AUDUBON The city of Audubon is located on Highway 10 approximately 40 miles east of Fargo, ND, and 210 miles northwest of Minneapolis, MN. Situated in the southwest corner of Becker County, it developed as a result of the 1871 expansion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Audubon was established as a community in 1873; it was settled mainly by farm-ers of Scandinavian descent. The town was named after the great American naturalist and artist, James A. Audubon. During an early tour of the “Audubon’’ branch of the NP line, a passenger, Audubon’s niece, commented on the beauty of the lily-covered prairie and asked that if a railroad station were ever built there, that it be named after her uncle. While searching for a township name, the Audubon name suggestion

seemed to stick, and on Jan. 2, 1881, it became the official town name. Today, Audubon is home to Team Industries and other indus-tries, as well as the Audubon con-venience store (Orton’s), Aurochs Veterinary Service, DreamMakers Bath & Kitchen and Country Wood Products. Audubon also maintains a post office, a co-op elevator, a municipal liquor store, a bank (State Bank & Trust of Audubon), a meat market (Audubon Meat Inc.), and the Zephyr Supper Club. CALLAWAy Callaway is located about 12 miles north of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59, approximately 45 air miles east of Fargo. It’s situ-ated in Becker’s northwest cor-ner, along the Soo Line Railroad’s “Glenwood route’’ — a section of track between Winnipeg and Minneapolis. The small farming communities of Richwood and Westbury lie within a 5 mile radius of Callaway. As the Soo Line pushed north-ward in 1903, the Callaway com-

munity developed. Callaway’s rich farmland attracted many early Scandinavian settlers who were interested in farming its fertile tracts of land. Today, agriculture remains Callaway’s main economic resource. Besides its own community center, Callaway is also home to Beautiful Savior Lutheran and Assumption Catholic churches, a volunteer fire department, Lions Club, Community Council, post office, munici-pal liquor store, Native Harvest, Noah’s Insurance and On the Go Convenience Store.

CORMORANT Cormorant Village is located north of Pelican Rapids and south of Lake Park, at the junction of Becker County Roads 5 and 11, near the big and little Cormorant lakes. First settled in 1876, the vil-lage once boasted a post office, flour mill, sawmill, two hotels and a school. Today, the unincorpo-rated village includes a community center as well as the Cormorant Store, a pub, liquor store, day spa (Serenity Salon), Cormorant Lumber and more.

DETROIT LAKES Detroit Lakes was original-ly home of the Sioux, until the Chippewa pushed them westward. During the mid 1800s, Detroit Lakes was a favorite resting place for trav-elers of the Red River Oxcart Trail, a 400 mile path from Winnipeg to St. Paul. For many years, the resting place was called “Ga-ia-wa-wan-gag’’ : a Chippewa name meaning, “Lake in which there is a crossing in a sandy place.’’ Settlers, having trouble pro-nouncing that name, preferred a traveling French priest’s description of the sandy place; he called it “Detroit,’’ using the French word for sand bar. The name stuck. Today, Detroit Lakes has an estimated pop-ulation of 7,719 residents. Today, Detroit Lakes is an impor-tant agricultural area; it is also the center of a thriving “412 Lakes’’ tourism district. Besides providing a strong educational system for its residents, Detroit Lakes is home to many different churches, industrial parks and a variety of retail busi-nesses. fRAZEE The city of Frazee is located at the junction of Highway 10 and Minnesota State Highway 87, approximately in the center of Becker County’s southernmost border; it is approximately 10 miles southeast of Detroit Lakes; 55 miles east of Fargo, and 195 miles north-west of Minneapolis. Frazee was settled in 1868, earn-ing it the distinction of being the first area settled in Becker County. When the Hobart Depot and Weymouth Hotel moved to Frazee in 1874, the city of Frazee developed quickly. (It was said the food at the Weymouth was so good, that the NP Line sched-uled regular stops to partake in its culinary delights.) The combination of the depot, a lucrative flour mill, and a booming logging industry, Frazee was Becker County’s largest city until the logging “boom’’ fizzled out at the turn of the century. At its peak, however, Frazee’s population climbed a little over 2000 in the late 1880s. Today, Frazee is home to many businesses. Daggett Trucking, Gary’s Furniture Store, the Frazee Municipal Liquor Store, Ketter’s Meat Market, and Homestead Building Supplies are just a few examples of Frazee’s thriving busi-ness district. LAKE PARK The city of Lake Park is located on Highway 10 approximately 35 miles east of Fargo and 215 miles northwest of Minneapolis. With gentle rolling hills and an elevation of 1270 ft., Lake Park is a fertile farm area producing grain, pota-toes, and livestock. Lake Park was named for a beau-tiful lake which used to be located on the original townsite. In the early 1870s, this lake was drained, how-ever, to allow for the building of the NP Railroad. Although the lake was lost forever, the railroad stimulated Lake Park’s growth as settlers took advantage of its easy transportation to the region. Today, Lake Park is home to many area businesses. Besides

