It took Dube´ anextra hole before heemerged with a win asthe two battled back andforth.

Things are starting toget interesting in theWomen’s Division.

Maggie Leland, thedefending champion andState Class AAA indi-vidual champ, and hersister, Molly, are bothalive in the upper brack-et for today’s champi-onship flight, whichopens on the first tee at12:54 p.m.

If Maggie can defeatMolly Noser ofRochester and Molly candefeat AmandaWoodhull of Minntonka,the two would face eachother in tomorrow’ssemifinal.

In the lower bracket,Betsy Aldrich of St.Louis Park, who has twoWomen’s Divisioncrowns to her name, aswell as one from theExecutive Women’sDivision, ousted a for-mer Women’s Divisionchampion in ConnieSornsin of Goodyear,Arizona (2002, 2004).

Fluegel got the task oftrying to knock him offand was up to the chal-lenge on his homecourse. It didn’t comeeasy. Fluegel andPederson battled into asixth playoff hole beforeit finally ended.

Becker’s GregMattson used a domi-nating front nine per-formance to secure a 4-3win over Bob Falls ofEdina.

Unfortunately for Adams, his trouble came on thefirst hole of a playoff against Hastings’ Logan Dube. Hansen ousts BergHansen, the Masters’

golfer from Lakeville,and Loren Berg fromAlexandria, were evenlymatched through thefirst two holes of the con-test, and it was Hansenjumping into the leadearly as he won both 12and 13 for a 2-up advan-tage.

Halving the followingtwo holes put the duo onNo. 16, where Hansenmoved to 3-up on a parwin, but Berg played thesame game on the nexthole to win by par.

Hansen closed out thefirst half of play with apar win on No. 18 for a3-up lead.

On the front nine,

Berg earned the firstwin with a par on thefirst hole, but Hansenthen added wins on 2, 4and 6, while Berg wasable to add just onemore, giving Hansen the4-3 victory.

Mohwinkel defeatsFreeman

A n n a n d a l e ’ sMohwinkel was theearly leader in this one,picking up wins on thefirst two holes.

Connie Freeman ofAlexandria cut that leadin half with a win on No.12, but Mohwinkeladded a win on 15 tolead by two at the half.

On the front nine,both players parred theopening hole, butMohwinkel then won thenext two holes on pars.

After the two sharedthree holes, the matchwas called withMohwinkel winning 4-3.

Not going so wellConnie Sornsin of Goodyear, Arizona reacted with frustration after a putt took a bad roll during Women’s Divisionchampionship flight play. Sornsin fell in her match to Betsy Aldrich of St. Louis Park.

A former championfell, the defending cham-pion survived a scareand a champion fromanother division rolledon in opening roundplay of the Men’sChampionship DivisionWednesday.

Tyler Whiting ofAlexandria, the 2008titlist and this year’smedalist, was knockedout of contention byanother Alexandrian –Brian Robley.

Although Whiting’s

scorching qualifyinground of 67 was eightstrokes better thanRobley’s, everything canchange in match playand that’s what hap-pened Wednesday asRobley eked out a 2-upvictory.

Last year’s champ,Jim Lehman Jr., had togo three extra holes butkept his repeat hopesalive.

Meanwhile, JackDressen, a formerAlexandrian and the

Resorters’ 2004 JuniorDivision champion,breezed to a quick 6-5win.

The action will kickup a notch today when

the “Sweet 16” startsfrom the No. 1 tee at1:48 p.m.

Lehman def.Peterson,21 holes

In a way, it’s a shamethat an extremely wellplayed, exciting round ofgolf was decided on ablown two-foot par putt,but that’s what hap-pened in the Lehman-Peterson battle.

Sixteen-year-old SamPeterson of Bensonshowed no signs ofnerves going up againstthe defending champion,winning the first twoholes with birdie, par.

Lehman rallied withthree straight wins onNos. 6, 7 and 8 to stealthe lead but Peterson’sbirdie on the 9th holemade it all square at theturn.

Peterson rolled in twomore birdies on Nos. 10and 11 to take his sec-ond 2-up lead butLehman’s par took No.13 and he once againdeadlocked the matchwith a birdie on theshort 17th hole.

Both golfers swappedpars on No. 18, forcingextra holes. After parson Nos. 1 and 2, thematch came down toputting.

Peterson had anadvantage. He was look-ing at a six-foot birdieputt while Lehman wasabout 25 feet out.

Lehman just missedhis bird, leaving the ballon the edge of the cupfor a gimme par.

Peterson hit his down-hill birdie try a little toofirm, running it abouttwo feet beyond the hole.He then missed the parputt coming back to bowout of contention.

“We both playedunder-par golf the wholeway,” said Lehman afterthe match. “Sam is agreat young player, anatural. He hits it a longway and straight. Ithink he’ll win theResorters one of theseyears.”

