hat if you could see colorful tulips blooming brightly between the woods? What if you could watch

countless brides getting pictures taken beside the river? What if you could feel the warm light and heaven-like spring? Personally, I would be excited. That was why I went to visit Taiziwan Park. I sought to a beautiful and gracious spring there, but I also found something else surprising and extremely exciting.

Taiziwan Park was named after two princes in South-song dynasty, (taizi in Chinese means the prince who is going to succeed the crown, wan in Chinese means shore,) whose tombs had once been there. Taiziwan Park is also famous for its tulips and every year there is a tulip-festival.

In late March, the weather turns warm and many families go to the park for outings or to have a picnic and to see the tulips. In the park, there were so many tulips in many colors I had never seen before, yellow, orange, red, white, purple, pink, candy color and some others I could not even name. Their shape is like a premium cup and the petals are so delicate that I had to press

against my desire to touch them. There are also many other attractive kinds of flowers for you to appreciate in Taiziwan Park. The funniest one I think is the yellow flower which is named as the “Dutch Master”. Its shape is very strange, with a long but smaller flower stretching out above the bigger flower, looking like a trumpet. In fact, they are one flower.

One thing that was bad about going to this park at this time was that there were too many people, which troubled me when I was taking photos and made me difficult to pass through. On the green grass lawn, which is

W

near a stream, it became clear to me just how dense a population China has, because I saw many people everywhere. A middle-aged man with his hair a little grey wearing glasses, absorbed himself in playing guitar, which was of a wood color similar to mine, while a young girl was practicing yoga on the opposite lawn, which is isolated by a stream. I thought the girl was brave and somewhat funny to do yoga in public like this. A naughty impulse came to me that I wanted to go practice taiji beside her, which would certainly attract others’ attention. Of course, I didn’t do it because I thought it was silly. Many people sat on the grass and played cards. Some even tried to fly kites in such a crowded place. “Oh, how could it be,” I said in disbelief. The kites were of different shapes, most were like animals, such as swallow, bat, centipede, but I didn’t believe they could fly them successfully.

Considering the busy traffic, I decided to leave earlier than I planned. But when I was waiting for the bus in the station, I wanted to go to the toilet. So I surveyed around and noticed another park named Huagang Park. It’s also free, like Taiziwan Park. I went into it to find a toilet. However, a white peacock walking on the narrow road caught my eye. She walked like a queen

with her dress-like tail touching the ground. Oh, she was so elegant that I couldn’t help following her. I found some other peacocks. Some were blue and green. Some were white. One was white and blue. Extreme happiness visited me when the white peacocks spread their tails. Many people around the fence screamed when the white ones showed their tails and turned around like superstars, letting visitors take photos. It was amazing. They looked like young pretty brides who wear white beautiful bridal veils. Their tails were like great fans and when they were shaking their white tails under the bright sunshine, oh, my God, it was dreamy. They struck me so powerfully with their flawless perfection.

The tulips want you. The peacocks await you. The spring air invites you. So, come. Come to experience a thick-green vibrant spring! The beauty of Taiziwan and Huagang Park is free but invaluable for allof you.

Shan Xi

----By Annle (张卉)

han Xi is a province located in northern China. It is a Chinese typical

northern province, where you can see the endless Loess plateau and the

gully.

Like many other provinces in the

north, Shan Xi also has some environmental

problems, such as sand storms (especially in

the dry winter). Also the wind in winter is

strong and cold, and it snows there more

frequently than the south.

Every place has its specialties though,

as does Shan Xi. I think the most famous

things in Shan Xi are coal and aged vinegar.

Shan Xi is called the sea of coal. You can

see the coal mines everywhere. As for the

aged vinegar, I like it very much. When my

mother is cooking I often ask her to put in

more vinegar, thus the dishes will become

more delicious. But when I came here to the

south I found that the vinegar is totally

different from ours, and I had no choice but

to “give up” my vinegar.

My mother tells me that Shan Xi is the

province with the most kinds of noodles. For

example the fried noodles (炒面) are a kind

of noodles that a little thick and short. When

you finish cutting them then you put them

into the pan and fry with some vegetables in

it as you like. (Such as onions, cabbage)

There are also sliced noodles (刀削

面). When the dough is prepared, the cook

should stand a little distance with the boiler,

and then slice the dough into the boiler. The

noodles are cut is very thin and long. It’s a

kind of noodles with soup.

