-ORIENTED TEST: FNODE-PWMONThe net-oriented test techniquesincluded in the Pilot4Dsystemssignificantly reduce the number ofmeasurements required for in-circuit test, therefore test time, without sacrificing fault coverage. FNode: stimulates and comparesthe analog behavior of the nets onthe UUT to those on a goldensample board.PWmon: stimulates and comparesthe behavior of the board nets inthe power on condition withrespect to a golden sample board. This test technique is applicable toboth analog and digital nets.

VECTORLESS TECHNIQUESThere are two vectorless testtechniques available on thePilot4D systems used to check forprocess faults on ICs (typicallyshorts and unsoldered pins), fullyintegrated and combinable inthe test program:Autic: based on clamp diodemeasurementsOpenfix: performed via acapacitive sensor whichmeasures the response of all ofthe pins of the IC under test.

QUICK TESTThis simple and intuitivesoftware interface enablesthe user to createcustomized functional testsby simply clicking on thevarious system resourcesdisplayed to connect themto the UUT.

FLYSCANThis option brings a fully integratedsolution for flying probe boundaryscan testing. The boundary scan testsare generated automatically alongwith the other electrical tests by theVIVA software, and are executed aspart of the complete test program. Asingle test report includes theboundary scan results, and in thecase of faults, further tests are carriedout via the flying probes to providecomponent-level diagnosticinformation, usable in the VIVARepair Station environment. The“extended test“ feature also enablesthe jtag-type test of non jtag nets, eliminating the need to createmanual cluster tests reducingprogramming time and increasingfault coverage.
