Happiness... long and fairly achieved.This study takes into consideration more than just the happiness of the people. It also measures the way in which such satisfaction is reached and the environmental cost of the process. Costa Rica also stood out in that respect, as the country produces happiness without costing the planet an arm and a leg.Finally, the icing on the cake, the country’s lifestyle provides for a very high life expectancy for its inhabitants (79.3 years), the third key element in the study.

In sum, what’s measured?Three things: citizen satisfaction, life expectancy and the environmental

cost of such happiness.

In other words, which countries do the best job on producing long, healthy and satisfying lives all the while using natural resources in a sustainable way.

The objective at the heart of this study is simple: Learn about the different social, political and economic models of various countries in order to discover those societies that are most IJ½GMIRX��WYWXEMREFPI�ERH�considerate of its citizens. Then, analyze and compare results to map out the ideas and values that can lead to the betterment of future societies.

This is what NEF does: It suggests innovations in our models of society. They consider it an error

to measure the development of a country only by its economic activity: The equation should also take into consideration the wellbeing of the people and the sustainability of the models in the long term.

El año 2009 Costa Rica obtuvo la primera posición en el Happy Planet Index (Índice del Planeta Feliz), un estudio global realizado por the New Economics Foundation (NEF) que condecoró a Costa Rica con la medalla de oro como el país más feliz del planeta! Este año 2012 el estudio se repitió y…Costa Rica la volvió a hacer. Nuevamente primer lugar entre un total de 151 países estudiados. Costa Rica sigue siendo el país donde los ciudadanos se sienten más satisfechos con sus vidas.

Felicidad...larga y bien lograda.Resulta que el estudio no mide solo la felicidad de las personas, sino también la manera en que esta satisfacción se logra y cual es el costo ambiental de esos procesos. Costa Rica también sobresale en esto. El país produce felicidad sin que al planeta le cueste un ojo de la cara.

Finalmente, como guinda del postre, este pequeño país ofrece a sus habitantes una alta expectativa de vida (79,3 años), el otro elemento clave en el estudio.

En resumen, ¿Que se mide?Se evalúa satisfacción ciudadana, expectativas de vida y costo ambiental del proceso. En otras palabras, que país hace mejor el trabajo de producir vidas largas, sanas y satisfactorias haciendo además un uso sostenible de sus recursos ambientales.El objetivo de la investigación es simple e inteligente: Estudiar los diferentes modelos sociales, políticos y económicos para descubrir que WSGMIHEHIW�WSR�QjW�I½GMIRXIW��sostenibles y consideradas con sus ciudadanos y en base a esas diversas experiencias, trazar nuevas ideas para mejorar las sociedades del futuro. Eso es lo que busca NEF: Sugerir innovaciones sostenibles que permitan mejorar nuestros modelos de sociedad. Ellos consideran un error medir el desarrollo tan solo por la actividad económica: La ecuación debe incluir el bienestar de las personas y la sostenibilidad del modelo en el largo plazo.

Hoy una vez más los ojos apuntan a Costa Rica, a su especial estilo de vida y a su modelo de sociedad. Una vez más este pequeño país da cátedra sobre como construir una sociedad satisfecha y sostenible.

Como están las cosas hoy, es fácil predecir que en los siguientes 20 años el mundo verá cambios inmensos y a un ritmo nunca antes visto.

Tecnología y creatividad serán los inseparables cómplices que construirán el mañana, pero lograr un buen o mal futuro dependerá más de nuestra capacidad de aprendizaje y de los valores globales que abrace nuestra especie en los años venideros.

¿Podemos realmente vislumbrar un buen futuro o los fatalistas tendrán razón? Energy will be produced at a much lower cost. Our food will be produced locally and in a more IJ½GMIRX�QERRIV��%RH�QER]�QSVI�sustainable solutions will be available to us.

Hablar con Sebastián es en sí toda una aventura. Una persona inusual, con historias nada comunes.