a community cooperative, drug store, a hair salon, grocery store, laundromat, municipal liquor store, bank, city center, and pub-lic pool, the Lake Park community is home to a variety of churches, including the Lake Park Lutheran Church, the Gloria Dei Lutheran Parish and Eskjo Lutheran Church. The community also boasts three gas stations and a Lake Agassiz Regional LIbrary LINK site.

OGEMA Ogema is located on Becker County’s northern most boundary on Minnesota Highway 59. It’s approxi-mately 21 miles due north of Detroit Lakes. Ogema was founded in 1906, nearly 40 years after the establish-ment of the surrounding White Earth Reservation; its name, however, means “Chief’’ in the Chippewa lan-guage. The town developed as the result of the Soo Line’s northward expansion. Today, Ogema is home to a municipal liquor store, a community hall, a bank, beauty salon and M & W Foods. The community also has a post office, elementary school (Waubun-Ogema-White Earth), and Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. The White Earth Initiative office building is a recent addition.

OSAGE Osage is located on Hwy. 34 approximately 31 miles east of Detroit Lakes and 8 miles west of Park Rapids. It is located in the center of Becker County’s west-ern border, with the Smoky Hills State Forest providing its backyard. Today, Osage is governed by a town board and its school age children are bussed to the Park Rapids School District. Osage is located within Osage Township and maintains a grocery store (Osage Country Market), community center and post office.

PONSfORD Ponsford is located on Becker County’s eastern boarder at the intersection of County Road 129 and a small section of Minnesota Highway 225. Ponsford is a rich farming community, maintain-ing a post office, trading post, and hardware store for its population of about 25 people. Service orga-nizations include: Northern Lights 4-H Club, a volunteer fire depart-

ment (Carsonville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department), and the Helping Hand Club — a local organization devoted to helping the area’s poor and needy. Established in 1944, the organization is still going strong, “Doing unto others, as we would have others do unto us.’’

TWO INLETS Two Inlets is located on Becker County’s eastern border. Nestled quietly in Becker’s forest district, it is approximately 10 miles north of Osage and 12 miles northeast of Ponsford on County Road 44. The Two Inlets area was once a cen-ter of the thriving 1880s logging boom. Today, Two Inlets maintains a resort, sawmill, country store, Catholic church and town hall.

WHITE EARTH The community of White Earth is located within the White Earth Indian Reservation. It is located approximately 22 miles north of Detroit Lakes at the intersec-tion of County Road 23 and Minnesota Hwy. 224. The village of White Earth is governed by a community council. The council members are elected for two year terms and help facilitate commu-nity projects through fund raising efforts. White Earth village also maintains its own post office and ambulance service.

WOLf LAKE Wolf Lake is located about three miles north of State Highway 87, in the corner of the Smoky Hills State Forest. Detroit Lakes is 32 miles due west of the village which was settled mainly as a logging camp site. After the great forests of Minnesota had been exploited by big lumbering companies, Wolf Lake turned to farming. Today, Wolf Lake maintains many orga-nizations including: VFW, VFW Auxiliary, Lions Club, and Baseball Club as well as snowmobile, shoot-ing and sportsmen’s clubs.

OUTLyINGCOMMUNITIES HITTERDAL, located in Clay County, was incorporated as a vil-lage on April 1, 1918, and sepa-rated from the townships on May 3, 1919. It is named for a valley and lake in southern Norway. Among the first settlers were several peo-ple named Hitterdal. The town was named for Bendt O. Hitterdal, the original town proprietor. The post office began in 1887; M. J. Solum built a hardware and implement store on the first lot after the town-site was platted in 1896.

