pleted the hole in six shots or less continued tothe next hole where a large white tarp wasawaiting them a few feet in front of the tee box.For hole No. 2, golfers could either hit around, over, through or under the tarp with any of theirthree clubs.

Players, like Bruce Leland and Bennett Black, chose to the hit the ball around the sheet withstellar results.

Golfers with a score of five or less continuedon to the 3rd hole. During this hole, the sevenremaining golfers wore a bright orange winterjacket, which was zipped, hooded and equippedwith fluffy black gloves.

Leland did not make the final cut after missinghis tee shot. Sholts assured his place as a finalistafter coming back from a tee shot in the treeswith a long putt for five.

Bryant Black, Sholts, Tyler Whiting andBennett Black broke tradition by all four mak-ing it to the final hole where they played theentire hole – apart from putting – with a minia-ture club.

The downhill slope of the green at the end ofthe hole provided a problem for Bennett Blackwho was putting for par, but ended up with a sixafter three-putting. This score tied him withBryant Black.

During the tiebreaker, Bryant and Bennettchipped with the miniature club from the top ofthe green of the 4th hole.

Though the chips were almost identical,Bryant’s ball crept passed Bennett’s by only afew inches, securing him first place.

During the Derby, participants walked besidetheir caddies, three clubs dangling in theirhands. They putted with irons, drivers orhybrids and the majority never wore shoes.

As the sun set over the golf course, the final-ists took their victory joyously and preparedthemselves for the competitions that lie ahead.

Berry got off to a strong start withback-to-back birdies on six andseven. He bogeyed No. 9 to go intothe turn at one under. He was evenbetter on the back, birdying Nos. 12,15 and 16. His only blemish came on18 with a bogey.

It marked the eighth time Berryhas earned at least a share of theResorters Pro-Am title and the sixthtime for Barge. It was also the secondtime these two shared the title aftertying back in 2001.

Alexandria head pro RonRebrovich was not far off the pace.He shot a 71 after going into the turnat one-under. Alexandria assistantgolf professional Grant Hanson shota 76. He bounced back from a 40 onthe front to shoot even par on theback.

Men’s Division boasts two formerchamps, three Junior Division titlists

A sizzling start on theback nine – includingan eagle – lifted MarkGiorgi of Red Wing tomedalist honors in theResorters Men’sC h a m p i o n s h i pDivision.

The 20-year-oldGiorgi rose above theheat and wind, coollydrilling six birdies enroute to a round of 68.

His score was one offthe pace of last year’smedalist score, a 67carded by Alexandria’sTyler Whiting.

Giorgi’s first ninewas a middle-of-the-road 38 but he caughtfire after crossing theroad with birdie, birdie, eagle, birdie and

birdie on the next fiveholes.

A bogey on No. 15slowed his pace but heclosed out the round insteady fashion with twostraight pars and abirdie for a round of 38-30-68.

That’s two strokesbetter than Giorgi’squalifying round of 70in last year’s Resorters.(Giorgi went on to lose6-5 in his openingmatch to a red-hotBennett Black.)

Giorgi is hoping themedalist momentumwill roll further than itdid last year whenWhiting was eliminat-ed in the opening roundby Brian Robley.

Are you ready for some matchplay?

The field of 32 hopefuls whomade this year’s cut – a qualify-ing round of 76 or better – sureare.

Although the divisionincludes just two former cham-pions – last year’s titlist DonConstable of Deephaven and2008 champ Tyler Whiting ofAlexandria – it’s still packedwith potential.

In addition to Constable, threegolfers who advanced to lastyear’s quarterfinals are back foranother go at it – ThomasStrandemo of Fargo, GeoffKlein of Mankato and formerAlexandrian Jack Dressen ofEdina (who won the JuniorDivision in 2004).

