PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “You’re off to great places. Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.” Dr Seuss. Welcome Back……. Welcome to 2019 – another exciting year of learning at Valley View Public School. As the school year begins, I would like to wish you and your family a very happy new year. I hope the holiday break has provided you with an opportunity to relax and spend some quality time with your family and friends. The children looked wonderful in their school uniform, keen to start school and enjoyed catching up with their friends. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our new students and their families, in particular to our new Kindergarten students who will commence this week. Staffing News We are very happy to welcome the following staff members to the Valley View team. They are Mrs Susan Pratt, Mrs Susan Tomlinson and Mr Brad Keyes. Mrs Christine Paff and Ms Verra Sater join us from the Glenvale Satellite Class. Staff Professional Learning on 29 January On Tuesday, 29th January, staff participated in the following mandatory training – CPR and face-to-face anaphylaxis. Staff were also involved in curriculum planning and also participated in a Focus on Reading workshop. Parent Information Sessions The teachers are looking forward to meeting parents and carers at the parent information sessions to be held after school on Wednesday, 13th February (Week 3). These sessions are a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and receive information about learning requirements, teacher expectations and what is planned for the year ahead. The information for these sessions is further along in this newsletter. Tips to support your child… Students and parent can work together to make sure that the start to the new school year is smooth and without stress. Here are some tips to help set your child up for a great year. Wear their correct uniform each day (including the correct school hat). Have it ready the night before

school days. Be at school on time. Begin a good routine for regularly completing homework. Home from school – change clothes, snack, do

homework, play, read before bed. Pack healthy food for fruit break, recess and lunch. A water bottle is essential. Pack bags the night before school. Have plenty of sleep on school nights. We are all very busy, but at this time of year in particular, it is an opportunity to set some good routines at home (working together to establish these can work wonders). Spending quality time actively listening to your child/children builds self-esteem and confidence. Raising Children website has helpful tips on a range of parenting issues including the benefits of listening: http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/talking_and_listening.html/context/292 Swimming Carnival The annual Swimming Carnival will be held on Monday, 11th February at Woy Woy Swimming Pool, Peninsular Leisure Centre. The carnival is organised for all students in Year 3-6. All students are expected to attend, as it is a normal school day. Competent swimmers from Year 2 who turn 8 this year are invited to attend given that they can swim 50m freestyle non-stop. Thank you to Mrs Harpur and Mrs Wilson for their organisation of the day. We look forward to seeing you at the Swimming Carnival, next Monday. Are you details up to date? Have you moved or changed phone numbers? Please inform the front office of any changes so we can contact you if the need arises.

Yours in Education Mary Hunt

LIBRARY NEWS Welcome back to another exciting year in the Valley View Library. I hope the students have kept up with their reading in the holidays, as I am extremely excited for the wonderful literature and library learning ahead of us this year. Library borrowing for 2019 will resume for all students in Years 1 to 6 Week 3 (11th February). For our new Kindergarten students borrowing will resume Week 5 (25th February). I encourage all students to bring a Library bag if they wish to borrow, as it helps to protect our precious books. These can be as simple as a reusable green bag, pillow case or a specific book/ Library bag. We do have a “no bag, no borrow” rule in the Library, and I would greatly appreciate your help in providing your children with a bag. We will once again be running the Premiers Reading Challenge through the Valley View Public School Library. This Challenge begins on March 4th (Week 6), so please keep an eye out for more information on this wonderful challenge in future newsletters. Reading is such an important aspect of a student’s learning as we all know. It can be hard at times as parents to know where to begin and how. The following website contains useful activities, resources and information to help you with reading to your children https://www.learningpotential.gov.au/age-group/primary-school. There is also an amazing selection of books available at our Central Coast Library Branches including Premier’s Reading Challenge Books, and more information can be found at https://www.centralcoast.nsw.gov.au/libraries. “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” — Emilie Buchwald

SCHOOL OPAL CARD

Busways, the bus operator that provides our school bus services, has asked us to remind bus users that an

important requirement of School Opal is the need for students to Tap On and Tap Off when they travel when

they tapping on and off is used to determine demand for bus services. If students don’t Tap on and Tap off,

services may be cancelled or reduced due to the lack of recorded patronage.