ULEN, also located in Clay County, was named in honor of Ole Ulen, its first settler. The city of Ulen was established on part of his homestead and was incorporated as a village on Nov. 12, 1896. The post office was established in 1884. WAUBUN, a city in Mahnomen County, has an Ojibwe name, meaning “the east,” “the morning,” and “the twilight of dawn.” It is spelled waban in Baraga’s Dictionary, and wabun by Longfellow in The Song of Hiawatha, with definition as the

east wind. The city was incor-porated as a village on Dec. 18, 1907. When the Soo Line built through the county in 1903-4, the general manager, Pennington, and his chief engineer, Thomas Green, named the stations as they moved the line north; all towns on the reservation had to have Indian names. The post office for this community was established in 1905 as Bement, changing to Waubun in 1906. PERHAM, located in Otter Tail County, is named after Josiah Perham, the first President of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The rail-road arrived in Otter Tail County in 1871. A mercantile store was erected on the north side of the tracks the next year and Perham has been prospering ever since. Perham currently boasts of a state-of-the-art community fitness and recreation center; a 27-hole, cham-pionship golf course. It is also the center for surrounding agriculture and tourism. VERGAS, located in Otter Tail County, is known as the “Home of the Loon,” the Minnesota State Bird. There is a giant 20 foot replica of the State Bird erected

on the shore of Long Lake, in the center of City Park, which is also home to a public beach and picnic area. There are 25 lakes within a five-mile radius of Vergas. The community’s present name comes from one of four in the “V” series used to designate Soo Line sleep-ing cars that traveled between

Minneapolis and Winnipeg. The post office began as Candor in 1904, the railroad station was Vergas, and the townsite was Altona, all names changing to Vergas in 1903. The community has a well-known bar and grill, a café, grocery store and a supper club just outside of town.

minnesota state Community & Technical College - Detroit Lakes: The Detroit Lakes campus of Minnesota State Community & Technical College (M State-Detroit Lakes) is part of a four-campus college. M State offers Diploma, AAS and AA degrees in a one- or two-year setting along with numerous online course offerings. The campus is located on Highway 34 East in Detroit Lakes. M State-Detroit Lakes offers a broad-based selection of program choices like Accounting and Nursing in addition to unique programs like Architectural

Technology, Business Entrepreneurship, Computer Network Security Marine Engines, Civil Engineering and Radiologic Technology. One of the newest programs on campus, Business & Entrepreneurial Services (BES), is housed in the BES Center. M State-Detroit Lakes has also signed an articulation agreement with Southwest State University Marshall (Minn.) and Mayville (S.D.) State University for students who wish to continue their education toward a four-year degree. M State-DL also offers a full-time Day Care Center for students with children. wildlife refuge Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District: This U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service office manages more than 50,000 acres of wetland and prairie habi-tat on Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) and easements in Becker, Clay, Mahnomen, Norman and Polk counties. These diverse prairie and wooded areas provide habitat for more than 280 bird species. Walk into the 1,372-acre Helliksen Prairie WPA in northwestern Becker County and experience the sights and sounds of a virgin tallgrass native prairie that is teeming with wetlands, wildlife and wildflowers. Hike the 1.5-mile Prairie Marsh Trail at the Headquarters WPA just north of Detroit Lakes and look for white-tailed deer, numerous migratory birds and other wildlife. Active osprey nests can be seen from the hiking trail. The trail is open during daylight hours for hiking and cross country skiing. Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge: Wetlands and nature grass-lands are being restored. Excellent viewing of waterfowl and birds of prey. Many interesting and unusual shore and marsh birds are nesting on the Refuge or can be seen during their migration period May-Nov. Best viewing in early morning and evening. Visitors will find new trails and overlook on interconnected wetlands. Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge: A visitor center near the intersection of Cty. Rds. 26 and 29 features an exhibit area, bookstore, and DVD program. Also, boat accesses, hunting areas, hiking trails and a self-guiding auto tour. Baseball Detroit Lakes Angels Amateur Baseball Team: The Angels join five other area teams in the Hi-10 Conference for the 2011 season. The team is composed of seasoned baseball veterans and young prospects, ranging in age from 18-35. Many players have college-level baseball experience. Social Service Programs Services to Families and Children: Services provided to help persons experiencing difficulty with family living, child rearing and adjust-ment problems. Services include case management, child protection, child placement, adoption, in-home family support, information and referral. Child Care Assistance: Financial assistance to families for their child care costs when they are working, looking for work, continuing their education or training to prepare for work. Developmental Disability Services: Services are provided to developmentally disabled children and adults to promote self sufficiency, independence and community integration with services provided in the least restrictive setting. Case management services are provided to assist in assessing individuals’ needs to develop case plans, to arrange for serv-ices and to monitor outcomes. Mental Health Services: Case management services for adults and children experiencing difficulty with their emotional or mental health needs including a full range of mental health services. This may also include assisting the Court to obtain involuntary commitments when neces-sary. Services to Seniors: Long term care consultation services are provided which include providing information and education to individuals on services available for assisting with long term care and chronic care needs. Assessments are done to determine health, social and psycho-logical needs and help is provided to identify services that are needed to support and maintain individuals in the last restrictive environment. Information is provided on eligibility for health care programs and recom-mendations are made on community-based services. Case management is provided to develop a case plan and arrange for services. Chemical Dependency Services: Provide chemical depend-ency evaluations, referrals to in-patient and out-patient facilities, case management and assisting the Court to obtain involuntary commitment when necessary. Day Care and Foster Care Licensing: Recruits and licenses Day Care homes and Adult and Child Foster Care homes in the county. Adult Protection Services: This program provides services to vulnerable individuals including frail, elderly and disabled individuals. These individuals may be experiencing difficulty protecting themselves and obtaining basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Reports