Besides Dressen, two otherJunior Division champs arehoping to add a Men’s Divisiontitle to their trophy case – SeanHalverson of Baxter (2007) and

Joey Shroyer of Victoria (2008).Several other tough competi-

tors who have advanced deepinto the tournament beforeinclude Eric Peterson of Benson(1993’s runner-up), GordyDiekman of Alexandria, ChrisSholts of Alexandria, BenVangsness of Alexandria, TylerMonda of Brainerd, DerekSwedberg of Alexandria, AlecHeinen of Edmond, Oklahomaand Paul Webskowski ofPlymouth.

The Black brothers, Bryantand Bennett of Alexandria, arealso back in the hunt.

The bar was set pretty high inqualifying. The cut, a round of76, was one stroke off last year’sblistering mark of 75 but twostrokes better than 2009’s pace of78.

All in all, the 2011 ResortersMen’s Division has a lot to cheerfor – an exciting mix of youngand veteran players, local

favorites, long shots and playerslooking for a chance at redemp-tion.

It all starts today at noon fromNo. 1.

Tom Morris, Jr., in the1868 Open Championship atPrestwick, made the firstrecorded hole in one.

The oldest person in theworld to ace was OttoBucher. He was 99 when hescored a hole in one in 1985.And two 6-year-olds –Tommy Moore (1968) andBrittny Andreas (1991)– beat the odds, too.

Chances of making a holein one if you’re not a pro:1:12,600.

No one knows why thewarning shout of “fore!” isused all over the world, butit is known that the firstperson to shout it was a cad-die named Herd, in 1854.

One speculation is thatit’s a shortened version of“beware before!” – which isshouted by the British army

artillery as a warning to theinfantry in front of them. The infantry would lie downto let the cannonballs passover their heads.

Golfers are thus warnedby fellow players that duck-ing might be a good idea.

The human traffic is soheavy on the Fukuoka GolfCourse in Japan that stop-and-go lights have beenplaced at three holes.

The Nyanza Club inBritish East Africa (1950)allowed a player anotherball, without penalty, if thefirst landed too near a croc-odile or a hippopotamus.

The wooden tee wasinvented in 1920 by Dr.William Lowell, a Bostondentist and golfer. Dr.Lowell wanted to protect hishands from becomingscratched. Golfers previous-

ly would make a small pileof sand or dirt for the ball.

Near the end of a particu-larly trying round of golf, during which the golfer hadhit numerous fat shots, hesaid in frustration to hiscaddy, “I’d move heaven andearth to break a hundred onthis course.”

“Try heaven,” said thecaddy. “You’ve alreadymoved most of the earth.”

first two holes to quickly go 2-up.Petersen padded the lead with a

nifty birdie on No. 5 but Motanichrallied with a bogey win on No. 7 tocut the lead back to two.

Petersen won the next hole with apar but lost the momentum whenMotanich won No. 9 with par andNo. 10 with birdie.

With a slim 1-up lead going intothe long No. 12, Petersen made hismove, winning the hole with par andadding a birdie win on No. 14.

Both golfers could only managebogeys on No. 15 before Peterseniced the match with a par on the 16thhole.

Hartmann def. Johnson, 3-1It was one of the biggest turn-

arounds of the day.Trailing by three going into No. 12,

Mike Hartmann pulled off a stun-ning comeback, winning the next sixholes to defeat Randy Johnson ofMarshall, 3-1.

Hartmann’s amazing string had arhythm to it: par, par, birdie, par, par, birdie.

A different song was playing onthe front nine. Johnson won fourholes, Nos. 1 (birdie), 4 (par), 7(birdie) and 9 (par) while Hartmannwon just two holes – back-to-backwins on Nos. 5 and 6.

After Johnson took No. 10 with apar, he appeared to be singing theright tune but Hartmann quicklychanged the station to advance intotoday’s second round.

Mattson def. Johnson, 8-7Greg Mattson played nearly mis-

take-free golf against DarrylJohnson of Alexandria and it paidoff with a big win.

Mattson won six holes on the frontnine with solid pars on Nos. 1, 3, 5, 7,8 and 9.