Pasó de ser un licenciado en ciencias políticas y económicas sin empleo a ser el reportero más innovador y prometedor de una gigantesca cadena internacional de noticias, en un proceso que incluyó un poco de casualidad y una alta dosis de causalidad.

Sebastián Castro es un tipo jugado y creativo que se construye la vida en cada paso, que le dice sí a las oportunidades o simplemente se las fabrica cuando estas no llegan. Causa y efecto para él no se dejan al azar. Es un producto que cada uno puede y debe confeccionar.

Aunque tiene sólo 24 años, al hablar con él y escuchar sus multifacéticos relatos, da la impresión de estar frente a alguien que ha vivido ya varias vidas.

Por el sendero de causa y efecto…Llegar a ser el I-Reporter estrella de CNN En Español y el rostro más joven de la cadena líder de noticias en Latinoamérica, fue un largo y empedrado proceso. Todo partió el 2009 cuando Sebastián, aún estudiante becado en Atlanta, decidió recolectar fondos para ayudar a sus compatriotas afectados por el terremoto de Cinchona en Costa Rica. Y nació el ‘Tico Tent Project’: En pleno invierno de Atlanta y en una transitada

zona de su universidad, Sebastián y sus amigos se instalaron a vivir día y noche en

tiendas de campaña…igual que aquellos que habían perdido sus casas en Costa Rica. Sin comodidades,

verdaderamente como refugiados.

Sebastian went from being an unemployed graduate in political science and economics to an innovative and promising reporter working for a huge international news channel. His journey included a bit of chance combined with a lot of determination. Sebastian Castro is the playful, creative type of person that builds his life one day at a time, step by step. He says yes to opportunities, or simply creates them through calculated risk when they are not directly served up. For him, one must not leave causality to chance. Life is a product that each and every one of us can and should mold into their desired destiny. Although he is only 24, talking to him and hearing his multifaceted story makes it seem like you’re speaking with someone who has lived several lives. Seriously.

Following the opportune path… However, Sebastian’s path to becoming the star iReporter for CNN in Spanish – the youngest face of the leading news network in Latin America – was a long process. It all started in 2009, when Sebastian – then a student on scholarship in Atlanta, decided to raise funds to help his compatriots affected by the earthquake in Cinchona, Costa Rica. He said: “A small table and a poster will not work. We need to communicate more about what it’s like day to day, living there, for the affected people. ‘ Thus was born the ‘Tico Tent Project’: In the middle of the winter in Atlanta and in a busy area of the university, Sebastian and his friends set out to live day and night in tents ... just like those who had lost their homes in Costa Rica . No amenities, no comforts – simply living as true refugees.

Las actividades que organizaron y las pancartas explicativas que rodearon a las carpas no dejaron a nadie indiferente, logrando recolectar PS�WY½GMIRXI�TEVE�½RERGMEV�GEWEW�TEVE�XVIW�HI�las familias más afectadas por el terremoto, construidas en alianza con la ONG Un techo para mi país.

La originalidad de su estrategia y el primer iReport enviado por Sebastián llamaron la atención de CNN. Al poco tiempo, le ofrecieron una pasantía en el programa Economía y Finanzas con Alberto Padilla, una pasantía que Sebastián transformaría en toda una academia a la que le sacaría el jugo gota a gota. Lamentablemente para él, la TEWERXuE�PPIKz�E�WY�½R�]�7IFEWXMjR�no continuaría en CNN.

Con algo de pena, pero con la IRIVKuE�]�IQTYNI�UYI�PI�HI½RIR��logró un trabajo para la FIFA en Sudáfrica, un trabajo que Sebastián convirtió en oportunidad de retomar su contacto con CNN. Junto con sus labores futboleras para FIFA, fue generando y enviando al canal nuevos iReports sobre el mundial, que una vez terminado darían paso a toda una serie de videos con aventuras por otros países africanos.

Ya que andaba por esos lados…luego del mundial se quedaría para recorrer el continente.

