Isaiah 9:6-7

What a wonderful passage this is from the book of Isaiah, especially as we look towards Christmas and all the rush and stress that it contains.

It is important to lift our eyes above the tinsel and the trees, and take time to be reminded of the incredible Christmas story that is all about Jesus. Jesus was the Child that was born, the Son that was given and the Messiah that mankind was waiting for.

The birth of Jesus in the back blocks of the Middle East was the fulfilment of the promises that God gave to his people.

The birth of Jesus brought hope and peace and life. This is a message that our world needs to remember, as we as a society increasingly sideline faith and Christianity from the centre stage to the dressing room.

I pray that this Christmas you might have an opportunity to reflect on Jesus’ birth and its significance for you, your family and our community. May you have a wonderful opportunity to rest and enjoy time with family and friends over this special time in our calendar.

These last few weeks at school are a flurry of activity as we conclude the year by celebrating and acknowledging the wonderful achievements of our exceptional students and celebrate the birth of Jesus as a community. I do hope you are able to attend and participate in as many of these events as you are able.

We are currently finalising our staffing for next year and are excited by the quality and calibre of our new staff who we will introduce in the New Year. I am sure they will love being at St Paul’s. It is hard to believe that we have only a week of school left. The staff are very busy in preparation for our end of year celebrations including the Christmas Chapel, Secondary School Awards Ceremony and Presentation Evening.

The past two weeks have been another busy fortnight at St Paul’s, with our Year 10 students at work experience and then enjoying the Year 10 Formal. We also welcomed Year 7, 2018 to our school for a two-day orientation and their parents for a parent information night. We have held Year 11 Orientation this week, and last Friday we held our Annual White Ribbon themed Principal’s Assembly where Academic and Co-curricular Awards were presented. Last night our Cadet Rural Fire Brigade held their annual dinner and awards night. It certainly is a busy time of year!

Arrangements for Secondary School Awards Ceremony & Presentation Evening – 7th December

The Secondary School Awards Ceremony will be held in The Centre from 9:00am on Thursday, 7 December. It is anticipated that this will take approximately 90 minutes. All Secondary School students from Years 7 to 11 are required to attend this event. Parents and family are most welcome to join us as we celebrate the past year. Parents of those students receiving major awards have been notified by email. There is a small change to the awarding of certificates this year. Only the major awards, which include the Gold Certificates and Meritorious Achievement, will be announced for students to process across the stage. Blue and Green Certificates will be

included in the students’ academic report package which will be available after Presentation Evening.

Please ensure your child's uniform is neat and tidy, shoes are polished and girl’s hair is tied up in the school ribbon. Blazers are required for all students for this event.

Secondary School students are permitted to go home after the ceremony. If you are taking your child home, please sign them out at the conclusion of the ceremony. Supervision will be provided for students who remain at school, for the rest of the day.

If you have children in the Junior School, you are welcome to stay for a light morning tea in The Centre Foyer between the Secondary and Junior School ceremonies. If you have Secondary students who are staying to see a younger

sibling in the Junior School Awards Ceremony commencing at 11:30am, please sign them out prior to the Junior School Ceremony commencing.

The term will conclude with Presentation Evening, held in The Centre. Please plan to arrive for a prompt 7:30pm start. All students from Years 5 to 11 are required to attend and wear full summer school uniform, including blazer. Student parking attendants will assist in directing visitors to park their cars in various locations on the school grounds.

All Year 12 students are invited to attend the evening as our guests. However, attendance is not compulsory. Year 12 students who wish to attend should wear smart casual attire, not school uniform. Year 12 students receiving awards on the night have been notified by email.

From the Head of the Secondary School

From the Head of the Secondary School

White Ribbon themed Principal’s AssemblyLast Friday St Paul’s held our annual White Ribbon Assembly. St Paul’s is proudly a White Ribbon School. As a school committed to the wellbeing and positive development of our students, the White Ribbon Campaign is an initiative for social change that works toward an end to all forms of violence directed toward women. By involving men and women across the community, the campaign strives to activate positive change, through education and prevention. It dentifies men and boys as

being core facilitators to the successful realisation of a world free from violence and abuse against women. The Assembly’s guest speaker was Emma Husar MP, the Federal Member for Lindsay and her keynote address to staff, families and students at the assembly was thought provoking and informative. The Middle School Prefects sold cupcakes at recess in both the Junior and Secondary schools after the assembly. The cupcakes were made by the Year 11 Hospitality class. All proceeds went to The Haven (Nepean Women’s Shelter): https://www.facebook.com/thehavennepeanwomensshelter/ The Haven is community funded shelter providing crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence in the Nepean region. Once opened, The Haven will provide up to 3

months crisis accommodation for up to 6 women and their children who are at risk of homelessness or are experiencing domestic violence. During their stay, they will provide support and services to enable these women and children to live a life free of violence and move into transitional housing. The annual running cost of The Haven is budgeted to be $400,000. In a period of just one month this year, in excess of 50 women and up to 90 children were turned away from the one existing shelter in the Nepean region due to a lack of beds. Thank you for your support of the fundraiser.

