The Regional Resource Recovery Centre, or RRRC, is a green initiative of the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council, or SMRC, established to represent five local councils south of Perth, including Cockburn, East Fremantle, Fremantle, Kwinana and Melville. Covering an area of 340km2 and a combined population of over 288,000 residents, it uses state of the art technology and infrastructure to process waste and recover recyclables for reuse.

The RRRC diverts more than 60,000 tonnes of waste per year from landfill and prevents about 70,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, which is equivalent to taking more than 7,000 cars off the road.

Recycling’s as easy as RRRC…

Free tours of the RRRC are available, helping to educate people about the recycling process, while offering safe and clear views into the different facilities. Find out more by calling 9256 9555, visit recycleright.wa.gov.au or smrc.com.au

3 Bin Trial

Using Your Bins

In late 2017 a new 3 bin system will be trialled to 7,000 households in the City of Melville, as part of a joint project between the City of Melville, Fremantle and Town of East Fremantle.

The new system will allow for better separation of waste and some great outcomes for the community and environment.

Your area will not be involved in the trial, so you can continue to use your existing bins as explained in this calendar. For more information and updates visit recycleright.wa.gov.au

BIN PLACEMENT AND TIPSTo assist us in servicing your bins please:• Place bins out by 6am on the day of

collection• Place bins within 1.5m of the kerb with

handles facing towards your property• Place bins half a metre apart to allow

access for the waste truck arm • Do not overfill your bin – the trucks cannot lift bins

weighing over 70kg• Ensure bin lids are closed to ensure that waste doesn’t

blow out• Place your bin clear of obstacles e.g. cars, trees• Do not place hot ash, liquids, oil, paint or solvents in your

bins as they will damage bins, trucks and the environment. • Return bins to your property as soon as possible• Store bins in a shaded area and clean regularly • Alternate collection arrangements can be made to assist

frail, aged and disabled customers • Freeze smelly food before placing in your green bin before

collection• Wrap moist and perishables in newspaper before placing

in your green bin

We all know recycling is a simple way that everyone can help the environment and help combat climate change. Recycle Right is a campaign which encourages and assists residents and businesses in the South Metropolitan Region to reduce their rubbish and recycle more. The 3 R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle – are a simple way to rethink the things that you no longer need and make a difference today!

EASY TIPS FOR BETTER RECYCLING:

In the yellow-topped bin you can place:All glass, even broken glassAll metal containersAll paper, even glossy magazinesAll plastic containers

The green-topped bin is for household waste, such as kitchen scraps and garden clippings, which are composted and used in local farming and landscaping projects.

Don’t bag your recycling – place items loosely in the bin, this helps with the sorting process at the Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC)

Before placing anything in either bin, ask yourself “can this be reused?” Better to reuse before recycle.

Some items, if placed in your bins, cause harm to machinery or staff at the Recovery Centre such as batteries, electronic devices or e-waste, or household hazardous waste. Disposal options for these are given in this calendar, or consult the free Recycle Right app, available from the App store or Google play or visit recycleright.wa.gov.au.

To find out what happens to your waste and recycling:

• Ring 9256 9555 to book a free tour of the RRRC

• Consult the Recycle Right website recycleright.wa.gov.au