And I like a kind of noodle with beef

and meatballs (丸子) in it. The noodle in it

is long and tastes quite spicy; I like the kind

of hot feeling.

S

11.Spring/Summer 2011 ~

What’s more, Shan Xi is also a historical province.

It is said that the descendants of the Chinese Nation

are born in the Huang River Valley. Yao (尧), Shun(舜),

Yu(禹) are the early leaders of the nation, and Yao was

born in Shan Xi. Today, there still has the mausoleum of

Yao in Lin Fen city in order to commemorate him. The

ticket is not expensive and it’s a meaningful place. You can learn many historical

things there. It also has the highest gate in the world named “Hua Gate” (华门) 。I

have been there once with my classmates; we really enjoyed ourselves.

Another place I want to recommend you is The Ancient City of Ping Yao which

located in Ping Yao city. It’s an ancient town and

famous for its dwellings in Ming and Qing dynasty.

It has 2700 years of history and is the only ancient

town that declared world cultural heritage

successfully as a whole town in China. It has many

old lanes that show you the economy, politics,

culture and religion at that time. You can appreciate

the antique flavor there, taste traditional food and see characteristic performance.

What a wonderful thing! I haven’t gone there before, that’s a pity for me. I hope

someday I can visit there and then I can give you a more detailed introduction.

What I told you here is just a small part of Shan Xi, if you want to have a closer

contact with it, come and visit us. So many interesting things are waiting for you.

13.Spring/Summer 2011 ~

I recieved the letter in autumn.

I kept it in my pocket, quite carefully. I moved across the road, over the river, through the trees, and finally, arrived at the lake bank, which,in golden dusk shunshine, gave off graceful warmness. I sat down and began to read. I planned that, ever since the very moment I was handed the letter. The wind opened it for me

It said"I sent my best wishes to you just now, just as the wind blew." Immediately my eyes welled up with tears. I looked forward in the direction the wind had come. It then came to my mind that I did tell her once that when we two are away from each other, maybe I could hear her by the wind. It's just becaus she is my friend, she rememered it, and, really did it.No longer would I wonder why she held on to writting letters, instead of chatting online, of sending E-mails. For such a care-filled envolope, so heavy and so sincier, even if I was given a thousand chances, I wouldn't forgive my heart for failing in keeping the sealed friendship intactly.

Drawn by Jane. 吕艳艳

While she assured me that everything was going quite well for her, I could still feel the loneliness as well as sadness from each word of her letter, even from the paper she chose. It was a light purple paper with a little girl praying in the centre----a lonely girl.

The wind came by again, this time, accompanied by a white cloud, which, was specially shaped like theheart. By wind maybe, I thought. As the dusk came near, I whispered to the wind, to my heart “ Best Wishes for you too, my dear friend!”

ife is all about listening to your heart and chasing yourdreams. That’s the essence of

3 idiots, directed by the supremely talented Rajkumar Hirani. The first time I saw the title, I was wondering what can happen among three idiots. But the film surprised me and deeply touched me. It taught me how to be myself and how to live a life. No matter how many difficulties are there waiting for us, we don’t have the excuse to escape. Just face it bravely. Many times, we will be restricted by the circumstances and conditions around us. But the lead character Rancho taught us to strive for what we want rather than give up.

The movie begins when the two friends Farhan and Raju embark on a quest for a lost buddy. As they make their way through the beautiful landscape to an unknown city to find their friend Rancho, another journey begins. An inner journey through their memories, which tells the story of Rancho. He was totally different from other students, when they were focusing on high marks and promising careers, Rancho was calmly seeking his road to become an engineer. He studied engineering was not for a good job, richness or anything else, but just because it was his dream. He just wanted to be who he was, even though he would often be laughed at. But that was him——the impressive free thinker, who, in his unique way touched and changed his friends’ lives.

Very often, we’ve read news reports about students committing suicide because they don’t feel that they can live up to the ir

family’s pressure and expectations. This was the same for Farhan and Raju. As forFarhan, he was eager to be a field photographer since he was a little boy, but his family forced him to be a great engineer. They didn’t even give him the chance to make a choice. What was worse, Raju, who was good at his study at first, now let himself be tied by the endless responsibilities of his family. He never gotthe first place in class anymore.