Lehman added thatthis year’s field is burst-ing with young talent.He’ll face 20-year-oldTyler Monda of

Brainerd today.Lehman, 51, said he’srelying on his “maturi-ty” to carry him fartheralong in the tourna-ment.

Tyler Monda ofBrainerd never trailedagainst Alec Heinen ofEdmond, Oklahoma.

He won the first hole,tied the next three andadded a pair of wins onNos. 5 and 6 to go 3-up.Monda’s birdie on No. 6was for the highlightreel. He hit a left-hand-ed chip shot from theleft trees.

Heinen sliced into thelead with wins on thenext two holes butMonda took No. 9 toregain a two-holeadvantage at the turn.

The match bouncedaround a little fromthere. Monda really puton the pressure with awin on No. 15 to go 3-up.He then matchedHeinen on the next holeto seal a 3-2 victory.Bahe def. Olson, 5-4Kyle Bahe of

Annandale likes thenumber “4.” That’s whathe shot on seven of thefirst nine holes againstJon Olson of Hopkins.Four of those 4s – onNos. 1, 4, 7 and 8 – gavehim a 4-up lead.

Olson’s par on No. 9pulled him to withinthree but he could onlymatch Bahe on the nexttwo holes.

Bahe’s par and bogeyon Nos. 12 and 13 puthim comfortably outfront by five.

Bahe closed the matchon the next hole withanother 4 to win it, 5-4.

Johnson crept to with-in one with a bogey winon No. 7 but Waldelandmade birdie on the 9th

hole to take a two-holelead at the turn.

Jack Dressen of Edinastormed out to a five-hole lead on the frontnine and gave up justone hole on the day, No.10, to coast to a quickvictory over AlexWoodhull.

Dressen made threebirdies – Nos. 4, 12 and13, which helped propelhim to a 6-5 win.

had Resorters fansbuzzing: An up-and-down duel between twoAlexandrians.

On the front nine, itwas all Brian Robley.After just six holes, hewas 5-up. Whiting final-ly got his first win onNo. 9 but trailed by fourat the turn.

The back nine, howev-er, belonged to Whitingand he appeared on theverge of a miraculouscomeback.

Whiting won Nos. 11,12 and 14 to pull towithin one and thendeadlocked the match

with a win on No. 15.Robley wasn’t about to

let this one slip away,however. He won No. 16to regain the lead,matched Whiting on thenext hole, and won No.18 to seal a stunning 2-up win.

It was one of the mostevenly played matchesof the afternoon.

Tom Smolenski ofMinnetonka and TannerGustafson of Carlos bothwon three holes on thefront nine.

After that, Todora justkept the pressure on. Hewon Nos. 7 and 8 with apar and a birdie to go 3-up at the turn.

Vangsness refused togive in easily, however.He won Nos. 10 and 11with pars to narrow thegap to one.

The margin stayedthere until No. 14 whenTodora’s par was goodenough to take the holeand put him 2-up.

Constable broke thedeadlock with back-to-back wins on No. 12 (abirdie) and No. 12 (par)to go 2-up and thenpadded the lead with akey par win on No. 15.

Gordy Diekman ofAlexandria had a hardtime getting anymomentum againstDerrick Whiting yester-day.

That rings true forAlexandria’s Connie Freemanwho, after golfing in the tour-nament for more than 50 years,has the fortune of playing withfamily members from allaround the state this year. Atotal of seven Freemans areplaying in the 2010 event.

It’s a group that crosses threegenerations from Connie toAlex and Mitch in the Junior13-15 Division.

The Freemans aren’t justplaying for fun; they’re in it towin it as five of the seven fami-ly members qualified for the

championship flight in theirrespective divisions.

Jon, Stefan and Bill all gavethemselves a chance at a titleby advancing in the ExecutiveDivision yesterday. Jon andStefan battled for theExecutive Men’s title last yearbefore Stefan beat his brotherin the 19th hole.

Two of the generational book-ends also qualified for theirchampionship flights as Conniemade it in the MastersDivision, while Mitch did thesame in his Junior Division.Mitch has already played hisway into the semifinals with a5-3 win over Garrett Turnacliffyesterday morning.

punched his ticket to the semifinals of the 13-15Division. Bill, Jon and Stefan all did the same yesterday

with wins in the Executive Men’s Division. Alexandria’sConnie Freeman qualified for the championship flight in

the Masters Division but came up just short in hisquest to advance yesterday.

Barge shot a six-under 66 to edge2009 co-champion Ben Meyers of theMedina Golf Club. Jeremy Decko andBrady Swedberg of AGC were part of agroup of four pros who finished tiedfor third with rounds of 68. Decko wasshooting for a share of his thirdstraight Pro-Am title. Alexandriahead pro Ron Rebrovich carded a 71and finished tied for 11th.
