New Caledonian influenza particular background

• French territory located in the Pacific, 230 000 inhabitants

• Regularly confronted with the south hemisphere seasonal influenza epidemic (june-august)

• NC regularly confronted with the north hemisphere seasonal influenza epidemic (december-february)

• Many exchanges with Autralia and NZ

Health authorities strategie and evolution of the (H1N1) pandemia:

- Airport screening (thermal camera)

- Symptomatic travellers : isolation / laboratory investigation

- Exposed travellers : self health monitoring and illness reporting

May June July August

26 June :- First positive case (NZ traveller)- isolation + oseltamivir- prophylaxis for contact- cruise ship sreening !

13 July :- First community case in Noumea- isolation home/hotel + oseltamivir- opening Influenza treatment centre (2)-

- First school closure- ICU cases

- Absenteeism workplace (mother stay home to look after childs)- Stop school closure- Oseltamivir prescription:

• 45 imported : 28 Australia, 14 NZ, 1 Philippines, 1 Fidji, 1 de French Polynesia

• 10 cases related to imported (CLCI)

• 250 community cases (CL)

• 409 negatives with 24 A seasonnal flu (H3N2/H1N1)
