I can not give an accurate answer to your question until I know more about how your OSs are arranged on your hard drive(s). However, if you installed 7 after XP and now want to remove XP then the MBR probably does not need any repair in order to boot to 7. If you just want to remove the XP choice from the boot menu, you can use "msconfig" to delete the XP entry, no MBR fix necessary. (Thanks to Snuffy for this tip!) Cheers! MBR - Restore Windows 7 Master Boot Record - Windows 7 Forums

I have got Windows 7 Ultimate and installed it on a new hard drive. After installation I partitioned the drive in Windows creating a 400GB, 100GB, 500GB. After this completed I also noticed a 100MB System Reserved section but just ignored it. Everything worked fine. Then I think I did wrong. I wanted to create a dual boot system to also have XP on my PC and tried installing it on the 100GB partition but during instal everything crashed and now I get "Error Loading Operating System" when booting up. I have tried to repair using the Windows 7 DVD but no luck and when I look at the drives in Command Prompt they show as follows: C: System Reserved D: Spare Partition E: Spare (my 2nd hard drive) F: Windows 7 Partition Have tried following the instructions on here and it said succesful but still will not boot. Anyone have any ideas? Cheers My System Specs 11-01-2009 iseeuu Quote: Originally Posted by Hammer100 Hi Wonder if you could help on a little problem I have. However, Windows 2000 and XP use NTLDR for their boot manager and Vista and Seven use Bootmgr. So by installing XP after installing 7 the Bootmgr has probably been overwritten breaking the boot path to 7. I would suggest you install XP first and then 7 because the 7 Bootmgr will include XP in the boot menu. Here is a link to some tutorials for dual booting: Dual Boot Installation with Windows 7 and XP If you are still having issues I can have this post moved to its own thread to get more help for you? Hi Robert Windows 7 2 posts Thanks for the reply. What I ended up doing for the moment was to buy a new hard drive to install Windows 7, is it possible to multi boot from two different drives or do the two OS need to be on the same physical drive? Thanks Dave My System Specs 11-02-2009 iseeuu Quote: Originally Posted by Hammer100 Hi Robert Thanks for the reply. Thanks Dave It is absolutely possible to dual boot from two or more hard drives; in fact it has some advantages. I highly recommend it to those who want to dual boot with Linux. For example, the Linux boot manager can be fully functional on its on hard drive and include your Windows OSs in its menu, while your Windows OSs can be managed with a Window's boot manager and include the Linux OS in its menu. You then control which boot manager you wish to use by using the bios to select the hard drive it will boot to. If a hard drive crashes you can still run the OSs on the good drive. When you are installing an OS, just unplug all other hard drives and only work with one at a time. Also, I like to set the current OS partition to C:, and give the other partitions different letters. That way the running OS is always drive C:. There are a few Window's utilities that help edit the Window's boot manager so you can add and remove OSs from its menu, if you need them. Later! Robert My System Specs 11-07-2009 fly790420 this way did not work on my case. i have a laptop installed windows 7 , it was okay. until today i saw a article about removing the 100MB of "system reserved" partition.......and yeah...i did removed it by using my Windows 7 installation dvd.. now my laptop wouldnt boot...it shows only operating systen not found" i tried the method above but at Step 3, mine did not show up any operating system..all blank so i just clicked next then at Step 9 it couldnt restore the bootsector code. it only shows "the system partition was not found: the requested system device cannot be found" and then everything remain the same, still cannot boot. i know i am stupid to remove the system reserved partiton.. but i really need help here, i have imporant data in the laptop so i dont want to format and reinstall... #9 #8

