Technology.
The teaching methodology adopted was as follows:
The different aids of teaching used were power point presentations, site visits, model
making etc.
Architecture cannot be studied within the four walls of
studio and practical knowledge is must. Looking at this
arranged different site visits under various subjects like
Design, Construction, Building Services etc. as and
when required.
To see how different Architects handle designing of their projects, held workshops with
famous practicing architects in the Design studio.

BUILDING SERVICES INCHARGE
My subject of interest is Building Services and I am heading Building services department in the
Institute under the able guidance of Ar. Gurunath Modak. I am involved in the teaching of this
subject since last 15 years of my teaching career and have taken it further by doing research on
the related topics of Fire safety at post-graduate and doctoral level.
The policy for Building Services has been made with its identified Aim, Objectives and its need.
Policy for Building Services
Aim: To make the students aware of the importance, installation and working of essential
services in building and a way building services help in generating healthier and cleaner built
environment.
The need for a policy for building services was felt as:
Effective working of any building is possible only with proper and correctly designed
services in the building.
Precisely interpret appropriate application and performance of service system in single
and multistoried building.
The policy for services focuses on
Sequential introduction of complexity of services involved in buildings.
Assess, select and integrate a particular service with other services in building design and
site planning.
Preparation of technically precise drawings and draw outline specifications of the latest
techniques and materials used in services.
Objective:
To acquaint the students with all the services starting from basic building services to
complex ones like introduction of water supply and sanitation in single storey residence
to Fire safety, Air Conditioning and Building Automation in multistoried buildings.
To familiarize the students with IS codes related to services.
Thus, the policy ensures and emphasizes on the introduction of all the services in building step
by step as per its complexity and its integration in building design and its structural systems.
Strategies:
Contents of subject will be developed on the basis of the services policy of the institute.
Integrating basic principles of services with design studios to give it a practical aspect
under the supervision of services team.
ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT UNDER BUILDING SERVICES: SESSION 2017-18
i. INAUGURATION OF RAIN WATER HARVESTING PROJECT AND
UPLOADING BLOGS ON FACEBOOK PAGE- 5th Aug 2017
The semester started with a grand success of inaugural
function of uploading blogs on FB page and Rain water
Harvesting project by Mayor, Mrs. Nandatai Jichkar. Mrs.
Jichkar explained the importance of rain water harvesting to
the audience and the initiatives taken by NMC for the same
in her speech. Principal, Dr. Ujwala Chakradeo posted the
first blog on the Importance of Building Services. She also
highlighted the projects undertaken by the college. The
Department of building Services SMMCA, works with the aim to make the students aware of the
importance, installation and working of essential services in building and a way building services
help in generating healthier and cleaner built environment.
The program was followed by presentation by Mr. Shrivallabh Kothe of Sujalam consulatants on
rain water harvesting.
ii. RAIN WATER HARVESTING PROJECT
As a part of our policy and social responsibility, we try to provide some services to some
unprivileged school by adopting it. This time a proposal and implementation of rain water
harvesting is selected for a Government School. After having a theoretical lecture by Kothe sir
on RWH, students are now required to implement. Half the students have done the study for the
school and rest of them have done for the college. Students were divided in groups and they
carried out the water audit for both the sites. Calculations regarding the number of down take
pipes, terrace area, slope, location and size of recharge pit, transmission pipes, etc. has been
done. The project would be executed in the holidays and this activity would be carried out by
students right from digging, laying of pipes, jointing etc. This would give them a holistic idea of
plumbing and a sensitive approach towards Building Services.
iii. SITE VISIT- AASHIRWAD PIPES, BANGLORE- 17th Aug 2017.
