Newaygo Area Chamber of Commerce announcesexpansion of operations

The Newaygo Area Chamber of Commerce is pleasedto announce the expansion of the Chamber staff to bet-ter serve its Membership and the community. Over thepast 18 months, at the request of the Board of Directors,Terrie Ortwein served as the Chamber’s Executive Direc-tor. During that time, she is widely credited for improvingthe Chamber’s operations and fscal status, growing the

membership, and rebuilding the brand and image of theChamber. “I’m pleased to report that we have made excel-lent progress in all of those areas” stated Scott Faulkner,Chairman of the Chamber. “Terrie’s tireless efforts overalmost two years could not have been more signifcantor fruitful. She single-handedly put this Chamber back on the map and headed toward a brighter future for ourMembers and our community.

The growth of the Chamber has resulted in an impor-tant staff expansion, to include the addition of Newaygonative Don Henning, whose grandfather’s name is memo-rialized in Henning Park, as the new Executive Director, moving Terrie Ortwein to the newly created position of Deputy Director. An enthusiastic businesswoman in herown right, Ortwein was quick to add, “These have been re-warding times for me personally and for the community, and I look forward to continuing these efforts. LANSING - Michigan Department of Agriculture (MDA)Director Don Koivisto today announced the establishmentof a new plant pest quarantine against the Chestnut GallWasp to protect the state’s growing chestnut industry fromthe devastating effects of an exotic insect pest found else-where in the U.S. Effective immediately, shipments of chestnut nursery stock coming from infested states is pro-

hibited unless certain regulatory requirements are met.“Michigan’s growing chestnut industry is at risk. Werank number one in the country for number of chestnutfarms; 54 farms encompassing 813 acres. Not to mention, chestnuts are among the many different specialty cropsgrown in Michigan,” said Koivisto. “We want to preventthe introduction of chestnut gall wasp into our state to en-sure the continued health and viability of chestnut grovesacross Michigan.”

MDA’s exterior state quarantine places restrictionson the movement of chestnut nursery stock from the fol-lowing quarantined states - Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.

The chestnut gall wasp is a tiny insect that can causechestnut trees to produce less nuts and often causes thetree to die. These wasps damage both the Asiatic and Eu-ropean chestnut which are grown commercially for food

and the remaining American chestnut, which were largely destroyed due to chestnut blight. The gall wasp does notaffect horse chestnut, which is not a true chestnut.

“Our ability to regulate the movement of chestnut nurs-ery stock is crucial to preventing the artifcial introductionand spread of chestnut gall wasp into the state,” said Koivis-to. “It’s going to take a team effort from chestnut growersand homeowners to ensure chestnut nursery stock meets

are footprints on the moon,” is the Class of 2010’s motto. The commencement exerciseswere held at the high school on May 27. Theweather was beautiful, but hot and humidleaving the gymnasium uncomfortable forthe attendees. The 163 graduates marched from the stageto their seats to the Pomp and Circumstanceprocessional. Principal Mark Simonswelcomed the crowd, and Superintendent  James Scholten gave the opening remarks. The senior band members played one lastsong with the underclassmen.

Alaina Swaney delivered the salutatoryaddress. She thanked her Heavenly Father,

her parents, and her classmates for theimpact they have had on her life. Elena Smithgave the valedictory address. She welcomed junior Doug Reed to play the piano while shetook her classmates on a reminiscent walk

through their school years.Teacher Maureen Baker was the commencement speaker, giving the

seniors one last assignment before they graduated. Under each seat wasa pad of paper and a pen. She told the students to write today’s dateon the first page and amemory they want toremember of this specialday. She then had thestudents turn to the fifthpage of the notepad andrecord what their bestday will be five yearsfrom now. She had thestudents do this again onpage 10, 25, and on thelast page, number 50.She challenged the students to set goals and to keep working to havetheir best day.

June will be saying goodbye to Sand Lake Elementary after 34 years.

She taught first through fourth grade and said, “One of the highlightshas been seeing the ‘lightbulbs’ go on as new concepts and skills wereunderstood. I have really enjoyed capturing the hearts of all thesewonderful youngsters as they have captured mine.”

When asked what has changed in the students over the years, Junereplied, “The students haven’t changed nearly as much as the parents. There are so many single-parent households and it has become sohard to make a living that there isn’t as much time to spend with thechildren.”

Her advice to new teachers: “If you find you don’t LOVE this careerplease quit and let someone who does, take over for you. The years flyby so treasure each one and save all those class pictures.”

There are some things June won’t miss when she retires, “I willnot miss the alarm going off when I’ve been up reading way too late.