Recently I had been playing with Kubuntu on my Windows 7 machine. Dont get me wrong, Kubuntu and other Linux distributions are great. I wanted to remove it because I wasnt really using it anymore and I was getting sick of booting my machine and forgetting to change the GRUB option at start-up to boot into Windows 7. I know that the GRUB can be edited so that Windows 7 would boot first but I no-longer had the need for Kubuntu so I wanted to remove it all together including the GRUB. First of all I made a really dumb n00b error of booting into Windows 7 and deleting the partitions that Kubuntu occupied. Of course, the GRUB remained and my computer wouldnt even start. To get back to being able to boot again, I inserted my Kubuntu DVD and re-installed so the GRUB would work again. Now I thought, maybe EasyBCD would be able to remove the GRUB from within Windows 7 and then I could delete the Kubuntu partitions again. Unfortunately EasyBCD could not do this. My next plan was to boot from my Windows 7 DVD and use the option to fix start-up errors. This was not a good plan either. The GRUB remained but I now had a Windows Vista GUI start-up instead of the much more pretty Windows 7 one. I decided to do some research before making anymore stupid mistakes RTFM comes to mind. So I discovered that the first step to remove the GRUB (and Kubuntu or other disto of Linux) is to boot from your Windows 7 DVD, select your language and then to choose the repair option. At the repair option you should choose the command prompt and use the command: bootsect /nt60 C: Now restart your computer and Windows 7 should boot without entering the GRUB because this has been removed from your machine. If you have somehow got the old Windows Vista start-up GUI displaying on start-up, then you should wait for your computer to boot into Windows 7 and run the command prompt as an Administrator. To get the Windows 7 GUI start-up back, use the following command: bootrec /fixmbr Once youre happy that your computer is booting without the GRUB and directly into Windows 7 you can remove all traces of the Linux distribution going into Disk Management (Windows Key + R and type diskmgmt.msc). Simply delete the partitions and then expand the rest of the drive containing data to fill the empty space. The above is just a brief overview of what I did but if you have any questions or would like anything in more

lich_uk:8 November 2009 at 7:48 am Keep up the good work. I had the same problem (Vista animation on my Windows 7 Box) nothing to do with dual booting, but because I had a 'selective startup' in place before I installed Windows 7. Weeks later I spotted this when using the System Configuration tool to try to resolve a driver issue. When I set the system back to 'normal' boot it somehow restored the Vista animation. I had already tried various things with bootsect which didn't fix it, but I didn't know about bootrec. Thanks to your post I have now been able to restore my pretty Windows 7 animation. im curently having this trouble. installed ubuntu on a second partition alongside windows 7. it wouldnt boot at all. it just went straight to the windows boot screen (i have vista on a second drive. recently installed win7) so i got fed up with it and deleted the ubuntu partition. my machine gets stuck on a grub error when i try to boot. i tried boot from your Windows 7 DVD, select your language and then to choose the repair option. At the repair option you should choose the command prompt and use the command: bootsect /nt60 C: Now restart your computer and Windows 7 should boot without entering the GRUB because this has been removed from your machine. this didnt work. i can get windows to boot using something i found on the 'ultimate boot cd' but i cant seem to repair it so the pc boots straight into windows. berkeleydb:22 August 2010 at 4:37 pm Ive got a new wrinking on the Ubuntu removal problem. 1. Ubuntu 9.04 was installed on Windows XP machine(not by me). 2. Machine was subsequently upgraded to Windows7. 3. Now looking to start the Ubuntu removal process by locating the Ubuntu partition, I go to Windows Disk Management. There is only one partition(C:). The one or two unlabled partitions I would expect to see for Ubuntu are missing. So I cannot delete a partition that I cannot find. 4. I note that when the machine is booted, I get a startup window labled Windows Boot Manager, not the grub I get options for Windows7, Previous version of Windows, and Ubuntu. The Ubuntu option actually boots Ubuntu, so its still existing somewhere, even though I cant find the partition. The Previous Windows Version also takes me to Ubuntu, not to Windows XP. 5. Just for kicks, I go into Windows7 XP mode, and look for partitions. Since its a virtual HD in xp mode, I can only see the one partition. 6. I tried bcedit /enum to see if I could figure out where Windows7 is going when Ubuntu is booted. I get boot configuration data store could not be opened. Access is denied I realize this is a separate problem from the Ubuntu problem. I just havent looked it up yet. I realize that upgrading to Windows7 with Ubuntu already installed on XP was maybe not a good idea. Is there an alternative here other than reformatting and reinstalling Windows7 ? Log in to Reply

gravis86:27 August 2010 at 12:56 am Id like to add that if people have tried: bootsect /nt60 C: bootsect /nt60 C: /mbr bootrec /fixmbr and its still not working, try using a different drive letter. When you boot from the Windows 7 disc and click Repair, it will ask you which installation of windows to repair. Note the drive letter, as it may not be C In my case, the drive letter was G so i typed: bootsect /nt60 G: /mbr and my computer booted right up! Log in to Reply

teqnoqolor :15 September 2010 at 5:47 am Thank you so much!
