2. Special Teaching Assignments/Honors

Initiated and team-taught freshman Learning Community class, “Marketplace 2020.” The course was offered as a College of Consumer and Family Sciences multi-disciplinary collaboration in the fall of 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. At OSU, initiated an experimental, video-streamed graduate course, titled “The Roots of Family and Consumer Economics”, underwritten by the Committee on Inter-Institutional Cooperation. The archive of the course is at Face2Face.hec.ohio-state.edu. The course was offered jointly with Purdue University and the University of Alabama in the Spring and Autumn of 1999. At UNCG, main assignment was to help in the revision and resubmission of a program of studies for the Ph.D. in textile products marketing. The task was completed during the 1996-7 academic year, and the program was approved to begin in the Fall of 1997.

Consumer Sciences and Retailing Department Outstanding Teacher 1996 and 1993. Finalist in the Mary L. Matthews teaching award, School of Consumer and Family Sciences 1990-1993 and 1995-1996. In 1991, initiated a computer laboratory based course in consumer response and information systems. The course involved student operation of an information and complaint hotline for the School. The course simulated the operation of a consumer hotline in business. Incoming calls were logged using a software program called CRIS, which was donated by TARP Information Systems Inc. Rights to the program expired in 1993. Helped develop the Fight Back! Foundation's National Internship in Consumer Affairs. The program began in the Summer of 1990. Was responsible for developing the practicum in consumer affairs (CSR 382) for the Consumer Sciences and Retailing Department at Purdue. In January of 1985, initiated a Consumer Affairs Workshop, in which students prepared material for a column entitled Purdue Consumer. For two years the column appeared every second Sunday in the Lafayette Journal and Courier. In October of 1985, the University News Service began to release edited versions of the column for syndication within the State. Summaries of the column were occasionally presented on local television. Some 20 students received one hour of credit for working on the column. The column received a SOCAP award for consumer education in 1986.

Appointed to the Board of Trustees of The Foundation of the Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals in Business for a three year period, to commence January 1, 1990. Reappointed for a second term 1993-1996. The purpose of the Foundation was "...to serve the public interest through information, education and research, in support of an ethical market place and healthy economy”. Member of the Campaign “Advance America” Telecommunications Future, 1991-94. The CAATF is an informal group of business, consumer and public interest leaders who support the development of an advanced telecommunications network. Appointed to the Board of the Fight Back! Foundation for a two-year term commencing in 1991. The Fight Back! Foundation was founded by consumer activist David Horowitz, to carry out consumer education projects. The

Foundation is located in Burbank, California. Major role in the foundation was to conduct a nationwide internship program in consumer affairs. Became an Arbitrator for the National Futures Association, 1990. This involved periodically being assigned to specific cases involving disputes between commercial futures traders and their customers. Appointed Consumer Representative to the Ford Consumer Appeals Board in 1986, and attend the monthly meetings of the Indiana Regional Board. Chairperson of the Board, 1987-89. Board Member (1989-91) and Founder Member of Project START, an organization of consumer professionals who are concerned about automobile insurance. Initiated an on-going Consumer Advisory Panel for Pay Less Inc., a regional chain of grocery stores, Fall 1988. Appointed Treasurer of the Indiana Chapter of the Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals for the year 1988. Indiana representative to The Cost Coalition, a Consumer/Industry Coalition to Combat Sales Taxes (1986-91). Made a member of the Better Business Bureau's National Panel of Consumer Arbitrators in 1985. Active as an arbitrator in the Indiana region of the Better Business Bureau 1985-91.