He kept the pressure on fromthere, winning No. 10 and 11 with

two more pars to escape the heatwith a cool 8-7 victory.

Bodelson def. Chesley, 3-1Scott Bodelson of Burnsville

jumped out to a big lead, faltered abit in the middle of his match, butheld on to defeat Robert Chesley ofMankato, 3-1.

Bodelson won the first three holeswith pars and took a commanding 4-up lead with another par on No. 5.

Chesley whittled away at the leadwith wins on No. 7 (par) and No. 8(birdie), but trailed by two at theturn.

After halving the first four holeson the back nine, Chesley broke theice with a par win on No. 14 to edgewithin one.

Bodelson, however, hung tough. He won the next hole with a bogey, matched Chesley’s par on No. 16 andclosed the match with a nice birdieon the short 17th hole.

Feriancek def. Falls 4-2Alexandria’s Rick Feriancek out-

lasted Bob Falls of Edina in a hard-fought 4-2 battle.

Feriancek won four holes on thefront – Nos. 3, 5, 8 and 9 while Fallscarded two wins – Nos. 1 and 7.

Leading by two, Feriancek made aclutch par on No. 10 to go 3-up.

Falls tried to battle back but couldonly match Feriancek stroke-for-stroke on the next five holes.

The match finally ended withFeriancek’s birdie on No. 16.

Battey def. Zinn, 4-2Judge Dave Battey of Alexandria

fended off a last-minute rally fromByron Zinn of Spicewood, Texas fora 4-2 verdict.

Battey dominated the front nine, winning six holes to Zinn’s one. Ahighlight was Battey’s eagle on No.6.

Battey padded his lead to 6-up witha birdie on No. 11, but Zinn staged acomeback, winning Nos. 13, 14 and15 with par, par birdie to pull within

three.Battey closed the contest with a

solid par win on No. 16.Hanson def. Mehesan,

19 holesNever give up.That was Brad Hanson’s mantra

against Don Mehesan ofAlexandria.

Hanson never led in the matchuntil the 19th hole.

It was a closely fought battle fromthe get-go. Mehesan won the firsthole with par, added another par winon No. 3, but lost No. 5 to Hanson’spar.

Mehesan made a move on No. 7, apar to put him 2-up – a lead he helduntil the 10th hole when Hanson’spar pulled him to within one again.

Mehesan answered with a par winon No. 11, but the seesaw match con-tinued when Hanson won the nexthole with par and finally evened thescore with a par win on No. 13.

Mehesan quickly broke the tiewith a birdie on the next hole andheld his slim lead going into No. 18.

That’s when Hanson evened thematch again with a par to force anextra hole – and complete his come-back.

Arnold def. Kowalczyk,3-1

Through the first nine holes, JimArnold of Plymouth and LarryKowalczyk barely blinked.

Arnold won No. 3 with birdie andKowalczyk won No. 9 with par.Otherwise, it was even-Steven golf.

The back nine told a differentstory. After Kowalczyk won No. 11with par, Arnold caught fire, win-ning Nos. 12, 13 and 14 with a pair ofbirdies and a par to go back on top, 2-up.

They halved the next two holesbefore Arnold drilled another birdieon the short 17th hole to wrap up thewin.

Freeman def. Southland, 7-5

Bill Freeman started his matchagainst Tom Southland with a bogey.

It was just about his only miscueof the day.

Freeman took control of thematch early after dropping that firsthole. He won Nos. 2, 3 and 4 with par, par, birdie and closed out the frontnine with a trio of wins, all pars, togo 5-up at the turn.

Freeman kept the pressure onwith a birdie on No. 10. Southlandmanaged a par win on No. 11, but itwas too little, too late. Freeman icedthe match with birdies on Nos. 12and 13 for an easy 7-5 victory.

Bloedorn def. Lodge, 1-upThree crucial birdies on the back

nine propelled Brian Bloedorn to a 1-up nail-biter against Dave Lodge ofChamplin.

