  • RHODES WOMEN’S CHORUS

Ding, Dong! Merrily On High Arr. by Rose Dunphey

(Branle De L’Officiel; 16th Century French Dance)

    Ding, Dong! Merrily on high,

in Heav’n the bells are ringing,

    Ding, dong! Verily the sky

    Is filled with angels singing.

    REFRAIN

    Gloria,

    hosanna in excelsis!

    Gloria,

    hosanna in excelsis!

    Even so here below,

    Let steeple bells be swinging,

    and “io, io, io,”

    by priest and people singing.

    (REFRAIN)

    Pray you dutifully, prime

    your morning chime, ye ringers;

    May you beautifully rhyme

    Your evening song, ye singers.

    (REFRAIN)

    Heidi Frazier, Brittany Hickman

    & Khan Ton, soloists

    Candlelight Carol John Rutter

    How do you capture

    The wind on the water?

How do you count all the stars in the sky?

    How can you measure

    The love of a mother,

Or how can you write down

    A baby's first cry?

    REFRAIN

    Candlelight, angel light,

    Firelight and star glow

Shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn.

    Gloria, Gloria in excelsis Deo!

    Angels are singing;

    The Christ child is born.

    Shepherds and wise men

    Will kneel and adore him,

    Seraphim round him their vigil will keep;

    Nations proclaim him

    Their Lord and their Saviour,

    But Mary will hold him

    And sing him to sleep.

    (REFRAIN)

Find him at Bethlehem laid in a manger:

Christ our Redeemer asleep in the hay.

Godhead incarnate and hope of salvation:

    A child with his mother

    That first Christmas Day.

L’o How a Rose E’er Blooming Arr. by Mark Hayes

Lo, how a Rose e'er blooming

    From tender stem hath sprung!

    Of Jesse's lineage coming

As men of old have sung

    It came a flow'ret bright

    Amid the cold of winter

When half spent was the night

    Isaiah 'twas foretold it

The rose I have in mind

    With Mary we behold it

    The Virgin Mother kind

    To show God's love aright

She bore to men a Savior

When half spent was the night

    This flow'r, whose fragrance tender

    With sweetness fills the air

    Dispels with glorious splendor

    The darkness ev'ry where

    True man yet very God

From sin and death he save's us

    And lightens ev'ry load

    Sages, searching for stars.

    Searching for Love in Heaven;

I Wonder as I Wander John Jacob Niles

I wonder as I wander out under the sky

How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die

    For poor on'ry people like you and like I;

I wonder as I wander out under the sky

When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall

With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all

But high from God's heaven, a star's light did fall

And the promise of ages it then did recall

If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing

A star in the sky or a bird on the wing

Or all of God's Angels in heaven to sing

He surely could have it, 'cause he was the

    King

Ruiseñor que en la selva cantando lloras,

Callad mientras la cuna se balancea.

Manojito de rosas y de alelíes,

Que es lo que estás soñando, que te sonríes?

    Cuáles son tus ensueños, dilo alma mia;

Mas que es lo que murmuras? Eucaristía.

Pajaritos y fuentes, auras y brisas,

Respetad ese sueño y esas sonrisas, callad

mientras la cuna se balancea; que el Niño está

    soñando, bendito sea!

Come, let’s sing a little lullaby, Come, let’s sing a

little, My Jesus is sleepy. Blessed be, blessed be.

Font of life ever flowing, bright clear and singing,

Nightingale of the forest, glad new is singing. Born in

a manger lowly, Christ child most holy.

    Bundle of roses and violets,

what are you dreaming of, that makes you smile?

    What are your dreams, tell me, o my soul;

But what are you whispering? Eucharist.

Little birds and fountains, zephyrs and breezes,

Take care of that dream and those smiles.

Hush while the cradle is rocking,

The Child is dreaming! May he be blessed!