I won’t miss the drive on

those days that shouldhave been snow days.“I will miss the

smiles and hugs from allthe students. I will missseeing the growth thechildren make in all theirsubjects each year. I willespecially miss all thegreat people that I havehad the honor to knowand work with here atTri County Schools,”said June who plans totravel when she retires.“I would like to find away to teach teachersall the little tricks I havelearned after 34 years inthis profession. I want tovolunteer to read someof my favorite books tothe children in the areahospitals.”

Donna is retiring from her teaching position after 31 and a half years. She spent most of these years in the home economics departmentteaching foods and nutrition, child development, interior design, andpersonal living and heath. Donna also taught world history, worldgeography, and civics.

“I will definitely miss the high schoolstaff. They are a great group of people — verysupportive and fun to be around. I will alsomiss the students,” said Donna, who won’tmiss getting up early and all the paperworkteachers are required to do. “We spend somuch time writing things up for the statewhen the time could be better spent doingthings to benefit our students.”

Donna isn’t sure of her retirement plansbut says she has a hard time sitting still andstaying home. She looks forward to havingmore time with her four grandchildren and isconsidering getting a part-time job or doingsome volunteer work.

Jodi looks forward to gettinginvolved in her church withmissions trips, seeing friends, visiting her daughter’sclassroom, traveling with herhusband, and staying up lateSunday nights.“I will miss seeing the

children everyday, the parents that I have gotten to know, and thestaff.”

Mark Simons, principal at the high school, will be leaving to takea job as superintendent of Mesick Consolidated Schools. “It has beengreat working with the board of education, administrative team, allstaff members, community members, parents, and especially thestudents,” said Mark, who has been at Tri County for twelve years, three at assistant principal and nine as principal.

The TC Warriors Bible study group at the middle school held afundraiser from April 12-23 to earn money for Haiti. The students in thegroup created their own commercial that was aired at school to informthe students of the desperate needs in Haiti. They also composed lettersthat were sent out to select local businesses. The group nicknamed thefundraiser “Change for a Change in Haiti.” Each homeroom class wasgiven a bucket to collect any change the students were able to give.

The class that collected the most change was to receive a treat but theydeclined and askedthat the money forthe treat be givento Haiti instead. The goal was toraise $300 andwith the help of the community ourschool was ableto raise $358.18.Thank you toeveryone thathelped to makea change in Haiti.

Most of us know that regular mainte-nance is key to a well-running vehicle.

That’s why we get our oil changed,

have our tires rotated and so forth.

Another important part of the regular

maintenance schedule is the tune-up.

Because the internal workings of ve-

hicles have changed so much over the

years, the definition of a tune-up may

vary from the simple replacement of

spark plugs to the complete overhaul

of several areas within the vehicle.

Most experts agree that the best tune-

ups involve an inspection of several

areas, including the battery, enginemechanical, powertrain control, fuel,

ignition and emissions. Not every shop

defines a tune-up in this way, however.

Generally, the more involved the tune-

up, the more it costs.

When scheduling a tune-up, it is im-

portant that you find out what it will

entail and how much it will cost. Be

wary of really low estimates; chances

are the shop is pushing for your busi-

ness and the final bill for the tune-up

will be much higher.

The best shops understand that not alldrivers know what a tune-up is and

request one on the assumption that it

will fix whatever is wrong with their

vehicle. They will ask why you think

your vehicle needs a tune-up and go

from there. You may discover that what

you really need are new battery cables

rather than new spark plugs.

Once you have several estimates, sit

down and compare them. Select the

shop whose estimate includes a fairly

thorough inspection at a fair price. You

want to make sure that when you drive

away from the shop your vehicle isrunning smoothly and efficiently.

The term “tune-up” means different

things to different people. Keep that in

mind as you shop around for estimates.

Know what you are getting before you

take your vehicle in, and if you are get-

ting a tune-up for any reason other than

maintenance issues, relay that infor-

mation to the shop. If you don’t, you

could end up paying for a tune-up plus

a repair.

Automotive Guide How Old Is That New Tire?By Ralph Lee

When you shop for bananas, you buy the bruised,

rotting ones, right? Of course, you don’t. You go

for the fresh ones unless you’re making banana

bread. When you shop for tires, you just might

be buying ones that are the equivalent of bruised,

rotting bananas. Unfortunately, unlike bananas,

the tires may be bruised and rotting where you

can’t see such damage. That’s because these

seemingly new tires aren’t new at all. Here’s how

you can tell how old that “new” tire really is.

Imprinted on all tires are a series of digits and

letters called a Tire Identification Number (or the

tire’s serial number). It’s these symbols that tell

you where the tire was made, how big it is and

when it was made-specifically identifying the

week and the year of the tire’s manufacturing.

