Multi-Unit Recycling Train• A multi‐unit recycling train is made up of a asphalt milling machine which pulls the recycler that is equipped with a vibratory screen, crusher and pugmill

• The material is sized, weighed and blended with emulsion along with additives such as lime or cement to meet mix design specifications 

• The multi‐unit train can be used on long straight roads,  along with mountain passes such Lake City, Colorado (Hwy 149, const. 2016), Mt Evans (Hwy 103, const. 2014)

• The typical depth of recycling for this method is 2” – 5” inches

Single-Unit Recycling Train• A single unit recycling train is very friendly and adaptive for city applications due to its size 

• Just like the full train, with the single unit the material is  blended with emulsion, along with additives such as lime or cement that are anti‐stripping agents, also helps with curing and builds added strength 

• The single unit recycler is more economical for smaller jobs due to reduced mobilization costs

• Good option for roadways that won’t facilitate the multi‐unit train

• The typical depth of recycling for this method is 2” – 5” inches

Cost Saving Considerations• With 100% of the material in the roadway being recycled it eliminates trucks to haul millings away and bring new asphalt back to the project

• Aggregate mining equipment fuel consumption is reduced significantly

• Similar to what you would have on a mill and fill operation minusthe construction truck traffic which is significantly reduced

• Traffic can usually be turned back on the roadway within a few hours after the process is complete, or at the end of the day

• Materials for CIR (like any other rehabilitation technique) should be considered for the given environmental conditions such as rain, snow, or freeze thaw climate.

• CIR has to be topped with some type of surface treatment

Cold Central Plant Recycling

• Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR) is a process where the asphalt recycling occurs in a central location

• Asphalt emulsion is added, and the CCPR mix can be used immediately for paving or stockpiled for later use for maintenance blade patching or pot hole repair

• CCPR is set up in a central location where several possible projects or applications could take place

• RAP (reclaimed asphalt pavement) is a valuable asset  that can be given new life and then used to pave roads and parking lots using conventional paving equipment

• This process is used when the job requires a deeper section of asphalt to be recycled, you have access to asphalt millings or are in areas that are inaccessible to the multi‐unit train

The Recycled Asphalt Solution Stockpiled RAP is:

Sized Mixed with emulsion Hauled to jobsite for immediate laydown or stockpiled for later use

Placed by paver or  blade Compacted Covered with surface treatment Typically after 2‐7 days Fog seal, chip seal, overlay, etc.
