You have been commissioned by the Northern Echo to produce a new magazine or newspaper product. Your product could be in any genre (lifestyle, music, travel and so on) but it must be self financed through sales or advertising. You must also produce your magazine for a specified audience segment within the 16 to 25 age group.

Meeting my clients needs and the limitations:

•My product can’t contain any extreme or vulgar language. •It also can’t include any extreme or vulgar imagery. •Selected and developed a product that will fill the gap in the market. •Completed a lot of in depth research into my chosen target audience and subjects of my articles. •The advertising will have to be local as The Northern Echo is a local newspaper.

Effects on content:

My target audience effects the content that will be included in my magazine, for example: • From my reader profile; 24 hours is spent every week online, per reader; therefore I have included an article called ‘Stalking band members’. This will be an entertainment article but involves using the internet. • They also like trying new things, from this and other research I’ve done into my target audience, like surveys and questionnaires, I’ve produced an article on guitar playing for beginners, I’ve received a lot of positive feedback from this as majority of my target audience are generally interested in this subject.

RIOT magazine GENRE RESEARCH They’re both very busy with sell lines but Kerrang uses a lot of imagery too

They use bright coloured text to make the sell lines and titles stand out

NME is a lot more basic and plain compared to Kerrang, but is still a good and eye grabbing look

RIOT magazine GENRE RESEARCH For my genre research I looked at Kerrang and NME magazine:

Almost every page in Kerrang have these information boxes.

Both magazines use similar imagery; mainly use of very passive imagery.

NME uses a lot more text, however it’s a smaller font than what’s used in Kerrang and they make sure there’s enough imagery to balance out the text.

Kerrang like to make their titles and kickers stand out more than NME do, so they normally take up about a quarter of the page.

The eyeline of the imagery in both magazines is always above the top third of the page.

From the overall sales of my magazine, not including the advertising, I will get a total of £15,750.00. •

OVERALL PROFIT: £20,630.29

Majority of my income will come from the sales of the magazine, however I will also get a lot from advertising too. My main expenditure will be the