Both of the two guys carried a huge burden on their shoulder rather than chase their own dreams. And it was not until Rancho appeared did they realize the importance of their own dreams. Rancho sent Farhan’s photos to a famous photographer secretly, and created a chance for him. With an exciting reply, the photographer said that he was looking forward for Farhan’s arrival to be an assistant of him. As a result, Farhan got up the courage to communicate with his father and successfully persuaded him at last.

21.Spring/Summer 2011 ~

And Raju, when the headmaster tried to punish Rancho because of a mischief, he had to make a difficult choice between himself and Rancho. A choice to betray his friend, or himself to drop out from the school. However, he didn’t want to be the accomplice of the headmaster just for his own benefit. As a result, Raju jumped out of the window and wanted to escape the cruel selection. He chased his dream with the cost of losing his two legs, but just as he said,“ I didn’t really stand up until I lost my legs.” When he was sleeping in the hospital, Rancho and Farhan tried every mean they can come up with to awaken their dear friend. Maybe it’s a littleridiculous, but even then they were trying their best to drive away the great pressure on Raju.

Comprehensively speaking, after watching the whole movie, what impressed me most was the saying “All is well”. It told us that everything will be OK as it goes. Once we devoted to one thing with passion and whole heart, success will come to us unnoticed. “All is well” is just like a magic spell. It is not only Rancho’s motto, but also a motto that can be adapted to every one’s life.

Do yourself and your family a favor. Follow the freedom of your dream. Live the life like wind. Sometimes behaving like an idiot can be happier, just like the movie showed us. Three Idiots is a movie reallyworth watching.

(An Imagined Interview with Director Rob Marshall)

By Alice (张小芳)

Recently, a new film is playing in the cinemas. It is

called Pirates of the Caribbean: on Stranger Tides. Penelope Cruz acts as the captain Jack’s old mistress, and Johnny Depp is the captain. He is a famous American Hollywood actor. He started to act in Pirates of the Caribbean movies in 2003. This latestfilm is directed by Rob Marshall. In 1993, Rob Marshal designed the dance for the famous musical play Kiss of the Spider Woman, and this play earnedseveral great prizes. Later, he directed another play Chicago and also designed the dance for it. This filmwas credited for the Tony prize and other prizes. What’s more, he directed other movies like Nine, andMemoirs of a Geisha. So, today we have the honor to

invite Rob Marshall to our program. Welcome.(H=the host R=Rob Marshal)

H: Hello, Mr Marshal, glad to see you. So, what’s your idea about this film or what gave you the idea to create this film? R: Um, actually, when I was told that I would be the director of this film, I was really excited. I always hoped to work with Jonny Depp, and now I have the opportunity. Besides, I’m trying to direct different types of films like action movies and adventure movies.H: Is that so? As we all know, Pirates of the Caribbean is a famous brand which is founded before, in that case, were you worried that you could not put some new ideas to this film?R: In my opinion, this film is new story with a lot of new persons and things. It gives me more space to think or imagine so that I can put my own ideas to this film.H: Then, how did you prepare for this film at the beginning?R: Um, before photography, I spent a lot time focusing on the characters and the story. You know, there are so many things in it that could distract my attention, if so, it will be a film without apparent theme. It would be terrible.H: We all know that you have experience directing dance and musical films, so do you think it is helpful in this movie?R: I’m sure it is useful. Personally, there are some similarities between musical movies and action movies. In some degree, the characters and the story can be played more vividly by dance or the actions of the body.

23.Spring/Summer 2011 ~

H: So, what’s your feeling after it was finished?R: Excited, relaxed, and expectant. After all, it’s a great work and I want it to be a great also. In addition, I hope that it willbe accepted by the audience and they will like this film. H: As we all know, the last two films Pirates of the Caribbean made a big hit and they were not directed by you. So, do you have the confidence to surpass these two films?

