There are always words for loss. Always ways to say sorry for

the sellout. No sense of irony in the marketing of purity. Boring is

so insipid. The things that inspire me have no sense of industry -

no shoguns of the slogan declaring cool. We are in it for the

    profit, not the money.

The R.L.M. Adventure Tour covers four nights and two days of

riding through and across the mountains valleys and gaps of Ver-

monts Green Mountains. The tour begins June nineteenth at sun-

down at the Mad River Motor Company in Granville, VT. This will

be home base for the duration. Set up camp and leave it. We ride

the twentieth and twenty first and depart after breakfast the morn-

ing of the twenty second. Meals, Beverages, and Gas are your

concern. Food will be available all weekend through Truck of theDead catering. Details on the cost will be forth coming. The Gran-

ville General Store is 1.2 miles north of the MRMC and open eve-

nings until 10pm. Camping is provided free of charge though

please note, this is private property provided to you gratis.

Treat our home with the respect it deserves.

Because in the end, you wont remem-ber the time you spent working in theoffice or mowing your lawn. Climb

    that goddamn mountain.

    DAY TWO: JUNE 20TH

The journey south begins at the Bethel Mountain Rd. The Rochester

Gap - which the Mountain Rd. passes through - offers stunning pano-

ramic views of Vermonts Green Mountain majesty. From there, we

follow the Connecticut River down Vt Rt 14 and 12. The turn onto

131 in Ascutney takes us West across the state. We return to Route

100 south in Ludlow and follow it to Londonderry where we meet Vt.

Route 11w. 11 becomes 30 east of Manchester. Route 30 up the

western edge of the state is the highlight of the Adventure Tours first

day. The Stone Valley Byway - from Manchester to Middlebury - with

its idyllic pastures, its mountain lakes and classical village centers,

    is quintessential New England

The final leg - from Middlebury to Granville across Vt. Rt. 125 and

the Middlebury Gap - is the most technical of the day. Only 17 miles

up and over the Green Mountains spine, it never the less offers the

opportunity at a wide variety of riding. From the loping straight

aways of the Breadloaf campus to the tight radius turns of the Ripton

rapids, Route 125 is the right kind of end to a spectacular first day of

    riding.

On the second day of riding, The Adventure

Tour turns toward familiar, though not less daunt-

ing, ground. The final leg across the Appala-

chian Gap will be the most technical of the

weekend so make sure to be careful and ride

    your own ride.

Heading north up Vt. Route 100, we begin the

day in the Granville Gulf. Sixteen miles of single

lane switch backs that follow the Mad River

north, the Gulf offers spirited riding terrain when

    the pavement allows.

North of Waitsfield, we stay on 100 towardStowe. Classical Vermont is around every cor-

ner here. From the Ben & Jerrys factory to the

breweries of Heady Topper and Lawsons Fin-

est, the epicurean delights the Green Mountains

have to offer will be secondary to the miles of

undulant bends this section of 100 serves.

In Stowe, we turn from 100n to Route 108n. The route through Smug-

glers Notch is decidedly different. Please be prepared for blind hair-

pin turns, single lane roads and large rock impediments. It is best to

have a keen awareness of the riders around you while passing

    through the Notch

Route 108n leads to VT15w which we follow into Jericho. In Jericho,

we bushwack a bit, cutting around Burlingtons traffic to Route 116

toward Bristol. A stop at Bristol Falls off the Lincoln Rd. is a weather

related detour. If the sun shines, we stop here and swim before our

way back across the Ap Gap.

Sometimes the evenings joys bite harder than is expected

and the scream-barfs stay straight through to morning. Some-

times, there are no old medicine man remedies to cure what ails.

For those of you suffering a bout of Adventure Tour Flu, these

routes offer a condensed riding distance with obvious intersec-

tions with the main pack marked. The riding is neither as challeng-

ing nor scenic. The time the pack will take to intersect is a crap

shoot though estimations are included. These, of course, do not

include timing for the main packs gas stops