The signs and various activities surrounding the tents were quite powerful and impacted all those that came across it. Indifference was not an option. By the end of the demonstration they had collected IRSYKL�XS�½RERGI�LSQIW�JSV�XLVII�of the families devastated by the earthquake.

The uniqueness of this effort, coupled [MXL�7IFEWXMER W�½VWX�M6ITSVX��UYMGOP]�got CNN’s attention. Before he knew it, Sebastian was offered an internship at the Economy and Finance program. Sebastian milked the internship for all it was worth, learning as much as he possibly could. Sadly, the internship eventually came to a close, as did Sebastian’s time with CNN.

With a tinge of sadness, but also bounding with the energy and drive XLEX�HI½RIW�LMQ��7IFEWXMER�KSX�E�job working with FIFA during South Africa’s World Cup. Through this work Sebastian found an opportunity to resume contact with CNN. Alongside his work with FIFA, Sebastian started to generate and send iReports to CNN, which later give way to a series of video adventures in other African countries. After the cup, as he was already in Africa he continued traveling the rest of the continent.

His sincere form of reporting and his unique style soon recaptured the attention of CNN. And so, in January �����LMW�½VWX�JSVQEP�TVSNIGX�[MXL�'22�took shape: A two-month journey to the hidden corners of South America, “seeking out and telling a different kind of story – revealing things that few even knew existed.” And thus, the now famous iReport Adventurer was born ...

Today, a year and a half later, Sebastian Castro has become an icon of CNN’s new-age journalism– and over time has gone on to complete major English reporting assignments for CNN International. I prefer to look for positive journalism, a form of reporting that encourages people to appreciate life and believe in the future. I see citizen journalism as a way to integrate new information, as a direct path to innovation, a path to fresh information and fresh ideas. Today technology has democratized and globalized communication, and mass media is evolving based on these new possibilities. Formal journalism is not going away, but the rules are clearly changing. La juventud de hoy se las trae…Eso es muy claro y creo que será cada vez más notorio. El mundo actual es intenso, lleno de cambios y la juventud es justamente eso: Energía y adaptabilidad.

Además de la facilidad de absorber con rapidez las nuevas tecnologías y conocimientos disponibles, también veo a una juventud más informada, consciente, involucrada y decidida a ser parte más activa de la sociedad. La intensa evolución actual del conocimiento, ha hecho que sea menos útil el tener ‘una vasta experiencia’. Hoy más que la experiencia que se haya acumulado en las décadas previas, tiene mucho más peso la capacidad de aprendizaje y adaptación frente a lo que se viene en el corto plazo. Por eso siento que la juventud hoy tiene ventajas que históricamente nunca tuvo.

Hoy es común ver empresas multimillonarias creadas por ³GLMGSW´�HI����S����EySW��GMIRXu½GSW�GSRWEKVEHSW�ERXIW�de los 30 o incluso prodigiosos inventores que aún son

adolescentes. Hoy el mundo cuenta con un juventud más madura y mejor preparada para lo que viene.

Costa Rica es un país de paz, armónico, respetuoso y donde se vive sin mayores

sobresaltos. ¿Cuanto de la visión tica se cuela en tus reportajes?

…Costa Rica es un país afortunado y ser tico es un tremendo orgullo para mi aunque creo que en mi TIVMSHMWQS�XEQFMqR�LE]�QYGLE�MR¾YIRGME�HI�PS�UYI�LI�visto por el mundo. En Costa Rica nos ha tocado más fácil que en otros lugares, sin embargo al ver otras realidades uno descubre que para muchos, independientemente de su nacionalidad la cosas está bien cuesta arriba. Es importante entender eso y valorar lo que tengamos.

