踏進2019年第四季，我們將會在11月初為大家送上壓軸展覽「塵封璀璨 ── 阿富汗古文物」，展出二百多件（套）來自阿富汗四個考古遺址和墓地的古文物，當中不乏金光閃閃及價值連城的文物，包括王冠、腰帶、手鐲及其他飾物，以至象牙雕刻和玻璃器物等。

為配合這麼特別的展覽，我們準備了一系列的特備節目，包括可以讓大家化身為工匠的手作坊、由藝術家帶領的集體創作活動，以及在歷史博物館舉辦的大型夜間親子節目「非一般夜遊博物館」，希望透過戲劇導賞、創意手作坊、集體遊戲等，在欣賞阿富汗的璀璨古文物之餘，為各位帶來有趣及難忘的體驗。

我們的分館在這一季也會與民同樂，葛量洪號滅火輪展覽館及孫中山紀念館將分別於10月及11月舉辦同樂日，除了工作坊及音樂表演環節外，還有穿越時空的虛擬實境體驗及深度遊活動。至於現正進行更新工程的海防博物館，本季將會舉辦多次田野考察，與大家一起走訪多個軍事遺址。我們更備有不同活動予中小學校參加，包括體驗活動及互動劇場，期望為莘莘學子提供輕鬆學習歷史的方式。

As we enter the final quarter of 2019, we are all set to launch the last exhibition of the year. Opening in early November, Glistening Treasures in the Dust – Ancient Artefacts of Afghanistan showcases over 200 items (sets) of artefacts unearthed from four archaeological sites and ancient tombs in Afghanistan, including dazzling goldware, priceless relics such as crowns, belts, bangles and other accessories, as well as ivory sculptures and glassware.

To complement this special exhibition, we have prepared a series of thematic craft workshops and creative group activity led by artists, and we are also organising a large-scale family evening at the Hong Kong Museum of History: Unusual Night Visit to Museum includes a theatre performance, creative workshop and group games, all of which will give participants the opportunity to admire the sumptuous relics from Afghanistan while enjoying an exciting and memorable experience.

Our branch museums will also be sharing lots of enjoyment with the public in the last quarter of the year. The Fireboat Alexander Grantham Exhibition Gallery and Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum are both organising fun days, in October and November respectively, where visitors can take part in workshops, enjoy musical performances, go on an in-depth guided tour and even play time-travelling VR games. The Museum of Coastal Defence, which is currently undergoing a major revamp, is also organising a number of field trips to historic military sites this quarter. We have also prepared a wide range of activities for primary and secondary school students introducing them to exciting and fascinating ways to learn history, including interactive theatre performances and school outreach programmes in which they will experience what life was like during the Japanese occupation.

十九世紀中葉以來，華僑雖然已開始僑居加州，並聚居於三藩市，惟1906年的大地震波及全城，早期的建築、文物和文獻罕有留存。加上1950至1970年代加州不斷興建高速公路，造成無數城鎮重建發展，甚至衰落或消失。大自然與人為的因素造成華僑聚居地的建築群銳減和消失，歷史文獻和文物非常缺乏。現在少數華人活動遺址和文物文獻能倖存保留，幾乎都在地點偏遠之處，故能倖免於公路或城市發展帶來的破壞。本館現籌劃中的華僑專題展將有不少文物來自兩個加州的小埠鎮，分別是非立當（Fiddletown）及軒佛（Hanford），並透過重構主題場景來展示。

其一，以非立當的朝記雜貨店為藍本，重構兼具中醫中藥元素的雜貨店場景。這種雜貨店是十九世紀末至二十世紀中美國華人商鋪的典型。雜貨店可展示當年華僑的食用貨品、藥物，以至貨單、商業往還文獻、貨款與個人匯款的收據、書信等等，從實物反映華僑日常生活以至華商經營的狀況。

