Dr. Gary M. Penfield received the Special Lifetime Achievement Award. Penfield, the retired Vice President for Student Affairs, was inducted into RIC’s Hall of Fame in 2011. Penfield positively impacted the lives of generations of students and made significant contributions to the college during a 38-year career where he was responsible for overseeing essential departments on campus including the Counseling Center, Donovan Dining Center, Health Services, Athletics, Residential Life and Housing and the Office of Student Life. He has been recognized by the higher education community both locally and nationally during his dis- tinguished career. James L. White ’74 received the Alumnus of the Year Award. A former soccer goalie and baseball pitcher, White was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000. A longtime supporter of the college, he moved to California after graduation and paved a successful path in the business world where he started JL White Technical Sales, Inc., a technical sales and marketing company that specializes in advanced polymers and fluidic solutions for high-tech, biotech, medical and semiconductor markets. Now president of JL White, LLC, Jim travels the world, consulting and selling advanced polymer materi- als and fluidic solutions. Jo-Ann D’Alessandro ’88 received the Alumni Staff Award. D’Alessandro is currently the Associate Athletic Director and was a 1999 inductee into the Athletic Hall of Fame. An outstanding guard for the women’s basketball team during her undergraduate days, D’Alessandro is the program’s all-time leader in assists, while ranking third in scoring. She is also an inductee to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame, the North Providence Sports Hall of Fame and the Sons of Italy Hall of Fame. Rainone was named the Rhode Island High School Division IV Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1997. Rhode Island College held its annual Alumni Awards Dinner at Donovan Dining Center on Thursday, May 7 and three Athletic Hall of Famers were honored for their contributions to the college.

The Emo DiNitto/Rhode Island Chapter of The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, Inc. honored Rhode Island College Athletic Hall of Famer Tony Rainone ‘73 with its Contribution to Amateur Football Award at its 28th Annual Awards Dinner on May 4 at the Crowne Plaza in Warwick.

Men’s Golf Finishes 28th at NCAA ChampionshipsThe Rhode Island College

men’s golf team finished in a 28th-place tie (41 teams) with a two-day total of 620 (303, 317; +44) at the 2015 NCAA Div. III Men’s Golf National Championships played at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center on May 13.

Junior Jonathan Cooper, a Northeast All-Region and First Team All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference selection, finished in a

tie for 57th with a two-day score of 151 (74, 77; +7).Senior Patrick Ford finished in a tie for 78th with a score of 153 (74, 79;

+9). Senior Ryan Butler shot a 156 (73, 83; +12) to finish in a tie for 114th. Freshman Drew Quirk finished in a tie for 154th with a two-day score of 161 (84, 77; +17), while junior Pete Camerlengo rounded out the RIC squad, finish-ing in a tie for 186th, with a 167 (82, 85; +23).

Head Coach Greg Gammell’s team was making their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after clinching the club’s fourth straight GNAC title in the fall.

Rhode Island College sent five representatives (three men; two women) to the NCAA Div. III Men’s and Women’s Track & Field National Championships, which were hosted by St. Lawrence University on Thursday and Friday, May 21-22.

Sophomore Steven Vazquez competed in the high jump and earned his third career All-American honor with a second place finish. Vazquez took home All-New England honors with a first place fin-ish in the high jump (2.14m), which broke his own program record, on May 2. Vazquez took home N.E. Alliance honors with a first place finish in the high jump (2.06m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25.

Junior Edward Cummins earned All-American honors in the hammer with a sixth place finish. Cummins earned All-ECAC honors with a sixth place finish in the hammer (57.23m) at the ECAC Championships on May 14-15. He earned All-New England honors with a fourth place finish in the hammer (58.54m), which broke his own pro-

gram record, on May 2. Cummins took home N.E. Alliance honors in three events at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25. He finished first in the hammer (56.82m), seventh in the discus (40.13m) and eighth in the shot (13.39m).

Senior Craig Amado competed in the triple jump and finished 12th. Amado took home the ECAC Championship and earned All-ECAC honors in the triple jump (15.15m) setting a new school record with a first-place effort, at the ECAC Championships on May 14-15. He earned All-New England honors with a second place finish in the triple jump (14.86m) at the N.E. Championships on May 2. Amado earned N.E. Alliance honors in two events at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25. He placed second in the triple jump (14.76m) and a fifth in the long jump (6.90m).

Senior Daria Braboy competed in the triple jump. and finished 12th. She earned All-ECAC honors with a fifth place, and new school record, finish in the triple jump (11.84m) at the ECAC Championships on May 14-15. Braboy earned All-New England honors and placed fifth in the triple jump (11.55m) at the N.E. Championships on May 2. Braboy also took home three N.E. Alliance honors at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25. She placed first in the triple jump (11.49m), second in the 400m (57.58) and fifth in the 200m (26.72).

Sophomore Destinee Barrette competed in the ham-mer and finished 12th. Barrette earned All-ECAC honors with a second place finish in the hammer (51.14m) at the ECAC Championships on May 14-15. She earned All-New England honors and placed second in the hammer (51.48m) at the N.E. Championships on May 2. Barrette took home N.E. Alliance honors by taking first in the ham-mer (48.30m) at the N.E. Alliance Championships on April 25.

Ten current Rhode Island College student-athletes and one alumnus were recognized by the honorable, Nicholas A. Mattiello, Speaker of the House, and the Rhode Island House of Representatives at a reception held in the House Chamber at the Rhode Island State House on April 13.

The event was designed to give significant public recognition to men and women from the Community College of Rhode Island, Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island who have had significant achievements in their academic and athletic pursuits at their respective institutions. The honorees have also demonstrated exemplary citizenship and community service.

The 10 Scholar-Athletes from Rhode Island College were: Senior Emmanuel Asiedu (men’s soccer); Senior Daria Braboy (women’s track & field); senior Chelsea Brown (women’s tennis); Sadie Campanella (women’s tennis); junior Edward Cummins (men’s track & field); senior Jarell Forbes (men’s track & field); senior Jenna Pare’ (women’s cross country); senior Katelyn Sykora (softball); sophomore Steven Vazquez (men’s track & field); senior Autumn Wosencroft (women’s track & field).

Athletic Alumni from each school were also honored. Robert Fuoroli ‘68 was RIC’s Athletic Alumnus Award recipient.

Fuoroli is a former baseball student-athlete at Rhode Island College who went on to a long and distinguished career as an educator, multi-sport official and charitable volunteer.

Asiedu & Forbes Share John E. Hetherman Award; Stacy Pokora Receives Helen M. Murphy Award

Rhode Island College seniors Emmanuel Asiedu (men’s soccer) and Jarell Forbes (track & field) were named the co-recipients of Rhode Island College’s John E. Hetherman Award, while senior Stacy Pokora (softball) received the Helen M. Murphy Award at the college’s annual Cap and Gown ceremony on April 29. Asiedu also received the Bourget Family Scholarship Award.

The awards are based not only on ath-letic prowess, but also values community and campus involvement. The recipients must be student-athletes who par-ticipate in intercollegiate athletics, be good students and have demonstrated interest and participation in campus activities.

Senior Daria Braboy received a Distinguished Student-Athlete Award from the Rhode Island Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (RIAIAW) at a banquet hosted by Providence College on April 29.

One of the great track & field athletes to ever compete for the Anchorwomen, Braboy has been earn-ing conference and regional recognition, and rewriting the history book since she stepped on campus in 2011.

She is made her sixth overall appearance at the NCAA Track & Field National Championships this spring. Over the course of her career, Braboy, earned 21 N.E. Alliance, 12 All-New England and four All-ECAC awards.
