February is another exciting month: On February 2 nd our fifth and sixth grade students went on our annual field trip to JA Biztown. JA Biztown is a mock town that has all kinds of job opportunities for the students to experience such as, Mayor, D.J. Bank Teller, Flight Attendant and CEO. The past few weeks the teachers have been preparing the students for this fabulous experience. The students even got to interview for the jobs they would like to do when they go to BizTown. It has been a very enriching experience for the students. I want to thank all the staff mem- bers who helped with the interviews. A big thank you goes to the teachers for preparing the students for the field trip. On February 10 th our Superintendent, Dr. James Veitenheimer, will be visiting New River Elementary from noon until 1:00 pm in our Media Center. All community members are encouraged to come and meet with Dr. V. Parent/Teacher Conferences this semester are the week of February 8 th . We will have early dismissal at 12:05 pm on February 11 th and 12 th to allow for conferences. We hope you all can make to hear all the wonderful things your students are accomplishing. We have a long weekend coming up for President’s Day. There will be No School on Monday, February 15 th . Our teachers in Grades 3-6 have been diligently preparing our students for the state test called AzMERIT. All schools in our district will be taking this test online. The testing window will start the week of April 4 th and will end on May 6 th . Once we have finalized a specific testing schedule we will send that to you so you will know what days your students will be tested. In addition, our 4 th grade students will be taking the AIMS Science test on April 14 th . DVUSD Honor Band Results Are In

Congratulations to Chloe Meyer and Kristen Johnson for being nominated and selected to perform for the 2016 DVUSD Honor Band at Barry Goldwater High School. Ethan Ellis was also nominated and se-lected as an alternate. Chloe, Kristen, and Ethan are Advanced Band students that were selected due to their hard work, talented playing, ability to read music and for quality of sound on their instrument. Chloe will represent New River Elementary on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at the Honor Band Con-cert. The concert is held at Barry Goldwater High School and begins at 7:00 p.m.

Good News! Tom Smith, a VFW representative came to our Student Recognition on Friday, January 29, 2016 and presented certificates and award pins to all the students that submitted a Patriot essay to them. Amber Pence was awarded her Patriot Pen Certificate and a check for $100 at the VFW Meet-ing as our Post winner. Kylie Cunningham was a runner-up. Certificate and pins were awarded to the following for their participation in the event: Natasha Bridges-Sokol; Sydney Dablemont; Leah Spielman; Adam Eckhardt; Cole Fields; James Krantz; Kayden Gustafson; Canyon Adams; Hayden Hancock; Zane Huddleston; and Gavin Lee. Way to go, New River!

New River Student Council Fundraiser Extended!!

We have almost reached our goal of $500.00!, so the New River Student

Council has extended the Penny Palooza Fundraiser until this Friday,

February 5, 2016. Bring in your spare change so your class can win a