The intense evolution of worldwide knowledge today has made it less useful to have ‘vast experience’�MR�ER]�SRI�KMZIR�½IPH��8LI�ability to learn and adapt quickly far outweighs all of the extensive experience that has accumulated in previous decades – especially when considering what’s coming in the short term. Young people today have advantages that they’ve historically never had in the past. Today it is common to see multimillion dollar companies created by ‘boys’ that are only 20 or 25 years old, scientists making a name for themselves before the age of 30 or even prodigious inventors who are still in their teens. Today the world has a more mature youth that is better prepared for what lies ahead. Costa Rica is a country of peace, harmony and respect – a place where people live without major upheavals. How much of the Tico lifestyle factors into your reports? Costa Rica ... is a fortunate country, and being tico is a tremendous honor and a wise school for me. However, I think my journalism is EPWS�LIEZMP]�MR¾YIRGIH�F]�Q]�[SVPHZMI[��In Costa Rica we have had it easier than in many other places, but seeing the world from other perspectives you discover that for many, regardless of nationality, life is a constant uphill battle. It’s important to understand this and appreciate what we have.

Costa Rica nos sorprende con abundancia de animales no solo en parques nacionales y bosques, sino también con muchos pequeños visitantes en nuestros jardines, que con frecuencia se cuelan por cualquier ventana o puerta abierta de la casa.

Nos guste o no, siempre se las ingeniarán para entrar, pero tenemos la suerte de que en su gran mayoría son inofensivos, no se meten con nuestra comida ni suelen causar mayor disgusto. No es como Australia o África, donde los pequeños visitantes pueden matar. Aquí, a lo más dejan roncha y eso muy rara vez…

Partamos con los más notorios entre estos pequeñines visitantes: Los omnipresentes geckos, que con su blanco casi transparente decoran cada esquina, pared y lámpara de Costa Rica. Además de comerse unas cuantas arañas, mosquitos y otros insectos cada día, tienen la delicadeza de no intrusear en nuestros alimentos ni son transmisores de enfermedades, por lo que la convivencia con los humanos suele ser totalmente armónica.

Algo similar pasa con las ranas que viven usualmente ocultas en nuestros jardines, pero que en días de mucha lluvia suelen tomarse PE�GSR½ER^E�HI�FYWGEV�VIWKYEVHS�IR�PSW�EPIVSW�HI�PEW�GEWEW��

A otras ranitas más pequeñas les encanta meterse a nuestra piscina por las noches, en busca del eco que les hace sonar como súper ranas, logrando así atraer más hembras. Costa Rica never ceases to amaze us with its abundance of animals, not just in its national parks and forests, but also with much of its smaller tenants and visitors in our gardens every day. They often invite themselves into our homes, sneaking in through any open door or window.Whether we like it or not, XLI]�EP[E]W�½RH�E�[E]�XS�get inside, but luckily the vast majority of them are inoffensive – they don’t muddle with our food and they don’t make a habit of causing any large problems. This is not like Australia or Africa, where such tiny

visitors have the potential to kill. Here, in the worst-case scenario they’ll give you a rash – and this is very rare, indeed.

Let’s start with the most famous of these tiny guests: the omnipresent geckos, who with their almost transparent skin, decorate every corner, wall and lampshade in Costa Rica. In addition to eating countless spiders, mosquitoes and other insects each day, the geckos courteously do not invade our food supplies or transmit disease –making their coexistence with the human race completely and utterly harmonious. A similar harmony is found with the frogs that live concealed within our gardens –except on the rainy days [LIR�XLI]�KEMR�XLI�GSR½HIRGI�XS�PSSO�JSV�TVSXIGXMSR�MR�the gutters surrounding nearby houses. Ver por las mañanas a las simpáticas e hiperquinéticas ardillas juguetear por los arboles es una inyección de energía para el resto del día y una dosis de humor para empezar con más ganas. No tengo claro el porqué, pero verlas juguetear me divierte montones!Ocasionalmente también entran a casa algunos hermosos insectos con forma de hojas, unas grandes langostas multicolores o una que otra elegante mantis religiosa…

Claramente ‘nuestra casa’ no es tan solo nuestra. Para muchos otros es también un hogar. En realidad estos menos de 500mts2 son todo un barrio que también incluye: Un gran nido de hormigas corta-hojas y poblaciones de 3 otras variedades de hormigas más pequeñas. Un nido de pequeñas e inofensivas avispas junto a la puerta principal y un par más por los árboles. 4 iguanas verdes y 3 grandes garrobos que hicieron de pequeñas cavidades su morada permanente. Varias familias de aves con sus polluelos acampan sobre los arboles. 2 variedades de murciélagos duermen de día entre las plantas altas y comen de noche en el jardín.