其二，以軒佛唐人巷的關帝廟為藍本，重構華人廟宇場景。美國華僑史上幾乎每有華人聚居之地，都曾經有廟宇出現。廟宇是華僑維持民間信仰、尋求心靈慰藉以及慶祝傳統節日的地方。華僑與會館等同鄉組織息息相關，廟宇大多數由會館興建及維持，可以顯示華僑如何維持民間信仰與文化傳統。

透過上述的主題場景，我們將會呈現加州華人僑居太平洋的彼岸時，如何在物質及精神上依賴香港的物資補給，並說明香港與海外華人的聯繫，絕非單單是華人出入內地的中轉站。綜觀華僑的一生，都離不開「香港」的影子。

Even though Chinese immigrants settled in California as early as the mid-19th century, most of the architecture, relics and historical documents related to their lives at the time are few and far between. The earthquake and subsequent fire that struck San Francisco in 1906 made matters worse, causing substantial damage to the city. The extensive construction of highways in California from the 1950s to the 1970s resulted in many towns being redeveloped, and some disappeared. Both natural and human factors led to the damage and disappearance of architectural clusters and historical records and relics of the early Chinese communities. Almost all of the few historical Chinese sites, relics and historical records that remain are in remote parts of California, as they were not damaged or lost during road construction or urban development. Two examples are Fiddletown and Hanford, from which we will reconstruct two period settings in the planned exhibition. The two large thematic settings are as follows:

1.Chew Kee Grocery Store in Fiddletown: This was a typical Chinese shop in the United States during the late 19th to mid-20th century. Displayed in the grocery store will be food items, everyday goods, medicines and general merchandise consumed by Chinese compatriots in those days, along with relics like manifests, business transaction records, receipts for payment of goods and personal remittances, and correspondence. The everyday lives of Chinese compatriots and the business operations of Chinese merchants will be depicted through these physical objects.

2.The Kwan Ti Temple in China Alley in Hanford: Almost every Chinese community in the United States had a temple. The Chinese communities practised folk religion, sought spiritual comfort and celebrated traditional festivities in the temples. The temples were generally built and managed by the native associations, with which the Chinese immigrants were intricately related. This will show how the Chinese in California maintained their folk religions and cultural traditions.

These period settings will demonstrate how Hong Kong supported the overseas Chinese communities both in material and spiritual terms. Hong Kong was definitely more than a stop for Chinese emigrants to leave and enter their motherland. The influence of Hong Kong was felt in all aspects of life among the Chinese diaspora.

本地葡裔人士熱衷體育運動，足球更是他們的強項之一。早於1919年西洋波會便組織足球隊參加香港足球總會舉辦的聯賽，曾培育告山奴兄弟等一代名將，昆仲二人更於1930年代先後獲選為香港代表隊成員。到了1950年代，A. G. 山度士和好友杜永權成為二戰後的葡裔球壇名將，亦是香港代表隊成員。當中A. G. 山度士的五個兒子都與足球結下不解之緣，最為香港人熟悉的要數曾為港隊和多支甲組勁旅效力的名將山度士。

山度士於六歲開始接觸足球，十二歲時經其「契爺」杜永權引薦，先後加入港燈青年軍及南華青年軍。十六歲時，山度士被南華保送至荷蘭飛燕諾受訓，期間更獲得球王告魯夫指導。

1985年，剛滿十八歲的山度士正式於香港甲組足球聯賽亮相，不久已成為南華的中場主力，為球隊奪得多項重要錦標，個人更屢獲殊榮，包括1987至1988年度最佳年青球員、1989至1991年連續三屆香港傑出運動員、以及1990和1991年連續兩屆香港足球先生等。

當山度士於2002年宣佈退役時，其所效力的晨曦足球隊更為他舉辦個人告別賽。在七千多名觀眾的掌聲歡送下，山度士完成其職業足球員生涯，轉職足球教練，為香港球壇培育新血。

Local Portuguese people are sports enthusiasts, and football is one of their strengths. As early as 1919, the Club de Recreio football team participated in the league organised by the Hong Kong Football Association. The club trained the Gosano brothers, who were members of the Hong Kong football team in the 1930s. In the 1950s, Arthur G. Santos and his good friend J.H. Toledo, who represented Hong Kong in international tournaments, emerged as the most prominent Portuguese footballers after the Second World War. The five sons of A.G. Santos are all intricately connected to football. Representing Hong Kong and several first-division football clubs, Hong Kong footballer Leslie George Santos is the best known among them.