Last Thursday morning, the Senior Captains sold White Ribbons at Penrith Railway Station to the morning commuters. We are delighted with the fundraising effort we have made to support the White Ribbon cause.

Blue + Green Threads – Uniform Shop

The Uniform Shop will be closed from 5 to 7 December for stocktake. For your convenience, the Uniform Shop will operate for additional days of trade on 22, 23 and 24 January 2018 from 9:00am to 4:00pm to assist families with uniform purchases. Regular hours of 8:00am to 4:00pm Tuesday to Thursday will resume from 30 January.

Information concerning school uniform, including price lists, can be found on my.stpauls (Parent Services - Secondary School - Parent Information - Uniform).

Thank you to all students who always comply with our uniform code. Parents are reminded that it is the school’s expectation that all students return from the summer holiday compliant with all school uniform requirements, including grooming standards; specifically, I refer to hair colour, haircuts, facial hair and piercings.

Start Dates for 2018 Students in Years 1 to 12 return to school on Monday, 29 January. Please note that Secondary School bell times will be changing in 2018. A decision has been made to move Secondary School bell times five minutes earlier to avoid the need for any Secondary School students to leave classes to catch the early bus in the afternoon and to standardise bell times across the day, maximising classroom learning. Junior School bell times remain unchanged. The new bell times can be viewed on my.stpauls under Parent Services.

I will send more detailed information about the commencement of the new school year during the summer break. I look forward to seeing you at our end of year events.

I extend to all members of our school community my very best wishes for a peaceful Christmas and a refreshing and safe holiday, and look forward to your return next year.

Christmas MessageAnd there were shepherds living

out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.

An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them,

and they were terrified. But the angel said to them,

"Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.

Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you;

he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you:

You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."

Luke 2:8-12

Of all the Bible passages about Christ's birth, this would be one of my favourites.

I love the picture of everyday people doing everyday things (shepherds minding their sheep) being the audience for the angel's message. A good reminder that the good news that the Messiah has been born was not just for the rich and famous but for everyone. Did you note that the good news that the angels talk about will cause great joy for all the people. 'Great joy' because this Messiah that the angels were talking about would be the one who would grow up and eventually die on a cross so that we could be friends with God. There is no other better news - that we can be friends with God because of Jesus - now that's worth celebrating!

St Paul's Conservatorium Concert. Last Wednesday, I had the pleasure of attending the St Paul's Conservatorium concert. It was a wonderful night of music, speech and drama with performances from students across all ages of the school. Our Junior School students also featured and were very entertaining. Congratulations to Geoffrey Norris, Sarah Hogan, Patrick Dwyer, Arabella Logan and Lachlan Meissner for their participation.

Student News Arabella Logan recently competed her DELF A 1 French language exam achieving 88%. A fantastic result! Geoffrey Norris recently achieved a High Distinction in his Speech and Drama exams. A spectacular achievement. Finally, I would like to thank all our students and families for a wonderful year. I would like to wish you all a safe and wonderful Christmas celebrating Christ's birth and for a great time of rest and relaxation over the holidays. I look forward to seeing you all in 2018. Term 1, 2018 commences on Monday, 29 January 2018.

A School of Academic Excellence! At the most recent Principal’s Assembly I commented to students that St Paul’s has the strongest academic record of any non-selective school in the Western Sydney and its students achieve higher results in final external examinations than most other schools in the state. Before the main university round of offers are made on December 21, more than half of St Paul’s Year 12 graduates have already been offered places at Universities, including two students who have been invited to be interviewed for places at Cambridge University! We wish them the very best for their interview. It is a phenomenal achievement to receive this invitation and a comment on the quality of teaching and student achievement at St Paul’s. As I look at student achievement academically, I am struck by the fact that in general, students who achieve well academically almost always have a number of co-curricular activities that balance their academic studies. It is important that students and families are aware that this balance is vital in life and has many positive outcomes in health, wellbeing and achievement.

HSC results will be released to students online and by text message on December 14 and ATARs (Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranks) on 15 December. IB Diploma students will receive their results through the school by email on January 4. Their ATAR equivalent score is generated by conversion of their IB result. See here for the current conversion.

