PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Face-to-face Return Update Yesterday the Department of Education sent out updated guidelines for schools. We have attached the information leaflet for parents to this newsletter which will provide you with current information regarding school activities. The major points are as follows: From June 15th adults are still to adhere to social distancing rules school drop off and pick ups to remain the same as they are currently no non-essential adults on-site hygiene measures are to remain the same school assemblies may take place but for no longer than 15 minutes choirs and performing arts activities may start again school photos can go ahead From Term 3 – inter-school events and competitions Scripture can resume P&C and parent/teacher meetings (with a preference for online meetings) If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact the school. We understand that COVID-19 has created a very different school experience for us all, but we’d like to focus on a real positive that has come from this. I would like to acknowledge the incredible growth in maturity and resilience displayed by our students as they enter the school each morning without their parents – it has been lovely to see this develop over the weeks! Stage 3 Camp Unfortunately, we have had to make the extremely tough decision to cancel this year’s Canberra excursion due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. It was planned for Term 3, however without knowing for certain that we would be able to go ahead, planning for this was difficult. We know this will be extremely disappointing to Stage 3 and we sincerely apologise. Mrs Stone and the Stage 3 teachers are looking into alternative plans as we know and understand how important this is to our students. We will update you as soon as we can. Year 6 Leaders Year 6 have unfortunately missed out on a great number of leadership opportunities due to COVID-19 restrictions this year. Mrs Suaning and I met with the leaders last week to discuss how we can move forward and provide them with positive ways in which they can fulfil their role. We have come up with the following ideas together: making weekly videos to update our community on Facebook, they will be helping with breakfast club that will run from the canteen from next week on Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays, looking after our lost property, handing out class awards to recipients in class and they will be starting up the ‘Return and Earn’ program (please see attached report by the school leaders). Our Year 6 Leaders are doing a wonderful job in trying circumstances and we would like to say a big thanks to them for taking their role so seriously, well done everyone! Reports Semester 1 reports will be sent home before the end of the term and will reflect student’s learning both at home and at school. It will be an abridged version and will not have the usual A-E scaling, as directed by the Department of Education.

Gate Closures A reminder that the school gates on the eastern driveway, will be closed from 8:30am, and Binya Avenue and Elizabeth Street gates will be locked from 9:30am and 2:15pm. Anyone arriving to school before 9:30am will need to use the pedestrian access gate at the main entry to school on Chamberlin Road. School Beautification This week the COLA and structured play area will undergo a transformation with games being adhered to the surface. These will give our students lots of bright, fun, learning activities to engage in during break times and will look fantastic. We look forward to showing you photos of them next week! Band Update Given the current easing of restrictions regarding performing arts providers, we are very happy to inform you that the school band tutorials will recommence at school this week as per the ‘normal’ timetable. School 40th Photo Next Tuesday, 23 June the school photographer will be on-site (as restrictions have eased in regards to this) to take a whole school photo for the school’s 40th birthday which is coming up in October. We are asking for all students to attend in full school uniform (Year 6 can wear their Year 6 shirts if they prefer). We are hoping to have the photograph taken after the morning bell so we are asking for everyone to arrive on time. Congratulations We would like to congratulate Mrs Harpur and her husband on the safe arrival of Lachlan Alexander Harpur who was born on the 5th of June. We can’t wait to meet him!

Have a great week, Kirsty Squires

Principal

RETURN AND EARN The Year 6 School Leaders have recently had to come up with an idea for their leadership program because they couldn't do the thing they have in previous years because of the current Covid-19 Pandemic. We have decided to do a Return and Earn project where parents can drop off bags of cans and bottles every Friday morning from this week from 8:30-9:00am where school leaders will be waiting to collect them. The money will be going to the school Year 6 present for the School and also donated to Stewart House which supports venerable students. Wishing you the safest during these times.

Aurora and the VVPS Leadership Team

SCHOOL GATES School gates are now locked each morning at 9:30am and opened again in the afternoon at 2:15pm. If you have to come into the school please phone the office for instructions 4328 4433. There is no entry during the day through the Binya Street gate or the Elizabeth Street gate. Visitors are asked to park at the front of the school. Entry into the school will only be through the pedestrian gate next to the main driveway. We ask that you close the gate as you enter and leave.

TELL THEM FROM ME UPDATE I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours before the end of the term. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 19 June 2020 Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents. The consent form and FAQs are available in 23 languages.

K/6L & K/6G This term K/6L and K/6G have been learning about procedures. Some students have been ordering pictures and words into a sequence, while others have been learning how to write a procedure independently. On Fridays we have been following our different recipe procedures. So far we have made jam sandwiches and chocolate milkshakes. We look forward to making pizzas next week.

Merit Awards—Congratulations to the following students :

THIS WEEK IN PBL—The Bathrooms At Valley View we demonstrate responsible use of toilets at all times. We are responsible about water usage and correct behaviour within the toilets as well as keeping them clean and tidy. We use toilet paper appropriately and when we have finished using the toilets we wash our hands and return sensibly and safely to class in a timely a manner. We are respectful by being aware of others privacy.

NEXT WEEK IN PBL - Right place, right time At Valley View we need to be in the RIGHT PLACE at the RIGHT TIME. This is so teachers know where you are and we can keep you safe. If you are in the wrong place and something happens to you, we won’t be able to help you.

P&C Meetings WOW! What a great turn out at our most recent P&C Meeting. We held our first meeting via Google Meet in 3 months last Tuesday. It was really great to see some familiar faces from our school community. Our next meeting will be held early in Term 3, Tuesday 11th August 7pm. Information regarding our next meeting will be released shortly.

Breakfast Club Breakfast Club is back! We are so excited! OOSH NEWS Language, Communication, Cooperation, Teamwork and Peer Support have been in abundance this fortnight as the children welcome each other back to school and OSHClub. Sharing thoughts ideas, opinions, and feelings with each other has seen the children reconnect and build new friendships. Many of the older children have been welcoming new children to our service by supporting them during the transition and guiding them through our routine while also teaching them the rules to some of their favourite games like Chess and Uno. Teamwork has been a daily occurrence with many children working together on construction projects such as Lego and block building with many sharing engineering and structure ideas with their peers. Leadership skills have been emerging with many children leading group games in both the indoor and outdoor areas, reminding others of expectations and leading by example with hygiene practices.

In collaboration with the children we have begun to implement a rewards system for outstanding achievements from each child during the rest of Term 2. Each child will collect Rewards Tokens to then be used on our Rewards Day during Week 10. The children have discussed and created a menu of their favourite foods and drinks to be enjoyed during our end of term Rewards Day afternoon tea. Each child is given the opportunity to earn as few or many tokens as they wish, with their total amount going towards selecting from their menu.

Our Emotion Control Centre is complete Working in collaboration with the children we have created a self-regulation wall to allow children the opportunity to visit when their emotions are heightened to give them hints and tips of how to best regulate these emotions. All the children were excited this fortnight to see our wall being created using known characters, and then finally complete.
