Milan girls head coach Bob Bressert returns for his sixth season at the helm of the Lady Indians varsity program. Last year, Coach Bressert led his team to their best record since 2002-03, capped by a first-round sectional win and close try in the semifinals. The Lady Indians graduated starting guards Nicole Tuttle and Coutney Bruns, as well as forward Savannah Sargent. However, their leading scorer and rebounder for the last two seasons, Cici Bailey, returns for her senior season. Bailey, the 6’ forward, has the speed, strength, and ability to command the game, provided the Lady Indians work their offensive sets and take care of the ball. Although they are off to a slow start this year at 1-3, the gold and black team shows potential. Guards Makayla O’Brien, Angela King and Kacey pindell can all hit the three-point shot, while Bailey and Lauren Roell can work in the paint. Don’t sleep on this Lady Indians team or be surprised to see them build up another winning record this season.

Milan boys head coach Randy Combs returns for his second season at the helm following a 14-year tenure at the same position a decade ago. In his return last year, Coach Combs led the Indians to their best record since 2013-14 and placed runners up in the Ripley County Tournament, the ORVC, and the IHSAA Class 2A Sectional 45. Last year, the Indians were known for their breakneck speed and long-range shooting ability, capped by a strong inside presence from Ripley publishing Company’s Wm. “Tiny” Hunt Award winner Orrin Schmidt. Although Schmidt graduated along with two hot shoot-ers Joel Norman and Damon Ward, the gold and black are bringing back several key players to their roster. This year, opponents will still need to match the speed of junior peyton Wert and senior Matt Riehle at guard. Forwards Adam Norman (junior), Carsyn Ascherman (junior), and Carter Wade (senior) will surely bring back their physical style of play. pure shooter Kaleb Rinear also returns for his senior year. There’s no shortage of talent on this year’s Indians squad. As long as they can remain mentally sharp and control the game between their ears, they should be prime for another winning season.
Indians at a glance...
The Jac-Cen-Del eagles (pages 6-7) welcome former assistant Jack Day to their head coaching position this season. The eagles have been consistently improving over the last three seasons, and this year they welcome back several key players. Forward Brandon Baber showed great potential in the paint last year and will hopefully show off continued improvement for his senior season. Shooters Justin Ohlmansiek (senior), Will Neal (junior), and TJ Menchhofer (junior) are all back this year as is guard Wyatt Day (soph.), who is just as comfortable tossing up the long ball as he is driving the lane for two. With the eagles’ ability to rain down three pointers and Baber inside crashing the boards, the eagles will likely be a tough outfit to handle this season.

Head Coach Aaron Garrett returns for his 12th year at the helm of the Bulldogs (pages 8-9), where he has racked up a stellar career record of 171-88. Batesville has had three consecutive winning seasons and were Ripley County Tournament champions last year (for the 11th time in 12 years). The blue and white squad have a little re-working to do in their lineup, as the program graduated four seniors including leading scorer and rebounder Robert Raver. With more tal-ent moving up, however, expect the Bulldogs to be strong contenders again this year.
Bulldogs at a glance...
Head Coach Bryan Helvie assumes the reins for Batesville’s girls varsity team (pages 8-9) for his first season. The team is currently 2-5 to begin 2019-20. The Lady Bulldogs graduated five seniors last year, including leading scorer and rebounder Hattie Westerfeld, who aver-aged a double-double throughout the season. This year’s senior leaders, Abigail Westerfeld, Macy prickel, and Carlie Werner will look to fill the gap and bring their team back to winning ways as their season marches on.

South Ripley head coach Tyler Theising enters into the second season of his young coaching career at the helm of the Raiders. Injuries beleaguered the Raiders last season, but they are certainly not short on talent coming into this year. Returning at guard is the fast-as-lightning Zach Gentile (soph.) and the smooth-shooting Cody Samples (junior). Forwards Bryce Franklin (junior), eric Vickers (senior), and Cory Ralston (senior) will look to add points inside and con-trol the boards. The Raiders are listed as one of the taller teams in the county this year. In last year’s sectional semifinals, Coach Theising proved he can play chess with the best of them, as his team nearly toppled the favorite and eventual champi-ons Southwestern with a surprisingly effective ball control strategy. If the green and white squad can put all the pieces together this season, don’t be surprised to see them flip last year’s record into a winning one.

South Ripley’s Lady Raiders enter this season as three-peat Class 2A Sectional 45 champi-ons, although the squad looks different than in year’s past. Head coach Matt McNew assumes the reins for his first season. The team graduated three starters and two reserves last year, including 1,000+ career point scorer elexah Roepke. This year’s team, much younger, still boasts sen-ior leadership in forwards Lindsey Meyer and Cierra Copeland. Both ladies have shown their ability to score and rebound, with Meyer averaging about 10 points per game and Copeland seven points per game so far. Junior LJ McQueen is stepping into a starting guard role alongside sophomore Alexa Heidt, and sophomore Rachel Meyer is averaging about seven points per game in her forward role. Although SR may experience some “growing pains” this season, they should be fun to watch as they develop their teamwork and confidence on the court.

Good Luckeagles!
Jac-Cen-Del’s Lady eagles have become a dynasty under head coach Scott Smith, returning for his 19th season. The soaring Lady eagles won their 11th straight sectional cham-pionship last year as well as their fifth Ripley County Tour-nament championship in seven seasons. At 4-1 so far this year, it doesn’t look like the blue and red squad plans to let up in the near future. JCD graduated star guard and 1,000+ point scorer Mari-ah Day, but bring back a talented team. Returning forward paige Ledford (Jr.) averaged a double-double in points and rebounds last year. paired with forwards Regan Carroll (Sr.) and Anna Hubbard (Jr.), the Lady eagles have the potential to dominate down low should they put their size and strength to work. Returning guards Annabelle Williams (So.) and Kadee Kuhn (Jr.) have both shown off-season growth thus far. Both ladies are adept ball handlers and a threat from beyond the three-point arc. Williams is equally as likely to drive the lane for two points as she is to shoot the long ball. Don’t jinx them, but the Lady eagles look primed for more championship-level success this year.