Lodge prevailed on the front nine, winning four holes to Bloedorn’stwo.

Bloedorn refused to surrender, however, and came back with abirdie on No. 10 to draw within one.

Both golfers matched each other’spars on the next five holes.

Trailing by one going into No. 16,Bloedorn knew he had to make amove soon and he did, deliveringback-to-back birdies to steal thelead.

The match ended on the 18th greenwith pars.

Flesch def. Seashore, 4-2Another hard-fought match in the

Senior Men’s Division saw MichaelFlesch slip past Gene Seashore, 4-2.

Nos. 1 and 2 to inch back within one. He thenanswered a par win for Haugen on the 4th with abogey win of his own on the 5th.

The two halved No. 6 before Haugen put togeth-er his biggest hole of the day on 7. His birdie onthe hole meant Franklin needed to take the nexttwo to force a playoff. It didn’t happen as bothplayers bogeyed No. 8 to secure the win forHaugen.

Adams def. Brundell, 1-up

It took all 18 holes but Maple Grove’s NickAdams got the job done by outlastingAlexandria’s Devin Brundell on Tuesday.

Adams survived a birdie win for Brundell onNo. 7 as he hung on to a 1-up lead over the finaltwo holes. Both players double bogeyed 8th beforepars on the 9th gave Adams the win.

The close outcome was a fitting ending to aback-and-forth affair. Adams held a two-hole leadafter their first two on the back. Brundellrebounded from triple bogey on 11 to take Nos. 12,14 and 17 with par wins. That gave him a 1-up leadheading into the front.

Adams made his charge over the first five holes. He took No. 2 with a par and the 4th with a bogeyto regain the lead. His par win on 5 then proved tobe enough as he held on down the stretch.

Mathews def. Amundson, 5-4

Alexandria’s Natalie Amundson proved shecould hang with the guys by qualifying for thechampionship flight but saw her run come to anend on Tuesday in a 5-4 loss to Edmond,Oklahoma’s Cole Mathews.

Mathews jumped out to an early lead and neverlooked back in this one. A birdie on 11 got himgoing as he took three straight holes. Amundsongot par wins on Nos. 15 and 18 that were sand-wiched around a par win for Mathews on the 16th.

He put things away after making the turn.Mathews backed up a bogey win on the 1st withpar wins on Nos. 2 and 3 to go 5-up. He wouldnever give any of that back as he lived to fightanother day.

Heinen def. Maher, 7-5Former Junior Division champion, Nick

Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma, got his tourna-ment off to a solid start as the No. 2 seed took careof Alec Maher of Hutchinson, 7-5.

Heinen never lost a hole as he remained steadythroughout the afternoon. He got birdie wins onNos. 11 and 12 to start the day and took 16 and 17with pars to go into the turn 4-up.

Heinen continued to apply the pressure on thefront. He birdied the 1st before parring No. 3 tomove to 6-up. He ended his day in style, birdyingNo. 4 to secure his spot in the quarters.

Buysse def. Johnson, 3-2

Alex Buysse of Marshall came back from anearly deficit to outlast Alexandria’s AaronJohnson after a big charge on the front.

Johnson won holes 11 and 12 and was 1-up head-ing into the turn. That was when Buysse began tomake his move. A par win at No. 2 evened thingsup before Buysse birdied the 4th to take his firstlead. He followed that with par wins on the 5thand 6th. Johnson took the 7th with a bogey win,but Buysse secured the win with a par win on the8th.

Kranz def. Bigger, 19-holes

Carter Kranz will always remember the way his2011 Resorters Tournament got started afterstorming back for a win in 19 holes overAlexandria’s Lukas Bigger.

The Sauk Centre golfer found himself downthree with three to go on Tuesday against thethird-seeded Bigger. That only added to the dramaas par wins on Nos. 7, 8 and 9 forced a playoff. Hecarried that momentum into the extra hole as hekept his hopes alive.