Depending upon whether the tire was manufac-tured since the year 2000 or before, there are two

sets of digits and letters. For those manufactured

in 2000 or later, the first three symbols will be

the letters “DOT” in all instances. The remain-

ing symbols will be a combination of letters and

numbers. The entire series will look similar to

this: DOT K6RY TBFM 4408. It’s the last four

numbers that you want to focus on. The week and

the year of the tire’s manufacture can be found in

these four numbers. The first two digits indicate

the week of assembly and the last two identify

the year. If you see “4408” as the last four digits,

that tire was made in the 44th week of the year

2008. If the last four digits are “1609,” the tire

was made in the 16th week of 2009.

For tires manufactured before 2000, you’ll again

have “DOT” and then a series of letters and num-

bers like this: DOT TB1C MJT 359. This time,

it’s the last three numbers that you want to check.

Again, the first two digits of the last three indi-

cate the week of assembly while the last number

shows the year. If you see “359” at the end, the

tire was made in the 35th week in 1999.

Armed with that information, what do you do?

Well, you head out to your vehicle (or vehicles)

and check the ages of all your tires. If you’ve got

one that’s six years old or older, it’s time to get a

new one-even if it has low miles. As tires age, a

degradation process takes place. Tire tread sepa-

ration can result-the tread comes away from the

tire in an instant-and an accident can occur even

if the tire has low miles on it.

Of course, age isn’t the only consideration whenthinking about your tires. Factors such as wear,

maintenance, storage and weather are also im-

portant to take note of.

The good thing about older tires-as opposed to

old fruit-is that you can return them for a refund

up to a point. If you’ve got a tire that’s six years

old, you’ve got, to keep up with the fruit analogy,

a lemon. If you bought it six years ago, you’re

out of luck and need to buy a replacement right

away. However, if you’ve got tires considerably

older than the date you bought them on, you may

be in luck. Take your receipt to the place you

bought the tire from and see what they can do.

Depending upon the tire’s wear and the age dis-

crepancy, you may get anywhere from a partial

to a full discount on its replacement.

Please enjoy our monthly excerpts from the compilations of Elon Howe who has walked this story. He would like to thank

Cameron Knutson, his walking partner, the Newaygo County Society of History, Norm Ochs, County Surveyor & Leon

Staples, computer expert, & Londa Howe for typing everything up.

JOHN SNOW’S “TOWN”Today one will find only memories of Snowtown. What might be left of this sight may be found south of

Hardy Dam, one and a half miles down Cypress to 48th then to 52nd to 56th Streets then east and west.

The early people that put the boom town there were first: John Stearns from Croton on the Hudson, New

York; second: Christopher Culp and then John F. Snow – in this order.

Stearns came to the Croton area, then called the Fork, around 1836. Culp arrived sometime in 1854;John Snow around 1857. Stearns’s earlier work may be found on the very first county survey of Croton

Township.

TREE SERVICE

EvolutionMany times when we hear that word we put our guard up because we think of Charles Darwin with his

theories. But evolution simply means change. And that is something we all must do.

When we are born, we are basically animals and our whole purpose is to survive, both personally and asa species. We have animalistic survival instincts that are programmed into our DNA. So we compete and fightto insure that we get what we need.

As we grow up, at some point, we begin to emerge into a more humanistic state, as we begin to use themorals and values that we learned from parents, teachers, churches and society in general. Most of us getto a place where we know that we and the species will survive. At that point we can begin to focus on thehuman characteristics of love, compassion, co-operation, and the good of all concerned.

The next phase of change is an awareness of the spiritual part of us. Somewhere between childhood anddeath, most people become aware of a divine, higher power that is within us. We reach that point in many

ways. For some, it is part of our religious training as children. For others, it may be a near death experience.Maybe, it is the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Perhaps, the diagnosis of a terminal illness bringsus to spiritual awareness.

In the animal and human states we are often not aware of this divine part of us andif we are, we feel that this higher power is outside of us. But, as we evolve and growin our spiritual awareness, we realize that the divine power is within us. It is this vital

force that actually powers up the system. Sure, the organs and tissues all play their role, but without this divine spark we could not exist.

In holistic medicine, we pay attention to this spiritual part because it has sucha huge impact on the physical and mental. In homeopathy, we believe that thisspiritual, vital energy is what produces the symptoms that guide us to the correctremedy to bring the complete being (body, mind, and spirit) back into alignment.

So, realize, we are evolving beings, from animal to human to spirit and our physical, mental, and spiritual health are inseparable.

Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