Leslie George Santos started playing football when he was just six years old. At the age of 12, he was introduced by his father’s close friend, Toledo, to the youth teams of the Hongkong Electric Company and later the South China Athletic Association. When he was 16 years old, South China sent him to the Netherlands to train with the football club Feyenoord Rotterdam, under the guidance of football legend Johan Cruyff.

In 1985, the 18-year-old Santos represented South China in the Hong Kong First Division League. Soon he became a key midfielder, helping South China win a number of high-profile tournaments. He also won an array of personal accolades, including the Best Young Player award in 1987–1988, the Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards for three consecutive years from 1989 to 1991, and the Hong Kong Footballer of the Year in 1990 and 1991.

When he announced his ret i rement from professional football in 2002, Sun Hei Sports Club, the football team he played on at the time, organised a farewell match for him. Santos ended his professional career to the applause of over 7,000 football fans. He continued to contribute to Hong Kong football as a coach to train new players.

The First World War broke out in the summer of 1914. As war causalities increased, the British and French forces faced a huge labour shortage, so they turned to China for help. Liang Shiyi (1869–1933), who was the then Secretary-General of the Presidential Office of the Republic of China, proposed the strategy of ”using labourers as soldiers” to help Britain and France fight the German forces, paving the way to reclaim sovereignty over Shandong.

The British and French forces recruited Chinese labourers from northern China and coastal areas, such as Weihai, Qingdao, Tanggu, Pukou, Yunnan and Hong Kong. Lee Man Company, which was founded in Hong Kong in 1916, set up a recruitment centre in Lai Chi Kok to hire Chinese labourers for the French forces. When the labourers were hired, they were sent to a depot for temporary stay, where they were offered meals as they waited to board a ship to Europe. Over a period of five months, a total of 3,221 Chinese labourers left Hong Kong in five groups.

Initially, the Chinese labourers went for Europe via the Indian Ocean, the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea, or by way of the Cape of Good Hope before continuing north along the African continent. But when Germany began to launch submarine warfare, they were taken eastward across the Pacific Ocean. Upon arriving in Vancouver, they were transported by rail to eastern Canada, from where they crossed the Atlantic to Europe or they travelled by sea from Vancouver via the Panama Canal and then across the Atlantic. Some Chinese labourers died of illness or in German submarine attacks before arriving in Europe.

Hong Kong and WWI Chinese Labour Corps

Statistics reveal that some 140,000 labourers were recruited into the Chinese Labour Corps by Britain and France during WWI. The labourers worked in arsenals and shipyards, before being sent to dig trenches, build roads and bridges, and bury corpses. They even cleared mines and moved ammunition. Many of them were killed in the war.

Today, there are graveyards for the WWI Chinese Labour Corps in various European countries. Similar tombstones have been erected in Hong Kong’s Stanley Military Cemetery to commemorate the Chinese labourers who died in the line of duty during the WWI. Even though the Chinese labourers were non-combatants, they contributed immensely to the war. Therefore, in the new permanent exhibition, we will revisit the spirit of these dauntless men, who travelled to the other side of the world to assist in the war effort more than a century ago.

《日治時期的艱苦歲月》體驗活動Experiencing Hard Life during the Japanese Occupation

海防館會派員到校帶領同學們進行體驗活動，透過角色扮演及互動遊戲，認識和了解香港當時的民生苦況。Through role plays and interactive games, the student-participants will get a better understanding of the miserable life of the Hong Kong people during the time. Museum staff will come to the schools to deliver the programme.

