    Thewind,howlinglikeapackofwolves,rippedthroughmyshelterthismorningandclawedaholejustabovemypillow.Itwasn’tthebestwaytowakeup!Likeadribblingdog,myfacewasspatteredwithdrizzlingrainthroughthenewhole.Reluctantly,Igotoutofbed,stretchedmyachingbackandrepairedmytent.

    IwrappedmythreadbarecoataroundmetightlytoprotectmeagainstthebittercoldasIsteppedoutside.Withsoggyfingers,Igrabbedmytrustybackpackandheadedoutintotheyard.

    Underthedarksky,thevastmountainsofgapingTVscreensseemedtosneerdownatmeandlookedtallerthanever.Annoyingly,becauseIwasdistractedbyanoldpieceofsackthatwaswavingonabrokencardoorlikeasurrenderflag,Isteppedstraightintoafreezingcold,oilypuddle.Brilliant.

    JustwhenIthoughtmydaycouldn’tgetanyworse,IrealisedI’dleftmybreakfastathome.NowIwascold,wetandhungry.Inquiteagrump,Iplonkedmyselfdownwithadampsighonanold,flowerysofathatbelchedupacloudofdustasIlanded.Allaroundme,thejunkyardgroanedandmoanedaboutthebadweatherandIcouldhearcardoorsscreamingastheywerethrownbackwardsandforwardsbythenaughtygustsofwind.IrestedmychininmyhandsandfeltutterlymiserableasIwatcheddripsofraindropofftheendofmynoseontomylap.

    AgiantgustofwindknockedatincanrightfromthetopoftabletowerandIwatcheditbounce,tumbleandsomersaultitswaydowntotheground,beforelandingwithathump.Itwasthen,buriedbehindthetincan,Inoticedoneslendermetalarmreachingoutoftherubbishpile.Thenasecondarm.Thenathird.Thenafourth.Itstarnishedsilveredgesreflectedthefewraysofsunlightthatweretryingtowrestlethroughthestormclouds.Isquelchedovertowherethetincanhadlanded(myrighttoeswerenowascoldasiceandgreasywithpetrolthathadsoakedintomysock)andstartedtoscrabblethroughthepilesofmetalandtangledwiresthathadmadeabirdnestforanenormoustineagle.Myheartstartedtospeedupwithexcitementandanenormousgrinstretchedacrossmywind-chilledfaceasIpulledmynewtreasurefromthejunkyard.

    I’mnowbackinmyshelterandI’mtryingtoheatupmycoldtoesoverasmallfireIstartedinthetincan.FromwhereI’msitting,Icanseemylatesttreasure:itisproudandtallwithboldspikesthatstandupandgleamlikeaking’scrown.I’lladmit,Iwouldn’tneedagardenforkfordoinganygardening(thereisn’tmuchroomtogrowtulipshere)butitdoesmakeaperfectbootdryingrackforsoggyrightshoesandsoggyrightsocks!

    Firstly,althoughIagreethatitisimportanttobuildnewhomesandthatitwillgivenearlyeightyfamiliessomewheretolive,Iamworriedaboutthepeoplewholiveinthejunkyard.Someofthemonlyearnmoneybysellingcraftstheyhavemadefromthingsrecycledfromthejunkyard.Thismeansthatyouwillhavearoundthirtypeoplewhohavebeenmadehomelessandevenunemployed.Isthereaplanforwheretheycanmovetoorwhatworktheycanget?

    Secondly,thejunkyardisactuallyaveryvaluablepartofthecommunity.Despiteitsslightlyuglyappearance,theyardisactuallyfullofawiderangeofobjectsandmaterialsthatcouldberecycledorreusedinsteadofthrownaway.Furthermore,theresidentsofthejunkyardfindanamazingmixoftreasurethere.Therefore,Ibelieveitisworthprotecting.

    Finally,Iunderstandthatmanypeopleseethejunkyardasahorribleplace.Eventhoughitistruethatratsandfoxeslivethere,itisalsohometoawiderangeofotherplantsandcreaturesandisactuallyanimportanthabitatforover50speciesinShedville.Ifyouremoveit,youwillbedestroyingnotonlythehomesofmanypeoplebutalsomanycreatures.