of vulnerable adults are received, investigated and services provided as needed. Services are focused on safety and well-being and support independent living. Agency staff collaborates and coordinates with home health, community health, law enforcement and other agencies that serve senior and disabled individuals.

Financial Assistance Medical Assistance (MA): Medical Assistance serves low income children under the age of 21, parents and relative caretakers of dependent children, pregnant women, people who are 65 or older and people with disabilities. General Assistance Medical Care (GAMC): General Assistance serves low income adults, ages 21-64, who have no de-pendent children under the age of 18 and who do not qualify for federal health care programs. Minnesota Care: Medical care provided to Minnesota residents who do not have access to affordable health insurance. Also, for persons who do not fit the income or asset guidelines of MA or GAMC. Diversionary Work Program (DWP): The Diversionary Work Program is a four-month program that helps low-income Minnesota fami-lies find jobs. The goal of DWP is to help parents immediately start work-ing and eliminate the need to receive welfare benefits. Eligible families can receive financial assistance to meet their basic needs and receive other supports such as food support, child care and health care assistance. Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP): The Min-nesota Family Investment Program is the state’s welfare program for low-income families with children. The focus of this program is to help families move toward economic stability by entering the workforce while offering resources of a cash grant, food support and child care assistance. Parents are expected to work. Most families can get cash assistance for only 60 months in a lifetime. General Assistance (GA): The General Assistance Program is for single adults and childless couples. The GA program provides monthly cash grants for eligible persons. Minnesota Supplemental Assistance (MSA): Minnesota Supplemental Aid is a state funded program that provides a monthly cash supplement to people who are aged, blind or disabled and who receive Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Food Support Benefits: The Food Support program is a county-administered, federal program that assists people and families with low incomes to purchase food and better meet their nutritional needs. The program is not intended to supply all of a person or family’s food needs. Instead, it is a supplement to help them achieve or maintain their inde-pendence.

Emergency Assistance: Helps individuals and families with hous-ing, heat or other basic needs. Child Support Enforcement Services: Insures that child obligations ordered by the court are paid by the parent. The services include basic support, medical support, and child care; location of parents; collection of current and past due obligations; and taking action against parents who fail to meet their court ordered obligations.

Community Health Community Health provides services for frail and elderly, disabled indi-viduals and vulnerable adults enabling them to live safely and independ-ently in the commu-nity. Community Health delivers post partum/newborn home visits and ongo-ing TANF visits for families. Community Health provides outreach and educa-tion for groups and individuals and assists in public nuisance investigations and some environmental health issues. The Public Health Emergency Advisory group is facilitated by Community Health. Community Health also provides lead assessments and education for children/parents and assists in early childhood screenings with several school districts. Contact: 218-847-5628, ext. 5397.

