How Can We the Phases
Plan how to conduct your inquiry. Carry out your procedure. Record your results in your table.
Question and PredictYou are going to test various samples to find out if they are solids, liquids, or gases.
Decide on questions to test your samples. Record them in a table like this one:
Plan and ConductYou will need:• sealable bag
• samples to test
• containers with different sizes and shapes
Sample Can you pour it?

Process and AnalyzeClassify each of your samples as a solid, liquid, or gas. Record your findings in your table.
EvaluateHow are liquids and gases similar? How are they different?
Apply and InnovateIf you wanted to make chocolates in different shapes, in what phase would you work with the chocolate?
What new questions do you have about phases of matter?
CommunicateShare your results with the class.

Explore! serves as a visual table of contents and supports a nonlinear, curiosity-driven approach to the exploration of the science concepts in a unit.

BiomesBiomes are large regions of Earth that have similar climates and similar plant and animal communities. There are five major types of biomes: forests, grasslands, desert, tundra, and aquatic.
Land biomes are influenced by temperature and precipitation patterns.
Grassland Biomes
Characteristics:• hot summers and cool
winters• little precipitation• grasses and other small,
flowering plants• insects and grazing
animals such as buffalo and antelope
Forest Biomes
Boreal
Forest biomes are dominated by trees. Rainforests occur in both temperate and tropical biomes.
Characteristics:• warm summers and
cold winters• moderate precipitation• evergreen conifer trees• plants and animals
are adapted to surviving long winters
Characteristics:• warm summers and
mild winters• moderate to heavy
precipitation• coniferous and
deciduous trees• a large variety of
plants and animals
Characteristics:• hot year-round• moderate to heavy
precipitation• large trees and
climbing vines• an extremely large
variety of plants and animals

Desert Biomes
Tundra Biomes
Semi-Arid Deserts
Arctic Tundra
Characteristics:• hot year-round• very little precipitation• cacti and other plants
that are adapted to survive with little water
• animals such as insects, spiders, lizards, snakes, birds, and small mammals
Characteristics:• cold year-round• little precipitation• mosses, grasses, and
small shrubs• animals adapted to
surviving long, very cold winters
Q: Deserts and tundra both have very few plants and trees. How might this affect how animals find shelter?
Hot deserts often have extremely high daytime temperatures and cool nights.
Alpine tundras are similar to Arctic tundras but are high up mountains. Temperatures are not as cold, but it is often very windy.
Semi-arid deserts have cooler climates than hot deserts.
Arctic tundras have cold winters with temperatures often below –30 °C. The ground may be permanently frozen.
1. Go outside and take a moment to observe and connect with nature. Look for characteristics of your biome.
2. Gather information about your biome from other sources.
3. What kind of biome do you live in? Provide evidence to defend your choice.
4. Compare the biome you live in with a different biome. What are the main similarities and differences?
5. How do the characteristics of your biome influence your daily life? Why is it important to learn about the biome you live in?

Engaging questions, embedded throughout the narrative, help students make connections, check their understanding, or extend their thinking.
Carefully selected images and their corresponding captions provide multiple entry points into the science, and act as springboards for further inquiry.

How Can We
IdeateCome up with as many ideas as you can. Be creative. Write them all down—even the crazy ones! Add to your classmates’ ideas.
Look at your ideas. Which ones will work best?
DefineWhat are the most important facts about the phases of matter that you need to include in your model?
Understand the ContextFind out what your classmates already know about the phases of matter. Ask questions:
• What is difficult to understand about phases of matter?
• Is there something you do not understand about particles and phases?
Design and make a model to help your class understand the three phases of matter.

Model Matter?PrototypeMake a plan. What materials will you use? Work safely.
Create the first version of your model. This is your prototype.
As you work, you might change your tools, materials, or steps. Record any changes.
TestDemonstrate your prototype. Ask:
• Which parts help your classmates understand phases of matter?
• Which parts confuse them?• Do they have any suggestions?
Make changes to improve your prototype.
Repeat this process until you are satisfied.
MakeCreate the final version of your model. Include all the changes from your testing.
Share• Describe your design process.• Did your model help your classmates
understand the phases of matter?• How is your model different from the
real phases of matter?

Conduct an Inquiry! are full investigations that engage students in the skills, processes, and habits of mind of scientific inquiry.
Place-based activities, identified with a tree icon, provide students with opportunities to develop the skills, processes, and habits of mind of scientific inquiry in local outdoor settings. For K–3, Teacher Cards contain summaries of the place-based portion of the activity, including prompting questions and the related formative assessment strategies.
Try This! activities appear at the beginning, middle, or end of Explorations and provide students with opportunities to develop science skills and conceptual understandings by doing science.