Completando la población…unas 70 especies vegetales y cientos o tal vez miles de pequeños anélidos, moluscos, arácnidos, insectos y miriápodos. Ah! Y además 2 perros y 2 gatos.

Lo que llamaríamos comúnmente una casa de 4 personas, es en realidad todo un ecosistema plagado de vida. Probablemente al juntar y pesar a estos huéspedes más pequeños, sea mucho más peso y volumen que el sumado por los humanos dueños de casa. Coexistir en armonía con toda esta naturaleza no es tarea fácil, pero les garantizo que es una tarea posible y muy placentera.

Nos enseñan a llamarles bichos, a tenerles asco, miedo y repulsión. A irrespetarlos, pisotearlos o matarlos solo porque van pasando frente a nosotros. En casa hace 3 años hicimos un acuerdo: Si las pequeñas avispas de la entrada molestan de alguna forma, cambiaríamos el nido de lugar.

Como nunca han molestado, siguen en el sitio que ellas eligieron como un buen lugar para anidar y donde han estado prosperando sin molestar a nadie. Cambiarlas de sitio no sería difícil y tal vez hasta sería inofensivo para ellas. Pero…¿y si el nuevo lugar no es apropiado y la colonia se afecta? Como frenar la prosperidad HI�IWXE�QEKRu½GE�colonia solo por el antojo de controlar a la naturaleza!

Completing our community are about 70 species of vegetables and hundreds of thousands of small annelids, mollusks, arachnids, insects and myriapods. Oh! And let’s not forget two dogs and two cats.

There are some who would call this space, a four-person home – but in reality it’s an entire ecosystem bustling with life. In fact, if you were to weigh all of these tiny, peculiar houseguests, their sum total would surpass the total weight of the human beings in the house…by far!

To coexist in harmony with all of this wildlife is not an easy task, FYX�-�KYEVERXII�]SY�XLEX�MX�MW�E�TSWWMFPI�ERH�ZIV]�JYP½PPMRK�SRI��

We are taught to call them bugs, think on them as disgusting, scary and repulsive. As kids, we are taught to disrespect them, to step on them or kill them just because they are passing before us.

Three years ago we decided that if the wasps that were building their nest at our front door were to bite or bother us in any way, we’d move the nest to a different place.

Because they have never bothered us, the wasps continue to thrive in the spot that they originally chose as prime nesting real estate. -X�[SYPH�RSX�FI�HMJ½GYPX�JSV�YW�XS�GLERKI�XLIMV�PSGEXMSR�ERH�maybe it wouldn’t bother them – but…What if the new place that we chose did not suit them? How unjust would it be to put the brakes SR�XLI�TVSWTIVMX]�ERH�PMJI�SJ�XLMW�QEKRM½GIRX�GSPSR]�SRP]�SR�E�[LMQ�to control nature and our immediate surroundings?

Some people might think that this is an extreme example. You might think, why bother…they’re just wasps! Let me get to the heart of the matter: What right do we have to disrespect life? Have we won the right to bully just because we are a highly developed species?

Aquí algunas recomendaciones para hacer de su hogar un terreno sano y feliz…para todos sus habitantes!

· Cuando fumigue, por favor no arrase con todo. Sea selectivo en las áreas y también piense en las otras especies que afectará. Si lo que le preocupa son arañas y alacranes, pida al fumigador que use un producto exclusivo para arácnidos. Si son termitas, fumigue solo las zonas afectadas.