The team of Department of Building services-SMMCA
visited the manufacturing plant of Aashirwad Pipes to
have a close look of the process and the latest trends in
the plumbing industry. The visit was very fruitful as we
gained knowledge of the raw materials and their
proportions for making pipes, their manufacturing
process (right from pouring the liquid, the moulding in controlled temperature, and the finished
product were seen in detail), recycling process, the jointing techniques, the testing of pipes and
other fittings. New techniques of jointing – Push-fit and Sol-fit were introduced. The working of
different traps was also studied. The RnD department of the industry is also very active they
continuously work upon the issues and new materials. Overall the visit was very productive and
fruitful.
iv. GUEST LECTURE ON SOLAR POWER- 31st Sept
2017
With the rapid progression of sustainability and green concept, it is the need of the hour that
significance of Solar power in architecture should be introduced at initial design levels. So, a
guest lecture by Mr. Vivek Bhore was organised for third years wherein he addressed today’s
demand of solar energy and how it can applied architecturally. Students are now well versed with
the designing and calculations part of it. Some of them attempted to provide designs
incorporating solar panels in their major design project.
v. REDEVELOPMENT OF SEWAGE LAYOUT FOR A SLUM
As a part of Silver Jubilee celebrations of outreaching the
society the Services department undertook a live project of
Redevelopment of Sanitary layout of an existing slum of
the city. The slum identified was Kachipura slum. The
objective of the exercise was to make the students
understand and identify the problems of the existing
sanitation of the layout. Students spent almost a day in the
slum and plotted the development and carried out surveys. They documented the existing
drainage lines, drainage outlets and other facilities. Rigorous discussions were done on possible
locations of septic tanks, inspection chambers, manholes, slopes, invert levels etc. Finally, the
students came up with a workable plan and a report is prepared for the same.
The proposals will be submitted to NMC for further action.
vi. EXPERT LECTURE IN OTHER INSTITUTES/ ORGANISATIONS
a. PLUMBERS’ TRAINING WORKSHOP
In architectural practice, it is observed that the
plumbing practices are totally dependent on the
plumber. There is a communication gap between the
plumber and the architect which affects the plumbing
services on any site very badly. Hence, an interactive
session was carried out to reach out maximum plumbers
all over the city and impart them the right plumbing practices. The services team discussed
certain issues and common mistakes that are usually done on site. All of them demonstrated the
right practices and a display of latest fittings was available. The discussion ended with a question
answer session. This program helped to bridge the gap between the plumbers and the architects
and changed their approach of working on site. This also helps the client to build a trust on the
architect and also entitles the architect to prepare detailed drawings.
b. GUEST LECTURE IN SDMCA
Series of guest lectures were delivered in Shri. Datta Meghe College of Architecture by
Prof. Pratima Dhoke. She was invited to talk on topics like Building Automation,
Communication Services and Security and Surveillance in buildings.
c. INTRODUCTION OF SERVICES TO I YEAR STUDENTS
The first years students were introduced to the basics of toilet layout in which the concept of
dry area wet area was explained to them .The locations of the fittings and fixtures with their
standard dimensions with types were explained to them. Various layouts were worked upon,
toilet drop in section, ventilation location, door opening etc. were taken into consideration. The
session was conducted as a part of integration of Design and Services and was carried out by Ar.
Priyanka Sambare.
vii. FIRE POLICY FOR LAD HOSTEL, SEMINARY HILLS
In addition to the regular class work we also worked upon Fire Policy for our Hostel. The
students did the audit of the hostel and marked down the risky areas on the plan. They listed
down various causes of fire in the campus and accordingly suggested the types of extinguishers
and materials required. They also calculated the evacuation time required for them from topmost
floor in case of emergency. By doing such activities they could generate the evacuation route and
other requirements like nearest staircase etc. in the existing plan and gave a proposal of Fire
Policy for the hostel.
viii. EVACUATION PLAN FOR SHRINIVAS PUBLIC SCHOOL
The Department of Building Services submitted an evacuation plan for the WES, Shrinivas
Public school as a part of Design Cell. The drawing includes all the facilities provided for Fire
safety and the circulation plan for evacuation in case of emergency. It also included the positions
and number of extinguishers, fire alarm, hooter, refuge areas and meeting points. The drawing
was prepared by Ar. Anuradha Bhute and Ar. Mrinmayee Tiwari under the guidance of Ar.
Gurunath Modak.
