Xinhua CHINA supports the U.N. Secu- rity Council in taking necessary measures regarding the DPRK’s nuclear test, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said yesterday morning. Citing threats to not only Northeast Asia but the whole world, the U.N. Security Coun- cil on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution to impose fresh sanctions on the DPRK over its nuclear test Sept. 3 for violation of previous Security Council resolutions. The new sanctions severely restrict oil imports and ban all its textile exports worth US$800 million and remittances of some 93,000 DPRK laborers from abroad. Geng said the resolution reflected the unanimous stance of Security Council members in safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, advancing denuclear- ization on the Korean Peninsula and upholding international nonproliferation. He said the resolution called for a peaceful settlement through diplomatic and political means, supported the resumption of six-party talks and stressed measures to de-escalate tension on the peninsula. “The Chinese side hopes that this resolution will be imple- mented comprehensively and completely,” the spokesperson said. As a neighbor of the Korean Peninsula, China has been closely following the development of the situation there, Geng said. He said that China’s unswerv- ing stance was for denuclear- izing the Korean Peninsula, maintaining peace and stability there and resolving problems through dialogue and consul- tation. The related parties should bear their responsibilities, take practical measures to ease ten- sion and resume dialogue and negotiation in order to solve the Korean Peninsula issue, Geng said. He called on the DPRK to abide by the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council and stop the development of nuclear missiles, and urged the United States and South Korea to avoid any actions that may further complicate the situation. The “dual-track approach” and the “suspension for sus- pension” initiative proposed by China, Geng said, are practical methods to solve the Korean Peninsula issue. “We called on the relevant par- ties to work with China to push for dialogue and negotiation and make joint efforts to realize peace and stability on the peninsula,” he said. Geng said China firmly opposes the deployment of the U.S. anti-missile Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea, which will severely harm the strategic security of China and other coun- tries in the region, and damage the trust and cooperation among related parties on the Korean Peninsula issue. CHINA supports the U.N. Secu-rity Council in taking necessary measures regarding the DPRK’s nuclear test, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said yesterday morning.

Citing threats to not only Northeast Asia but the whole world, the U.N. Security Coun-cil on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution to impose fresh sanctions on the DPRK over its nuclear test Sept. 3 for violation of previous Security Council resolutions.

The new sanctions severely restrict oil imports and ban all its textile exports worth US$800 million and remittances of some 93,000 DPRK laborers from abroad.

Geng said the resolution refl ected the unanimous stance

of Security Council members in safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, advancing denuclear-ization on the Korean Peninsula and upholding international nonproliferation.

He said the resolution called for a peaceful settlement through diplomatic and political means, supported the resumption of six-party talks and stressed measures to de-escalate tension on the peninsula.

“The Chinese side hopes that this resolution will be imple-mented comprehensively and completely,” the spokesperson said.

As a neighbor of the Korean Peninsula, China has been closely following the development of the situation there, Geng said.

He said that China’s unswerv-ing stance was for denuclear-izing the Korean Peninsula, maintaining peace and stability there and resolving problems through dialogue and consul-tation.

The related parties should bear their responsibilities, take practical measures to ease ten-sion and resume dialogue and negotiation in order to solve the Korean Peninsula issue, Geng said.

He called on the DPRK to abide by the resolutions of the U.N. Security Council and stop the development of nuclear missiles, and urged the United States and South Korea to avoid any actions that may further complicate the situation.

“We called on the relevant par-ties to work with China to push for dialogue and negotiation and make joint efforts to realize peace and stability on the peninsula,” he said.
