he cheeks are highly important when it comes to how young you look, largely because they’re

among the first features to show the ageing process. The good news is that very subtle changes can have a significant effect, giving you a more youthful appearance.

The cheek areas usually “drop” at the same time as they lose fat, according to cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr Alex Phoon, so you end up with a “descent and deflation” phenomenon. This causes jowls to become more apparent, eyes to appear hollow and the creases between the mouth and the cheeks to deepen.

One way to treat this is to inflate the cheeks, which should be done carefully using either dermal fillers or fat injections. “You need to make sure the clinician doesn’t over-inflate the cheek area, or else you can start to look like a chipmunk,” says Dr Phoon, who’s based in Sydney.

These treatments should only be undertaken on younger people, because a facelift would be preferable for an older person, says Dr Phoon. Just filling the cheeks can look unnatural when the eyes and mouth are also affected.

“A lot of my patients come in, place a finger over their cheeks, lift upwards and outwards and say they want me to ‘do this, but without performing a facelift’,” he says. What the patient is doing, though, is mimicking the effect of a facelift – it’s the only procedure that will totally lift the cheeks to where they used to be.

Fillers and facelifts both give better results than cheek implants, which have become less popular than they once were. Light-based therapies and dermal rolling can be effective for a younger person, and even for an older person these treatments can be performed before the surgical procedure to help give the best outcome.

It’s important to note that a person’s ethnicity and genetic predisposition will dictate the shape and size of their cheeks. “I’d never interfere with the ethnic aspect of a person’s facial features, as that looks

There’s a surprising secret to a youthful look – and it all starts with your cheeks.

unnatural and the face would lose all harmonious balance,” says Dr Phoon, who takes pride in the natural effect of his facial surgery, adding that his clients never look “operated on”.

“Years ago facelifts just removed skin, which really made the whole face look very tight and fake,” says Dr Phoon. “Today it’s all about reinstating the anatomy to where it used to be and then draping the skin, with very little removal.”

As well as running his own practice, Dr Phoon works closely with Sydney’s The Laser Lounge, where Paige Barrand and her team provide skincare and non-surgical treatment programs.

“The key to performing beautiful, natural rejuvenation is to offer a full spectrum of treatments, ranging from skincare and injectables right through to surgery,” Dr Phoon explains. “All of these components must be individualised to suit each person’s needs.”