· Antes de atacar a la naturaleza que se entrometa en su zona residencial, piense si realmente es necesario hacerlo, si realmente le afecta, si hay algún método de solución que no incluya matar al visitante.

· Enseñe a sus perros y gatos a no atacar los animalitos que visiten su territorio.

· Cuide de no contaminar la tierra con químicos, aceites o detergentes.

· Siembre plantas y árboles eco-activos, es decir, que presten un servicio a otras especies. A las ardillas les encantan los cocoteros, los almendros y los marañones. Para los colibríes y mariposas, QYGLEW�¾SVIW��4EVE�PEW�EZIW��JVYXSW�]�WIQMPPEW��0EW�LIPMGSRMEW�]�platanáceas para que las mariposas pongan huevos. Guayabas e Indio Desnudo para alimentar a los monos.

· Enseñe a sus hijos a observar y comprender a la naturaleza. No les enseñe a temerle, pues enseñar miedos es regalarle futuras angustias. Precaución sí. Miedo no.

De paso, al enseñarle respeto por todas las formas de vida, también les estará haciendo más sencillo el aprender después a respetar más profundamente a sus semejantes.

Each species plays a biological role and is part of a delicate equilibrium of life, so each is vitally important. We must learn to live together with�REXYVI��RSX�XS�½KLX�against it.

Here are some recommendations for making your home and yard healthy and happy – for all of it’s inhabitants!

· When you fumigate, don’t simply spray everything. Be selective in which areas you spray, and please think about the other species that you will be affecting. If you are only worried about spiders and scorpions, choose a product that exclusively repels

arachnids. If you’re battling termites, fumigate only affected zones.

· Before attacking a piece of the natural world that falls within a residential zone, think about whether it really needs to be done, what will truly be affected, and if there is any other viable solution besides killing the visitors.

· Teach your dogs and cats not to attack the smaller animals that visit your abode.

· Take care not to contaminate your land with chemicals, oils or detergents.

· Plant seeds and trees that are eco-friendly – that is, plants that present a service to other species. To the squirrels this could be coconut palms, almond and cashew trees. For XLI�LYQQMRKFMVHW�ERH�FYXXIV¾MIW��TPERX�QER]�¾S[IVW��%W�JSV�XLI�FMVHW��XLI]�PSZI�JVYMX�ERH�WIIHW��,IPMGSRMEW�EW�E�TPEGI�JSV�FYXXIV¾MIW�to lay their eggs or Guava and Copperwood trees for feeding the monkeys.

Dado que los camarones suelen enterrarse en el fondo marino, la creativa industria inventó algo así como unas gigantescas retroexcavadoras con las que van peinando el lecho oceánico, logrando que los camarones salgan de sus escondites y entren en las kilométricas mallas que siguen a las grandes paletas de excavación.

¡5YI�LE]�HI�QEPS�GSR�IWXE�XqGRMGE# Muy simple: El fondo marino no está habitado solo por camarones sino también por una inmensa lista de otras especies. Los bancos de barro y arena no son un terreno inerte, sino que ocultan intrincadas redes biológicas.Además junto con afectar la ecología de los fondos marinos, la pesca por arrastre también va arrasando con la cobertura viva y la estructura de las zonas rocosas y coralinas, epicentros de la salud oceánica.

Pero no se trata tan solo de la destrucción ambiental, sino de una alta MRI½GMIRGME�UYI�IR�TPIRS�WMKPS�<<-�MVVMXE�XVIQIRHEQIRXI��*uNIWI�UYI�para lograr la captura de un kilo de camarones, esta industria necesita capturar y matar siete kilos y medio de otras formas de vida, la gran mayoría sin utilidad alimentaria o comercial. Son simplemente arrojados muertos de vuelta al mar.Incluso la realidad es mucho peor, TYIW�IWE�IWXEHuWXMGE�S½GMEP�WI�VI½IVI�E�YR�OMPS�HI�GEQEVSRIW�enteros. Ya que de ese kilo, solo saldrán unos 400 gramos de colitas comestibles, lo correcto es decir que por cada kilo de rabos comestibles, es necesario asesinar y desechar 18,75 kilos de otras especies.

