Visit the largest Open Air Museum of Rhineland- Palatinate and discover how people used to live and work here during the last 500 years. Starting in the 1970s, historic buildings were dismantled piece by piece at their original site and rebuild true to the original in the picto- rial Nachtigallental. It is intended to illustrate and make tangible the day-to-day life of the past. Forty buildings are set in a total of four museum villages and represent different regions: Rhine Hesse, Eifel, Hunsrück and Palati- nate, along the rivers Moselle, Nahe as well as the Mid- dle Rhine. New historic buildings are added regularly. In addition to the buildings, gardens, fields and meadows complete the overall approach. Endangered livestock and domestic animals who live and graze on pastures also convey the holistic idea of the Open Air Museum. The team wishes you a pleasant, entertaining and in- formative stay. Please visit us on event days. For example the “garden day” in the spring or the “historical end of season event” in November. Please ask us about our hands-on programs and themed guided tours for school classes, travel groups and work outings! Furthermore: toy exhibition, mill-trade exhibition, medicinal herb garden and butterfly adventure trail. Additionally, you can follow Frida and Anton, the two museum mice, to the various hands-on stations on the museum grounds. The associated booklet (German language) can be obtained at the entrance. Opening Hours: End of March – Beginning of November; daily except for Mondays, from 9 am – 6 pm. Last admis- sion at 5 pm. Additionally, the museum opens Mondays: June – August, as well as during school holidays and public holidays Here are a few pointers Depending on how thoroughly you intend to visit the museums grounds, your visit will take anywhere between two and four hours. The two kilometers long, signposted circular walk will guide you past all buildings. Looking to buy souvenirs, literature or local and regional products? The Museum shop, located in House Wolfersweiler, has all these items in stock. The museums tavern offers regional specialties. Additionally, a number of picnic areas can be found throughout the museum grounds. School classes, clubs, families and other groups can choose from a variety of programs; after booking them in advance, hands-on programs and themed guided tours are available. The historic skittle alley and the dance hall from Winterburg are the perfect places for family- or work outings as well as celebrations. It is even possible to get married here. Civil weddings are conducted in the town hall from Hasselbach. The house from Enkirch with its viniculture exhibition also offers a vinothek as well as a conference room, which can both be rented for your event. By request only, a wheelchair-accessible bus pro- vides guided tours. Our employees are always happy to help with any questions or wishes and take into consideration criti- cism, hints and suggestions. The visit is at your own risk. For your own safety follow the signposted paths and keep off unmarked ways and construction sites. Due to fire prevention reasons, smoking is strictly prohibited. To avoid unnecessary cleaning costs, please use the provided waste bins. Due to free range poultry we ask you to please keep your dog on a leash at all times. We urge you to interact respectfully with our ani- mals. Feeding them is prohibited. For your visit we recommend sturdy footwear and comfortable yet adequate clothing for any weather condition. You will find museum discovery sheets, suited for various ages at the museum entrance. They are provided free of charge. A playground is located near the museum res- taurant. The supervisory duties by parents and teachers over children and adolescents apply to the visit. Please make sure, that your children do not dam- age our buildings, animals and facilities. A diaper changing table can be found in each museum village. As the paths are designed according to historic examples they cause problems for wheelchair users and for the use of strollers. The signposted path is the easiest to travel. Wheelchair users should be accompanied by a strong person. This person needn’t pay the en- trance fee. Unfortunately several historical build- ings cannot be visited with a wheelchair due to their construction. A lavatory suitable for wheelchair users is located at House Dierbach in the Palatinate- Rhine Hesse village.