R: (smile) It’s hard to say. It’s just released in China, and each film has its own unique style. But, I hope so.H: Well, could you tell us something about this film such as the story?R: Um, the film unfolds in searching for the fountain of youth for clue. And it still remains in the humorous mystery-adventure style. The thrilling fighting is also an important part in it.Meanwhile, I added the effect of 3-D to this film which will give audience more excitement.H: Wow, it sounds great. So, how are you used to photograph this movie in 3-D? R: Actually, I have learned it in Sony Company before. Though it’s so complicated, I have charged the basic elements. And, I need to learn over photographing.H: I very hope this film will be a big hit.R: I hope so. Thank you.H: Thanks for you accepting our invitation.R: My pleasure.

Song Reviews ❤ Oh Sunshine 「Beautiful」

This combo is from Tokyo. The song Beautiful is sung in a lazy voice by Emily Connor. Combined with Mikio Hirama’s guitar playing with rock flavor, it tastes like blueberry pie, a bit dark and sweet.

☂ Janice 「Chocolate Ice」「My Eyes Don’t Lie」Janice’s music is transparent, like water drops

distilled slowly. Hearing the songs is like sewing a seed in your heart which can bloom later. Her comfortably mellow voice against the poetic melody makes people’s hearts warm. You can find satisfaction in her songs.

♫ Linus’ Blanket 「Signal Waltz」Linus’ Blanket is an independent Korean band

headed by Yenogene. Signal Waltz is a song from the albumLabor in Vain. The song is as fresh and honeyed as the album cover. You can sense the blue sky and soft clouds ofsummertime, while losing yourself in the mild and moderate melody---a feeling of being sweetened.

Album Reviews❉ Pascal Pinon 「Pascal Pinon」

Even though I don’t understand the Icelandic language; it feels like drinking milk tea. This four-person band recorded in a room filled with the smell of friendship. This album which is arranged delicately is quite suitable for listening to at the moment of bedtime fantasy.

29.Spring/Summer 2011 ~

★Xiaoxue Liang 「Floral Times」Songs on the album Floral times are selected from

all of his musical creatures for all those who have experienced, or are experiencing, or will experience their floral times. I particularly recommend the song Simple Sea from this album. Listening to this song, you will have the feeling of peace, lightness and sorrow. It makes you sink into deep thinking.

◆ Yanzi Sun 「It’s Time」In her diary, Yanzi wrote that she breathed slowly

and waited to publish her new album It’s Time, which she had worked on for four years. She showed her appreciation to all the fragility. The songs have a kind of magic power which can catch your ears and you can’t stop listening to it. Yanzi is an independent and cool girl. You will like her.

Editor's Note :

I can’t remember when the first time I got to know the

music was. The foremost voice in my memory perhaps is my

mom’s as she sang the tunes at the head of the bed in order to

coax me sleep. It

was not quite in

tune but warm.

Now I do not just listen

to the music but

often close my eyes to

that beautiful

melody and

something deeper resonates within me. We infatuated with the melody

that can make us feel comfort. And now the music is seeking your

listening ears.

In my mind festivals in summer always smell of flowers and love since summer is a passionate season and several festivals in summer are all related to showing your love to others, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and different kinds of rose days. I think the flower is a classical symbol of romance. Knowing how to choose appropriate flowers for different festivals is very important. I’m glad to share some of my knowledge about this with you.

CarnationsWhen May comes, I will plan to buy

carnations to surprise my mother. There is a heart-warming story about Mother’s Day and carnation. The May 9th of 1906 was a heartbreaking day for Anna Jarvis when her mother left her forever. After a year, in her mother’s 1st commemoration, Anna suggested that everyone came to the grave

adorning themselves with white roses in memory of her mother. At the same time, she wrote letters to many important people about taking the second Sunday of May as the Mother’s Day. With her efforts, this holy festival was formally established in 1914. Then in 1934, America government issued the memorial postage stamps about Mother’s Day where a gracious mother was delighted to stare at a bouquet of beautiful carnations. With the stamp’s circulation, carnation was then regarded as mother’s flower.

As we all know,Red and pink carnations are best for giving to our mothers because they represent deep love, while yellow is appropriate for relationship between friends. The number of carnations isn’t important, only one carnation can also make mother happy because of your loving thoughtfulness.

Dendrobium Nobile OrchidI ever heard a legend from a Dai friend. In ancient Dai nationality, the third day

of a new year in Dai Li was for sun god’s visit, the most beautiful girl in colorful dress would lift yellow Dendrobium Nobile Orchid to him so that he would give revitalization and hope to this tribe. Then Dendrobium Nobile Orchid was considered as a flower with staunch, brave temperament which is like sun god and it matches well with father.