A-Rovin’ on a Winter’s Night Traditional Appalachian Folk Song

    A-Rovin’ on a winter’s night,

And drinking that good ol’ wine

Dreaming about that dear little girl

Who stole this heart of mine

She is just like a budded rose

That bloomed in the month of June

She is just like an old instrument

    That’s just been lately tuned

Maybe I’ll take a trip to a foreign land

    Be it France, or Spain

But if I go ten thousand miles,

    I’ll be back ‘round again

I’ll love you ‘til the sea runs dry,

And the rocks all melt in the sun

I’ll love you ‘til the day I die,

Though you’ll never be my own

    A-Rovin’ on a winter’s night,

And drinking that good ol’ wine

Dreaming about that dear little girl

Who stole this heart of mine

    Gaudete Traditional English Carol

    Arr. by J. David Moore

Translation by Dr. Walter L. Moore, Jr.

    Gaudete, gaudete, Christus est natus

    Ex Maria virgine, gaudete.

Tempus adest gratiae hoc quod optabamus,

    Carmina laetitiae, devote redamus.

Deus homo factus est, natura mirante,

Mundus renovatus est, a Christo regnante.

    Ezekelis porta, clausa pertransitor,

Unde lux est orta, salus invenitor.

Ergo nostra contio, psallat jam in lustro,

    Benedicat Domino. Salus regi nostro.

    Rejoice! Rejoice! Christ is born

    of the Virgin Mary. Rejoice!

The time of grace that we desired is here.

Let us reverently render songs of joy.

While Nature wondered, God has been made human. The

world has been restored by Christ’s reigning.

The closed gate of Ezekiel is crossed.

Salvation is found in the place from which the light came.

So let our assembly now sing [psalms] in offering.

Let it bless the Lord. Hail to our king!

Snow Song (It’s Coming Down) GrooveLily

    from Striking 12

    Snowflakes fall like velvet

    From iron-colored skies

    Somehow I can’t help it

    I feel my spirits rise

    Streetlamps a glow

    Time to take it slow

    It’s coming down

    Crystal branches glisten

    Like diamonds over me

    Frozen in position

    A silent symphony

    Sidewalks white and clean

    Perfect and pristine

    It’s coming down

It’s coming down and all my blues disappear

And this old town is young again—roll back the years

Because the world looks like new

Or at least that’s the view from here...

It’s cold here by the river

But I don’t feel it much

    The moon’s a silver sliver

    Close enough to touch

    Storm clouds drift away

A star comes out to play

    And it’s coming down

Rhodes Singers originated in 1937 under the direction of Professor Louis Nicholas

(‘34), who organized the first choral ensemble at Rhodes College in 1934. Burnet

    C. Tuthill, co-founder of the National Association of the Schools of Music

(NSAM), formalized choral music performance with the establishment of

the Rhodes Singers as the concert choir for the college. Rhodes Singers is a select,

auditioned mixed choir of 44 Singers, and serves as a flagship ensemble for

Rhodes College. They perform a variety of mostly small-form choral works.

Rhodes Singers may be heard in many concerts locally, on tours throughout the

United States, and on international tours every few years. In 2010, they performed

in the Rome International Choral Festival, and performed concert tours in Italy and

France. They recently performed, by invitation, at the Kennedy Center in

Washington D.C. for the Presidents’ Day Choral Festival, and in concert, by

adjudicated invitation, at the National Cathedral. In recent years they have toured

Arkansas, Missouri, Georgia, Texas, and Louisiana. In 2017, the choir performed a

concert tour around the New York area that culminated in a standing ovation

presentation at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Rhodes Women’s Chorus was founded by Dr. Diane Clark and is currently under

the direction of Dr. Ellen Koziel. Under her leadership, the Chorus has participated

in the Fall Choral Showcase Concerts and the Homecoming Collage concerts at

Rhodes. The Chorus has also enjoyed collaborations with adult and children’s

choirs as well as local choral and instrumental ensembles. They recently performed

with the Rhodes MasterSingers Chorale and Memphis Symphony Orchestra in the

World Premiere of Robert G. Patterson’s Requiem. They have collaborated with

the choirs of Church of the Holy Communion to perform the Fauré Requiem in

November 2018 and Forrest’s Requiem for the Living in November 2017. The

Women’s Chorus has been privileged to participate in master classes with noted

American composers such as Stephen Paulus and Libby Larsen, and with

internationally acclaimed recording artists Anonymous 4.
