Our Sample Handling line is one of the most extensivelines available in the chromatography industry.

We have top notch quality suppliers for vials, caps andinserts as well as Porvairʼs excellent line of 96-wellplates and mats.

Our vials are produced under the most stringentconditions with highly sophisticated productiontechnology out of 1st hydrolytic class glass.Only Schott glass is used as raw material, which resultsin an outstanding product.

Quality control and inspectionOpto-electronic (photo camera) devices on theglass machines measure within fractions of a second,whether the vial meets our specifications. A secondphoto camera inspection checks for cosmetic errors(cracks, chips) in theglass.

Length gauging equip-ment measures dimen-sional specifications inaddition to the camerainspection.

When a vial is not according to specification, itautomatically goes to waste.The vials are packed in a cleanroom, therefore avoidingany chance of contamination.

A manual random inspection and a final inspection toISO and other quality standards assure you of a great,problem free and reliable product.

We only supply caps from the main manufacturers inthe industry, who supply companies such as Agilent,Thermo Scientific and Waters.

Our cap manufacturers also use photo camerainspection.

We carry a wide variety of caps enabling you to choosewhat is right for your applications.

We believe we supply the highest quality productavailable in our industry.

Our recommended vials, caps and inserts are specificallydesigned and made for Agilent™ (HP) autosamplers.In general, Agilent™ autosamplers use a 9mm thread screw vial(sometimes called ROBO or DP vial).

These vials require a 9-425 screw cap, available in variouscolours for colour-coding of your samples (see pages 6-7).For Biopharma applications, we recommend a PTFE/Siliconeliner.Most of Agilent™ GC and some LC applications use 11mm crimpvials with an 11mm aluminum crimp cap available in 5 colors(see page 4-5).Some chemists prefer a snap cap, which requires a 11mm snapcap. For snap vials and caps see page 8-9.For 8mm crimp vials and Headspace vials, please refer topage 18 and pages 26-27 respectively.

Wash Vials with Coloured Diffusion CapsAutosamplers extracting the sample from the vial with asyringe, need the syringe rinsed after each injection to keepsample carryover at a minimum. With increasing sensitivity ofthe analysis, the rinsing process becomes increasinglyimportant, especially when different or viscous samples areanalysed. The vial in which the solvent is kept is the wash vial.

Wash vials are in fact normal 4 ml screw vials which are filledwith a solvent. Instead of a septum, the screw cap has afunnel, the diffusion insert. The diffusion insert serves three

purposes: it closes the vial, it reduces evapora-tion of the solvent and guides the needle.Common diffusion inserts are loose in the capand when the vial is opened for filling, the diffu-sion insert ever so often jumps from the cap,disappearing into a dark corner of the laboratory

where it is hard to be found.

Wash vials have a diffusion insert that snaps into the screwcap staying in place when the vial is opened and filled.

Because a standard vial is 32mm in height while the wash vialis 45mm, a good part of the solvent in the wash vial cannot beused; for naturally the syringe descends to the same depth inboth the standard vial and the wash vial. Therefore the mini-mum filling level is marked on the wash vial.

On the side of the waste solvent this is in reverse. The syringeshould not dip into the waste solvent and the maximum fillinglevel is marked.

One wash vial filling of 2mL canbe used, which means if thesyringe is rinsed 3 times with 10

l it can be rinsed for 65 injec-tions. Even though the wash vialcontains clean solvent only, therepeated insertion of the syringe will contaminate the vial andthe diffusion insert. Therefore we recommend to exchange thewash vial regularly, at least after 100 injections. The sameapplies for the waste vial, which however can be used longer.

Wash vials are supplied in practical sets of100 pcs, the screw caps of the solventvials are yellow, red, green and blue, thosefor the waste vial are black and white.

A new introduction to the Porvair range is a low profile1.1ml 96-well round plate with a height of just 27mm. Thisallows more plates to be stored or stacked in a givenspace.

Microplates - Seals and Foils

Porvair Sciences has a comprehensive range of seals and foilsfor thermal and adhesive sealing of microplates. In addition, a fullrange of re-usable cap mats is available for friction sealing ofplates.

Foils and seals for the MicroSeal and MiniSeal Plus are suppliedas cut sheets, 125mm x78mm, in packs of 100.

For the automated TriSeal system, these come in roll form.Sample rolls are 5m long, while production rolls are either 500mor 610m long, enough to seal 5-6,000 plates on average.

All Porvair heat seals have a sealing integrity range of -80ºC to+120ºC and are resistant to DMSO and TFA as well as mostother solvents.

Using adhesive seals while wearing laboratory gloves can proveto be difficult. The glued surface of the seal can easily stick toyour glove rather than your microplate. Porvair MicroBurst™films eliminate this problem. When first handled, MicroBurst™ isnot tacky and will not stick to anything. Only when you aresatisfied that the film is in the correct place do you press downhard to activate the MicroBurst™adhesive. Millions of tinyspheroids contain the adhesive and these“microcapsules” burstunder applied pressure to release the adhesive just where youwant it and not all over your gloves! The clear film has excellentoptical properties and once activated, produces a very firm sealwhich quickly strengthens to form a near-permanent seal onyour plates. MicroBurst™ film can be pierced by pipette tips orrobot liquidhandlers and is temperature stable – making it idealfor PCR work.

Microplate Evaporators

Porvair evaporators are designed to remove the traditionallaboratory ʻbottleneckʼ of solvent evaporation from microplatesprior to analysis or reconstitution in storage buffer.These evaporators give significant throughput advantages tolaboratories looking to optimize microplate sample preparationproductivity.Faster than centrifugal evaporation, significant increases insample throughput are achieved through advanced evaporatorhead technology and an innovative manifold design, whichdirectly injects heated nitrogen into each individual well of themicroplate simultaneously.The evaporators have been designed to be simple to install,operate and maintain. Installation requires only connection to agas supply or cylinder and mains electricity. Safety of operationis ensured as the CE marked compact units fit into all fumecupboards. Not suitable for high boiling solvents such as DMSOand water.

Both MiniVap™ and UltraVap™ may be operated with a supplyof clean, dry compressed air in place of nitrogen, if the chemistryallows. An in-line gas filter must be used in this case.