This flower is popular as a Father’s Day gift, especially in Taiwan and Japan. Last Father’s Day, I gave a bouquet of Dendrobium Nobile Orchid to my father, he

41.Spring/Summer 2011 ~

even took a picture with the flowers because he was very excited for getting a gift from his daughter. Maybe my father’s love isn’t as direct as mother’s, he also expects me can show my love to him.

RoseWe all know that Valentine's Day is a traditional festival for lovers, but now

with people’s yearning to express their love and friendship, other rose days have been established. Have you heard of them? Then let me to show several rose days in summer.

Yellow and Rose Day is on May14th. This day doesn’t exist for lovers, but for friends, colleagues or neighbors to care about. Kiss Day is on June 14th which is ready for lovers to give a kiss to beloved. And Silver Day is on July 14th is a day for boyfriends to introduce their girlfriends to their family.

On August 14th is Green Day, a day for taking a lovers’ tour to enjoy the charm of nature. Last summer I travelled to a city in this day and happened to witness a romantic scene in a park. A boy with light eyes lifted a big bunch of beautiful roses and proposed to a cute girl, friends around them flew many colorful balloons with banners at the same time. “Marry me” “Accompany every Green Day, every valentine’s day with you” “with your hand for a lifetime” and many other professions of love flew to the sky and became the beautiful scenery. Idon’t know if the girl agreed at last, but I am sure this scene would also became a beautiful part of my memory about Green Day. And on this day, green rose is appropriatesince everyone hope their love would keep young and great-hearted.

And in these rose days, rose is a perfect gift of course. Different color of rose has different message so that we should be careful about that. Generally, white rose is a symbol of pure love, and red rose is for deep and passionate love. But yellow is often for an apology or parting.

These festivals in summer are full of deep love for our parents, friends and lovers, though some festivals haven’t become so well known yet. We celebrate festivals mainly because we want to express our feelings to our beloved and flowers are never out of fashion. Let’s show our love with beautiful flowers this summer!

The song of memory (One)

● by Cristy(封霞萍)

The following funny stories or words are all true. They happened when we were in building A7 room 510. At that time we were freshmen, and we lived in the six-person dormitory. There were really a lot of interesting memories. I feel so lucky that I recorded some. So, I want to share them here with you.

ne day, Sophie was taking a shower in the washroom. When Cristy heard the sound

of the washroom door opening, she knew that Sophie was finished, so she took her nightclothes and began to climb down from her bed. Half way down, she heard another strange sound: “peng!” When everyone turned their heads around, we saw Sophie was lying on the ground in a very graceful posture. We were all frozen and no one knew how she fell down. Then Sophie stood up slowly and went to her bed fingering her sore legs. She looked at her torn nightclothes she was wearing, and then pointed the new nightclothes which were put on the bed, yelling out painfully, “Why? Why did I buy you today?” Because I knew that I would need you! Oh, my god!

One Thursday, Martina was busy sending messages. The ring tones kept ringing.Cristy said, “Hey, I think you’d better get 10 more hands so that you can answer messages more quickly.”But Joyce said, “How will that help? She still only has one mobile phone.”

Someone said, “I am so poor that I only have money.”Tina often says that she is so poor that there are no more words in her poor brain to finish her thesis.

One night, everything was so boring. Martina complained, “I want to chat with someone else so much!”Sophie answered: “You can call 10086.”

Maybe the words and pictures seem to be very normal; however, the every moment is my most beautiful memories. It is sure that we will forget some things when we become older, so I'm happy I've kept this habit of recording the little momentsand taking photos of everywhere I have been.

I like travelling.I haven’t been to many places, but

I cherish every chance I have. Every city, every place must have somewhere that is interesting, attractive and charming. If you enjoy it with your heart, you will meet beauty at thecorner.

I remember the wide sea, the mew gull, the line between sky and ground. Icarry my dress and run on the golden beach, feeling the freedom. When Ilook at the sea as far as I can, I always think that the whole world is dark blue and it will never come to an end.

I like travelling.I haven’t been to many places, but
