  • FROM THE PASTOR: Guided By A Star

Every manger scene boasts the three Wise Kings (Magi, Astrologers) with camels laden with gifts.

Matthew uses his Infancy Narrative to introduce the central themes of his

gospel. In today’s gospel, he is affirming that Jesus is the revelation of God not just for the Jewish people, but for the whole human race. The word “epiphany” means “manifestation.” Jesus is manifested as the king and savior of the world.

The encounter of the kings with Herod underlines another. This child, this New King, this Savior would disturb the assumed order of things, the status quo. And people who benefit from things staying the way they are feel threatened and push back. That would not just include the power brokers of the world, but also you and me.

How do we react when Jesus challenges us to change and embrace His will over our own? We all have our stories of resistance and dismissal as well as humble acceptance. On our journey of faith, we have learned that, what at first glance is His disturbing interference in our lives, turns out to be the invitation to experience His love anew and to live in His freedom.

Who Were The Magi? The Magi were “wise men,” Gentile seers who combined astronomy and astrology to divine religious insights from the skies. Naturally the star attracts them and leads them to find its meaning. But for them to really find out who Jesus is,

they must first learn from the Jewish scripture - the Messiah will be born in Bethlehem. The Magi symbolize several things: the need for revelation to inform natural knowledge; the Gentiles’ willingness to accept Jesus as the Messiah; and the pilgrimages of religious seekers who set out on long, risky, and uncertain journeys to find the source of their faith. Prepare the Word

The Meaning of the Three Gifts. The verses of “We Three Kings” explain what the gifts symbolize:

Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain, GOLD I bring to crown Him again; King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign.

FRANKINCENSE to offer have I; Incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising, gladly

    raising, worshipping God on high.

MYRRH is mine: it’s bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone-cold tomb.

In Summary Gold, because Christ is King of kings.

Frankincense, because He is God. Myrrh, oil for anointing a dead body,

because Christ died for our salvation.

New Year Resolutions Diet; Start Exercising; Get Organized; Read a book a week; Begin a new hobby…..etc.,etc.,etc. Good stuff. All worthwhile.

Here is also one worth considering: Give God fifteen minutes a day in prayer.

    1 January 3, 2021

THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD JANUARY 3, 2021

    T H O U G H T S O N G I V I N G :

“..they fell down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh...” (Matthew 2:11 )

Notice the order of events in the Magi’s visit. First, they knelt before Jesus and prayed to Him. Then they presented Him with their gifts. We, too, must take time to pray before we present our gifts to the Lord. We never know what God may be asking us to share!

HOME BLESSING KITS - Are you looking for a meaningful Christmas “Family” tradition? Why not bless your home for the New Year? This ancient

tradition can occur anytime during the Christmas Season beginning with Christmas day and ending on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (January 10). Epiphany Sunday/the Feast of the Magi (January 3) is the most popular time to do this ritual but any other day is appropriate. As a service to the parish, Confirmation candidates made Home Blessing Kits complete with instructions and a brief prayer service for any family to follow. These kits are available by calling the parish office. May God bless your family this holiday and throughout the coming year! OFFERTORY ENVELOPES - Our money counters would like to request that parishioners NOT use staples, glue or scotch tape on your offertory envelopes. Also, please mark all envelopes correctly. This will ensure proper posting. Thank you for your cooperation.

Catholic Charities provides virtual counseling to help address those issues and more. Taking care of your own emotional well-being is very important to you and the people you love.