Given that the shrimp are usually buried at the bottom of the SGIER�¾SSV��XLI�GVIEXMZI�WLVMQTMRK�MRHYWXV]�LEW�MRZIRXIH�WSQIXLMRK�similar to giant bulldozers to comb the bottom of the ocean. These metal structures goes stirring the marine bottom to pluck shrimp from their hiding places, and then guide them to huge nets.

Why is this technique so bad?-X W�ZIV]�WMQTPI��XLI�FSXXSQ�SJ�XLI�QEVMRI�¾SSV�MW�RSX�MRLEFMXIH�only by shrimp, but also by an immense list of other species. The sandbanks and mud banks are not just inert terrain; they also hide intricacies and massive interconnected biological networks. Besides vastly disturbing the ecosystem of the marine bottom,

XVE[PMRK�XLI�SGIER�¾SSV�W[IITW�E[E]�the living protection of rocky and coral areas – epicenters of the health of the ocean.

However, it would be shortsighted to think of this only as an extreme example of environmental destruction. This is a prime example of extreme MRIJ½GMIRG] in the 21th century, in an age of extraordinary technology! Imagine – with the current processes, in order for the shrimpers to capture 1 pound of shrimp, they must capture and kill 7.5 pounds of other forms of wildlife, the great majority that offer no inherent commercial or nutritional value. Post-capture, they are simply dumped back into the sea to die.

Volviendo a la analogía del bosque, sería como ir a recolectar hormigas y en el proceso verse forzado a ir matando venados, pizotes, monos, aves, etc. Sería una vergüenza que nadie en su sano juicio querría defender, pero como esto pasa bajo el mar…ojos que no ven …camarón que no importa.Aunque esta técnica es permitida y usada en todo el mundo, en Costa Rica está tomando mucha fuerza la posibilidad de cambiar las cosas.El gobierno ha decidido dejar de evadir el problema y empezar a debatir este y otros riesgos que enfrentan nuestros océanos.La presidenta Chinchilla se ha reunido seriamente con voceros ambientalistas y ha partir de ahí, ha dado vida a una comisión que ha reestudiando la situación actual de la explotación marina en el país, incluyendo el análisis de las actuales leyes y su aplicación real. También se ordenó una revisión profunda de las instituciones relativas al manejo oceánico, en particular de Incopesca (Instit. Costarricense de Pesca y Acuicultura), principal ente regulador que desde hace años ha sido acusada por los ambientalistas (y más recientemente hasta por el propio gobierno), de una total perdida de objetividad e inoperancia. Por otro lado, un inmenso movimiento ciudadano está pidiendo y presionando por estos cambios.El ‘Frente por Nuestros Mares’ es una agrupación recientemente creada por la alianza de las 10 ONG pro-mar más grandes del país y por miles de voluntarios, en un esfuerzo de coordinación gigantesco e insólito, que denota el amplio consenso que existe en el tema.

Los primeros frutos de la comisión han llegado. La Presidente Chinchilla ha anunciado la creación del Viceministerio del Mar, que será el nuevo ente rector de las actividades marinas. También ordenó una reforma a la junta directiva de Incopesca para representar mejor los intereses públicos, a la vez que instruyó el desarrollo de una nueva Ley para el manejo de los recursos marinos.

No vamos a discutir que los camarones son un manjar para el paladar. ¡Claro está que son deliciosos!

Yes, they are certainly delicious and we aren’t going to doubt your right to buy them.

But you can help by reducing your consumption and generally doing a more responsible buying process of marine products. Get informed about products, sizes and closed seasons. Can you make this little effort so your grandchild can also enjoy the fruits of the ocean in the future?