His win on the 19th hole marked the first timeKranz had led all day. Bigger started with wins onNos. 10 and 12 and added a win on 17 as he led byone heading into the turn. He added to that cush-ion with par wins on Nos. 1 and 2 before the twoeach took one over the next two holes. Kranzstayed alive by pushing on Nos. 5 and 6 beforemounting his comeback.

Swedberg def. Hennessy, 5-4

Ryan Swedberg of Monterey, California usedstrong runs on the back and the front to secure a5-4 win over Dan Hennessy of Alexandria.

Swedberg trailed by one after No. 10 but got

wins on Nos. 12, 13 and 14 to take a lead he wouldnever relinquish. Hennessy got wins on Nos. 16and 17 but could not survive a slow start to thefront nine.

Swedberg took advantage of an opportunity onthe first three holes. He got par wins on all threeof them as Hennessy opened the door with threestraight bogeys on the front. Swedberg thenadded a bogey win on the 5th to put the matchaway.

Echo PressCarter Kranz of Sauk Centre chipped from behind the 11th green yesterday during his opening round match in the championship flightof the Junior 13-15 Division against Alexandria’s Lukas Bigger. Kranz eked out a win in 19 holes. In other Junior 13-15 Division action,Natalie Amundson (left) of Alexandria mulled over her strategy for a dicey chip shot onto the 11th green. Amundson dropped her open-ing round match, 5-4, to Cole Matthews of Edmond, Oklahoma.

two holes before Fleschwrapped up the win withwins on Nos. 15 and 16.Tessmer def. Syverson,

3-2It was a classic stalemate. After Steve Tessmer of

Hood River, Oregon wonthe first hole with a birdie, his match againstAlexandria’s GarySyverson couldn’t havebeen any closer over thenext eight holes. Theymatched each other strokefor stroke.

Then, on No. 10,Tessmer’s par broke thespell, giving him a 2-uplead. He moved to 3-up onthe next hole with anotherpar but Syverson sliced itback to two with a birdiewin on No. 12.

The suddenly seesawingmatch continued withTessmer winning Nos. 13and 14 with pars andSyverson claiming No. 15with par to draw withinthree.

The match ended on No.16 with both golfers mak-ing par.Fluegel def. Rolfzen, 4-2

Early leads had a way ofvanishing in yesterday’sheat.

Ask Gary Rolfzen of St.Cloud. He won Nos. 1 and 3with birdie, par to go 2-up,but Alexandria’s MikeFluegel answered with apar win on No. 4.

Rolfzen got his lead backto two with a birdie win onNo. 6 but Fluegel ended thefront nine in style, winning

Nos. 7 (birdie) and 9 (par) totie the match.

Fluegel took his first leadof the day with a par on No.11 only to lose it on the nexthole to Rolfzen’s par.

After that, Fluegel tookcommand, winning thenext three holes and halv-ing Rolfzen’s par on No. 16to clinch a 4-2 win.

Prochnow def. Lende, 5-4

It just wasn’t Roy Lende’sday.

He had one highlight – apar win on No. 3, but otherthan that, Dan Prochnow ofColorado Springs,Colorado made quick workof the match.

Prochnow struck for fourconsecutive wins on Nos. 4-7, highlighted by a birdieon No. 6, and won No. 9with par to take a comfort-able 4-up lead at the turn.

After halving the nextthree holes, Prochnow wonNo. 13 with par and endedthe match a hole later bymatching Lende’s par.

Pederson def. Vipond, 5-4

Jeff Pederson played asteady round of par golf todefeat Tom Vipond ofWoodstock, Georgia.

He made just one mistake– a bogey on No. 6, whichVipond seized as his onlywin of the match.

Otherwise, Pederson’spars on six holes, Nos. 1, 4,5, 8, 12 and 14 were goodenough to win. Headvanced into the secondround a 5-4 victory.