As mentioned in the last Revelations, main round offer of places will be made a week after HSC results are released. This is a major change from the past where the main round was made in mid-January. There will still be January offers. In a major change from the past IB Diploma students are this year being made December offers by Macquarie and Sydney Universities based on school predicted grades of student performance. This was covered in a Sydney Morning Herald article featuring St Paul’s student Madeleine Bishop! All UAC dates are linked here.

Given that this is the last Revelations for the year, I encourage students to have a break from study, to rest and relax and enjoy the true message of the Christmas break, that Christ was born and died to rescue all from sin. I trust that this chance to have a break and reflect will recharge students so that they are able to return to school refreshed and ready for learning in the New Year.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about any of these matters.

The Secondary School musical is progressing well in preparation for its performance in June 2018.

The auditions took place late Term 2 and the rehearsals have been taking place since the beginning of Term 3. Every Tuesday afternoon the students that constitute the main characters, chorus, and musicians work hard and diligently to learn their lines, choreography, and songs to make the show spectacular. Watching the rehearsals, we can say doubtlessly that their hours of practice are paying off.

Just one of the many great benefits (and sometimes difficulties) of putting on a musical performance is the amount of people with different talents required to put it all together. Some of our brilliant and dedicated teachers have already been hard at work helping our school’s dancers, singers, actors, and

musicians put to practice their gifts in the rehearsal process so far. Next year, there will be even more exciting opportunities to be involved in the musical. Hair and makeup artists, costuming, backstage crew, and lighting, are just a few of the roles that will be needed to fill in the weeks approaching the performance.

The Musical was intended for nurturing and utilising the abundance of performing talents among the students of St Paul’s. We can confidently say that so far, it has been achieving this goal and we are certain it will continue to do so. It is looking to be a remarkable performance that we, and we are sure many others, cannot wait to see.

Revelations - St Paul’s Fortnightly Newsletter. Issue No. 15 12

This year at St Paul’s we have welcomed a number of exchange students. As a Christian school, it is wonderful to be able to do this as the Bible encourages us to welcome strangers and treat them as one of us (Leviticus 19:34).

In the first semester we welcomed Gigi Joergensen from Denmark, who stayed with the Boughey family. She was buddied with Christie Wotherspoon of Year 11 and she became completely involved in school activities. She was part of the String Ensemble, she had a considerable speaking part in the Year 11 HSC Drama production and she participated in the Debutant Ball.

This semester has been a very busy introduction for our Captain of International Relations, Indiah Baker, as we welcomed a number of exchange students. At the start of Term 3, we welcomed Idris Lazreg from France (Paris), who was visiting us for only a short stay of 2 weeks. This was a return visit for Idris who had come as an exchange student 2 years ago and stayed with the Stewart family for a term. He enjoyed his time so much with the Stewarts and St Paul’s that he chose to spend part of his summer break revisiting us and catching up with old friends. He participated in class activities and excursions and was particularly helpful in offering a French perspective in all lessons. Idris headed back to France in order to start his final year of the French baccalaureate.

We also welcomed two French students - Perrine Beguet from Beauvais and Lou Dessenon from Besançon. Perrine stayed with the Bonazza family and her buddy was Sophie Brooker in Year 10. Lou stayed with Tara Slowey from year 10. Both of these students participated in all classes and excursions and they thoroughly enjoyed their time in Australia, developing their English language skills and helping St Paul’s students to develop their French language skills. Perrine left us at the end of Term 3, and Lou returned home at the end of Week 2,

Term 4, when, after a short time back home, Tara was to join her for the remainder of this year and the start of next year. Tara is looking forward to developing her French language skills, which will be of great benefit as she takes up French ab initio for the IB Diploma in Year 11.

Not only did we host students from France, but we also welcomed Tiziana Kropp from Germany. She stayed with the Spiegel family and attended classes in Year 9 with Olivia McCombe. Tiziana’s English skills are of a very high standard and she also speaks Chinese, so she attended Chinese classes and engaged well with our international students. Tiziana also headed home at the end of Term 3.Grace Asoera, from Essex in the United States of America, has been with us since the start of Term 3. She is staying with the Cancellier family and has been attending classes with Indiah Baker in Year 11. Grace will be able to experience a very different Christmas this year, as she is not heading home until January 6, 2018.

It has been a delight to welcome all of these students. Each of them has been willing to wear our school uniform and participate in classes and cocurricular activities. The exchange students have enriched our knowledge and understanding of other cultures and languages and we trust that they have learnt much and benefitted from their time here at St Paul’s and with their host families.

Tara Slowey is not the only student heading overseas on exchange; we are also saying a brief goodbye to Sophia Walsh from Year 10, who will spend time in Arras, France over the Christmas period. Alyssa McCulloch from Year 11, will also be spending Christmas away from home on exchange in Chengdu, China. We wish them all a wonderful time immersing themselves in the culture and language of their chosen countries.