每節30人 (小四至中三)，每間學校可申請一天兩節活動 / 每節約1小時，將與學校商議活動時間。30 students (P.4 - S.3) for each session: each school can apply for a maximum of 2 sessions a day / One hour per session, time to be confirmed with the applicant.

《香島上的黑色聖誕》互動劇場Interactive Theatre: Black Christmas

1941年至1945年期間，香港經歷了三年零八個月的悲慘歲月。劇場以戲劇結合現場互動，把日佔時期的民生苦況重現眼前，讓同學了解先祖輩一段慘痛的歷史，明白和平的可貴。

Hong Kong went through its bitter three years and eight months from 1941 to 1945. Using an interactive approach integrating elements of drama, we will re-enact the hardship experienced by the Hong Kong people during the Japanese occupation. It will provide an opportunity for the students to better understand the miserable experience of their ancestors, thereby realizing the value of peace.

孫中山紀念館一樓展覽廳Exhibition Gallery, 1/F, Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum

展覽闡述孫中山先生如何由一位立志懸壺濟世的醫科學生，搖身一變成為矢志救國的革命家。透過珍貴的文物，配合復原場景和歷史照片，重構孫中山先生的傳奇一生。參觀者既可對孫中山先生求學及革命事蹟有更全面的認識，也可得知孫中山先生曾公開表示其革命思想植根於香港的原因。

This exhibition aims at explaining how Dr Sun Yat-sen was transformed from an aspiring medical student into a renowned revolutionary leader. Supplemented by a scene setting and historical photographs, the invaluable artefacts help reconstruct the legendary life of this great Chinese statesman. Visitors can get a thorough understanding of his studies and revolutionary campaign, and understand why Dr Sun admitted that he developed his revolutionary ideas in Hong Kong.

Apart from going through Dr Sun Yat-sen’s activities in Hong Kong, this exhibition inspires visitors to probe into an intriguing question, that is, why and how Hong Kong in the late 19th century nurtured someone like Dr Sun, who possessed such progressive revolutionary ideas. With the display of invaluable artefacts, the exhibition also illustrates explicitly the role of Hong Kong as a revolutionary pivot in the late Qing era.

常設展覽Permanent Exhibitions

1866年11月12日出生的孫中山先生，是中國近代史上舉足輕重的人物。現在仍然有很多方法可以見到孫先生的身影，包括郵票、錢幣、銅像等。在孫中山紀念館內，便有三個孫先生的銅像，展現三段史蹟。

屹立於紀念館前的孫中山全身像，由著名雕塑家朱達誠老師製作，呈現孫中山先生在香港讀書的青年時代，朝氣勃勃，滿懷理想。1883年，17歲的孫先生來港後，先後入讀拔萃書室(今拔萃男書院)、中央書院(今皇仁書院)及香港西醫書院(已併入香港大學)，完成中學及大專教育。

在地下高層近甘棠第正門，放置了孫中山半身像，也是朱達誠老師的作品，呈現45歲的孫中山先生，身穿西裝，老成持重。1911年武昌起義爆發時，孫先生正在美國宣傳革命及籌款，其後經香港返到上海，並獲各省代表推選為臨時大總統，1912年1月1日晚在南京就職，宣布中華民國成立。

一樓展覽廳則展出一個由劉志遠先生捐贈的孫中山小半身像，由孫中山先生的日本友人梅屋莊吉訂製，合共100個，以紀念1929年6月1日在南京舉行的奉安大典，孫先生的遺體由北京移送至南京紫金山的中山陵墓園安葬。梅屋莊吉參與典禮，並將部分銅像送與宋慶齡及南京國民政府要員。

香港亦有其他地方安放孫中山銅像，包括中山紀念公園、皇仁書院及紅樓等，等待大家去發掘及認識。
