Retro Living Room Design Trends

Retro inspired living areas and interiors have come back quite a bit over the past year or so.  But, one of the great things about this type of interior design is that you can choose whether you want to include colors like rust orange, purple or violet, or whether you want to go all out and include pieces of furniture and use accents as a way to bring the retro into your home.  In other words, you don't have to go all out in order for your decor to be considered retro; you can just use certain aspects of this style to bring it into your home.  If you want some cool ideas on how to go about this, continue to read below for some information. If you are looking for additional help in choosing a chic design you can always contact an interior painter in Essex County for help. House painters in Essex County NJ are skilled at making each room in your home as unique as you.

Low Down Funky

If you loved the 70s, you are probably going to like this.  In this example, it’s a studio in New York; the walls are brick rather than plaster and painted white, while the metal window frames are black.  The flooring is wood, but you can use any instance of materials in this example and still come up with a great design.  The floor has two different sections.  The first section includes a large rectangular throw rug; the back color is a creamy white while the fore color is chocolate brown in a pattern.  On this rug are two blue velvet chairs, one small circle table and a nice L shaped couch in creamy white as well.  On the accent wall of this space is a white long table pushed up against the brick and on that table are little Knick knacks, keeping with the creamy, tan and blue color scheme here.

The back wall is then accented with different funky prints also incorporating more than just the colors listed here, but some other colors to help break up the monotony and bring

some other colors into the room.  The couch is decorated with different throw pillows - some with fringe, some without, all have that sort of same color scheme; white, creamy white, blue, green and chocolate brown, all the pillows are also in funky patterns, none of them are in solids.  The second space in this room features a nice tiger shaped rug, also with the same colors as the aforementioned rug and on it is a retro lounge chair in gold and white, beside that is a small table and behind that a lamp for extra lighting.  This is a really good option for lofts because it works well with a really small space, but still gives you that punch of style and color that you crave.

Diner Style Dining Room

If you have a certain love for diners and you also have an open floor plan where the

kitchen, dining room, and living room are all or about all one space, this one might be the style you've been looking for.  This is really cool because these are actual diner

seats which are custom made, but instead of the usual red booths and chairs, these are royal blue.  On the far

side of the room are big windows, and up against those windows is the L-shaped booth in royal blue.  The table also has

that diner look with a blue and white speckled top and the chrome lining on the outside of the table.  The chairs are also chrome and royal blue.  On the ceiling for some extra added light, the homeowners found a way to incorporate a really cool light fixture with different glass matte shades in different colors.  You can actually go to a glass maker or glass blower to have these custom made, though.  On the far right side of the dining room, there is a breakfast bar with a black granite countertop and bar stools that are also keeping with the diner style - chrome and royal blue.  This example just goes to prove that your entire house or the entire space doesn't have to be retro; you can just bring in pieces that you like and set them up.  The reason is ay this is because the homeowner has the rest of space - the kitchen and the living room pretty modern with a dash of rustic.  So even if you don't want to change the entire space, there are options available to you to change SOME parts of the space, but not the entire space.

Retro Chic Glam

That's probably three words you never thought you would see together but give this a chance because it all comes together pretty nicely.  This is an LA loft; so again, the space is smaller in size.  The room has regular carpet, but in this example, they bought a shag rug in creamy white to place on the floor, it’s pretty small, about 6x6 in size, but it does what it needs to do which is added another layer of color and texture.  On top of this rug is a blaring bright orange circle chair that is being used as a table by way of wooden trays.  On the forefront of the room, there is a very busy patterned chair, at first glance it

looks out of place, but if you look at the entire room, it fits.  Behind that chair is an old record player.  On the other side of the room is an L-shaped chocolate brown fabric couch adorned with a variety of different throw pillows in different shapes, sizes, and colors as well as one that almost certainly matches the busy patterned chair on the other side of the room.  Behind the sofa are retro styled pictures, both colored and black and whites, which each one has one thing in common; a creamy white matte and a black frame.  Altogether, this is a really nice look, but it’s also different from the options above.

Hopefully, this lets you see that you won’t need to go all Brady Bunch.  You can go full bore, if that's what you choose to do, or if you want to be able to change it easily in a month or a year or you have a low budget, you can still create a warm and inviting space that screams retro.
