siNGAPORE-sUZhOUEXChANGE PROGRAMME

This year marked the 6 th Singapore-Suzhou Exchange

Programme or Riverside Secondary School and NanHuan Middle School. A group o students, led by Vice-Principal and 2 teachers, visited our sister school rom5 June to 11 June 2010. The sta and students o NanHuan Middle School extended their warm welcome byinviting us to join their school activities, which involvedlessons observations and a basketball riendly match. The Chinese culture was integrated seamlessly intotheir Art, Geography and Chinese lessons during ourlesson observations with our buddies.

The various cultural visits (Tiger Hill in Suzhou, WestLake in Hangzhou) were an eye-opener to us, as itwidened our horizons, enriched our knowledge and

ostered riendship with our buddies. We look orwardto return the hosting o our Suzhou riends in Augustthis year!

From 1 to 8 June 2010, RiversideSecondary embarked on theJapan Exchange Programme with22 students together with ourPrincipal, Mrs Sng Siew Hong, MdmDoris Soh (Team Leader), Miss LimGuihao and Mr Tsung Kkok Cheng. The programme was organisedin collaboration with the MiyazakiSingapore Friendship Exchange Council(MISFEC). The objective o this programmewas to deepen our understanding o theJapanese culture.

Due to un oreseen circumstances, we hadto reschedule our plan to visit Fukuodainstead o Miyazaki. The home stay was

abandoned but we had the opportunity tovisit Asokita Junior High School in FukuodaPre ecture. The visit was an eye-openerto the students and teachers as we sawcharacter building and teamwork in action.Students took turns to carry and distributethe school lunch, which consisted mainlyo rice, vegetables with meat, miso soupand milk, to their classmates. They alsohad to clean their classrooms a ter lunch.

The highlight o the trip would de nitelybe the experience o putting on a kimonoand serving tea in the traditional Japaneseway. The time-consuming process oputting on the kimono and the astidious

astening o every piece o paraphernaliawere all worth it when we noticed a totaltrans ormation o our appearance!

Another enlightening experiencewe had was in the di erent types oaccommodation we were in. We rststayed in a hostel, then in the city municipalcentre and nally in a hotel where toiletbowls came with exceptional cleaning

eatures.

The trip would not be complete withoutthe excursions to places o educationalinterest. While Mt Aso o ered us our rstdirect contact with a real volcano, Beppuexcited us with a volcanic landscape o

geysers, hot mud pools and hot springs. At Fugenndake, we witnessed thedevastation caused by the eruption o MtAso – remnants o houses and a primary

school destroyed by lava. We experiencedthe simulative e ects o an earthquakeand a typhoon at the Fukuoda CityDisaster Prevention Centre.

The eight-day trip to Fukuoda, Japan,

was indeed an enriching experience orall us. Such experiences could never beexpunged rom our memories.

NEW ZEALAND tRiP

Rubbing noses between 2 humans? This was the welcome that 22 students and 3 teachers received or their rst time in their livesduring their New Zealand school exchange programme rom 10 to 17 June 2010. That was also a happy reunion between Riversideand the 2 New Zealand schools - Waikowhai and Auckland Normal Intermediate since the last trip in 2008. It was as i old riends hadmet again as we continued the riendship orged 2 years ago. Students not only visited and tasted li e in New Zealand’sschools, but they were also given home stays with their buddies. They were touched bytheir host amilies’ hospitality and love or them. Most Riversidians were in tears when

it was time to part with their host amilies. Students also enjoyed themselves in Roturaby experiencing the rich culture o the Maori people and the picturesque scenery othe land. They even had the chance to milk lambs and take thrilling luge rides. We arereally looking orward to host or our New Zealand riends in October 2010.

Primary school pre ects arrived at Riverside Secondary School or the Primary SchoolPre ect Training @ Riverside on the morning o 4 June 2010. This is a meaning ulplat orm or Riverside student leaders to connect and servetheir community. Dedication, creativity, and the learn-and-serve spirit o Riverside student leaders are demonstrated asthey planned, organised and conducted the training sessionby themselves.

The programme started with ice-breakers as the students romvarious primary schools interacted with their group leaders.Through various games, movies and presentations, primaryschool students were equipped with interaction skills and critical thinking skills which could be applied in their schools and in theirlives. The event ended with a prize presentation and refections. It was indeed a memorable and valuable learning experience or all.

This year’s Student Leaders’ Investiture also heralded the rst Student Leaders’ OutreachWeek (12 to 16 July 2010). Newly-appointed and existing student leaders approachedteachers, school’s sta and students to o er a service or a helping hand. They practisedthe true spirit o servant leadership and demonstrated that humility is a key aspect ogood leadership. They also served as role models or other students in showing that it isimportant as a leader to be proactive in helping people.

A butterfy is chosen to be an iconic representation o Riverside student leaders. Acaterpillar that is encapsulated in a cocoon undergoes metamorphosis and would eventually emerge as a beauti ul butterfycloaked in glorious colours, soaring in the brilliant sun. Similarly, the 4 to 5 years where Riversidians are developed as leaders, isa process o metamorphosis. In time to come, hope ully all the student leaders will soar to greater heights in their achievement, surmount li e challenges and demonstrate perseverance, oresight and courage to lead and be led.

hUMANitiEs CAMP

It took my two teammates and I, nearly 2 months to complete thisPCF project. A ter our project was chosen on 11 February 2010, weexplained to our class about the project and the need to be creativein the ways we engaged the students. At rst, my class was notvery sure o what had to be done and that worried me.

When we rst visited the PCF centre (Block 853), my class wasexcited to see and interact with the little kids. On our rst visit, wehad ice-breakers by playing some games.

It was amusing to see my dearest classmates having troublecommunicating with the children, and they tried many ways talkingto them! My classmates really bonded together and they enjoyedthemselves even though the children were rather mischievous. Allo us were looking orward or more visits.

On subsequent visits, we started brainstorming on innovative ideasin teaching the children to per orm or a per ormance on 29 April2010 in ront o VIPs. My class worked very hard and we realisedthat it was not easy trying to control the children. Some o theproblems included children not being able to sit still. Thank ully, the teachers at PCF guided us.

During the per ormance at Woodlands Community Club, we were

so excited and my class quickly helped to put on costumes and setup props or the kids. I could not wait to see my classmates and thekids per orming. I took many photos o them and I am glad thatthe per ormance was a success ul one. Overall, all o us enjoyedourselves and we will de nitely miss the kids.

It is a wonder ul experience and I like to thank my classmates orbeing committed and working together as a class.
