REFINISH RETROSPECTIVETHEN AND NOWA DuPont Customer Since ’51 – At Least

Louisville, Ky. It’sasafebetthatmostpeoplereadingthisarticlewerenotalivein1951.Afterall,itwasalongtimeago.HarryTrumanwasintheWhiteHouse,theDodgerswereinBrooklyn,theGiantsinNewYork,andtelevisionwasblackandwhite. Howtimeshavechanged. They’vechangedalotatA.L.HansenPaintandMetalShopInc.inLouisville,Ky.Foronething,thereisnolongeraHansen in thebusiness.But thereareplentyofBrangersworkingattheblock-longshop.JamesB.Brangersboughtthebusinessin1956.Hisson,JamesJ.Sr.,tookoverthebusiness

in 1977. He continues tomanage the shop today,alongsidehiswife,Marcella,whoisvicepresident,hisson,JamesJ.Jr.,whomanagesthepaint shop, and a daughter,WandaBrangersPeace,whois office manager.Whilemuchhaschanged,onethingremainsconstant:A.L.HansenPaintandMetalCo. continues to use onlyDuPont Refinish products to

paintthetrucksandcarsthatpassthroughtheshop.Backin1951,whenHansenPaintandMetalwasfeaturedinRefinisher News, thepaintofchoicewasDulux.Today,it’s Imron 5000 polyurethane enamel, ChromaBase, and,more recently, ImronElite.Thepainters favor7900Sand3480Sclearcoats. The five painters and two body men turn out 40-70 jobs a month. Most are commercial vehicles, including a fairnumberofbuses. Jim Jr., who does his share of painting, favors Imron.

“There’snothingelse like it,”he says. “You walk aroundthe jobone timeandyou’redone.Andthecolormatchesareverygood.” AstowhytheshophasstayedwithDuPontproductsalltheseyears,heoffersthis:

“Ithinkit’sbecausewehaveacomfortzonewiththem.Weknowthemwell,andweknowtheywork.” “Alotofcompetitorshavecomeinheretryingtoswitchus,”headds,“butthat’sjustnotgoingtohappen.”l

There are no longer any Hansens working at A. L. Hansen Paint and Metal Shop, but there are plenty of Brangers. James J. Brangers (top left) took over the business from his father in 1977. He continues to manage the shop today, alongside his wife, Marcella, who is vice president. James J. Jr. (bottom left) manages the paint shop, and a daughter, Wanda Brangers Peace, is office manager. One thing hasn’t changed: the shop’s painters are still spraying nothing but DuPont Refinish products. Hansen's was featured in Refinisher News way back in 1951 (below).

Mostexpertsagreethatthemostimportantstepinmatchingacoloristhesprayout.In fact, many painters wouldn’t think of applying a clearcoat before doing a sprayoutcomparisonofthecolor. Surprisingly, there are a lot of shops that don’t do these test panels except in rareinstances.Thinkingtheyaresavingtimebynotdoingan“extra”step,somepainterswillattemptto“eyeball”theiradjustmentsbycomparingwetbasecoatfromamixingstickorevenasmudgeonpaper. HeandtheotherpaintersatChernerwereencouragedto do sprayouts by Jamie Young, the DuPont Refinish brand specialist.Jamiesuggestedthattheydothesprayoutcardatthetimeofcut-inonparts. “Iftherearenoparts,Randywillputthecardonthemasking paper next to the repair and apply base coat ashe does the car,” explains Jamie. “Once full coverage isachieved, he removes the card and clears just the card tocheckformatch–withcolorcorrectedlighting.Thethingpaintersdon'tlikeistostopandmakeasprayoutcardallbyitself.Withthisprocedure,theydon’tdothat.”RandyhasbeendoingsprayoutsforeachjobeversincehearrivedatChernerabouttwoyearsago.Hekeepsthepanelsina three-ringbinder.When thesamecolorcomesuponanotherjob,hesimplyreferstohisbinder,whichcontainsmorethan800cards,byhisestimate. With a sprayout, Cherner painters don’t have to mixthe different variants and put them next to the car to tellwhatmatches.Theysimplyusetheexistingpanelandmatchit to the car they’re repairing. Each panel is marked withthe formula, along with other pertinent information, suchas color code, color name, lightness, saturation, hue, airpressure at the gun, solvent used, viscosity reading, tintsused,etc. “IuseVINdicator™(DuPont’sformularetrievalsystemthatutilizestheVINtoselectthebestbasecoatformula)oneveryjob,butIalwaysdoasprayout,”saysRandy.“AndIliketogooutsidetodothematches.”Expertsagreethatnaturaldaylightisbestfordeterminingcolor match because it reflects all of the available visible wavelengths. Also, the work should be viewed from allpossibleangles.Thesidetoneisoftenverydifferentfromthehead-on appearance. In the instanceswhere it doesn’tmatch,thepainterscandialitinwithabitoftinting. DaimlerChryslerhasre-signedaglobalcooperationagreement for the use of DuPont Refinish products. The agreement was signed at the DaimlerChrysler GlobalParts and Services offices in Stuttgart, Germany. The agreement renews a previous five-year program. DaimlerChrysler will receive full support from DuPontduring2006-2007,whentheEuropeanUnionwillintroducenew environmental regulations for vehicle refinishing requiringallEUshopstotransitiontowaterbornepaints.DPC introduced its first waterborne refinishing products in1994. With the help of DuPont Refinish, all DaimlerChrysler accident repair centers and the majority of theirapproved body shops now comply with the most recentenvironmental regulations.