Family Based Services Home Visiting Program: Home visits are offered to pregnant women, infants, and children to provide ongoing support. This program is available to all families residing in Becker County. Maternal Child Health Services: All Becker County families with a new-born are contacted by a Community Health Nurse. A home visit will be offered to provide new parents with information on feeding choices, newborn cares and additional support. Parental, Childbirth and Newborn Education: Educational support is offered to all residents of Becker County. Material presented is tailored to meet the specific needs including labor and delivery, breastfeeding, bottle feeding and newborn/postpartum care. WIC (Women, Infants & Children): WIC is a nutrition education program serving income eligible pregnant and postpartum women, infants to age one, and children to age 5. The program provides nutrition and breastfeeding edu-cation, health referrals, and vouchers for supplemental foods. MAC (Mothers and Children): MAC provides commodity food items to income eligible children ages 5 to 6 and non-breastfeeding women 6 to 12 months postpartum. Car Seat Program: Medica and Blue Plus have a car seat program for children under 2. Education and installation of the car seat are offered to any resident of Becker County. Child & Teen Checkups (C & TC): Child and Teen Checkups are offered to any Becker County resident under the age of 21. Checkups include: hearing and vision screening, developmental screening, physical exam, lead screening, immunizations and referrals to other health care providers as necessary. Dental Varnishing: Dental varnishing is offered to children 0-3 years of age. Immunizations: Infant, child and adult immunizations can be done at Becker County Community Health by appointment. Follow Along Program: The Follow Along Program consists of a series of developmental questionnaires the parent completes and returns to Becker County Community Health. The questionnaire is scored and a letter is sent to the parent with the results. This program is free to all children in Becker County under the age of 36 months.

Family Planning: This program offers free or reduced confidential educa-tion and information on all methods of contraception to any Becker County resident. A physical exam with a mid-level provider and a 1 year supply of contraceptive method of choice will be provided. Pregnancy Testing: Pregnancy testing is available to all Becker County residents for a minimal donation. Health Promotion and Wellness Activity: Numerous health topics and wellness activities can be provided to various groups and individuals in Becker County.

Community Based Services Long Term Care Consultation: Screening provided by a Public Health Nurse to determine appropriate home based plan of care versus facility placement. Case Management: Ongoing communication with client and providers to ensure appropriate service delivery, medical follow through and client advo-cacy. Disease Prevention & Control: Ongoing education, outreach and surveil-lance of communicable diseases under the direction of the Minnesota Depart-ment of Health. Emergency Preparedness/Bioterrorism: Collaborative effort to address potential county-wide natural or manmade disasters and disease outbreaks. PCA Assessments: Public Health Nurses assess eligible clients for services of a personal care assistant. This is a Medical Assistance program under the Department of Human Services. Public Nuisance: Community Health Nurses perform general public nui-sance assessments and refer to appropriate governing agency. Nutrition Education: Nurses provide nutrition education to various groups and individuals throughout the community to promote healthy nutrition and prevention of obesity and related conditions. Flu Clinics: Community Health provides numerous public health flu clinics throughout the county. NAPS Program (Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors): Community Health facilitates referrals of eligible seniors for a monthly food distribution program that is administered jointly with Mahube Community Action Council. Health Promotion and Wellness Activities: Numerous health topics and wellness activities can be provided to various groups and individuals through-out the county.

The Community Caregivers-Faith in Action Volunteer Program provides assistance to elderly and disabled in Becker County through a network of volunteers, congregations, and agencies. Volunteers benefit from training and ongoing support, and enjoy an opportunity to develop and express their spirituality through engaging in meaningful service to others. The program is provided through donations to the Emmanuel Foundation, and through United Way. There is no fee for assistance. The Senior Companion Program provides assistance to help frail, eld-erly and disabled adults in Becker County to stay at home. Companions are over the age of 60, and “do what friends do for friends.” The program is provided in partnership with Becker County, Lutheran Social Services, and the United Way, and through donations to the Emmanuel Foundation. A fee may apply. Community Support Systems and Caregiver Coaching Program pro-vide wellness education, strength based counseling and support groups including Alzheimer’s, Arthritis, and Parkinson’s. Support groups meet regularly at Emmanuel Community and are free of charge. The Chronic Care Concierge is an intervention and assistance pro-gram which provides adults with complex chronic care needs assistance in managing care and gaps across different health care settings. The focus is to keep seniors healthy longer by efficiently managing their chronic conditions using proven methods, education and standards of care which reduces nursing home stays, hospitalization and allows seniors to remain at home with less expensive supportive services. The Community Homemaking program (218-844-7154) provides meal preparation, routine household assistance, shopping, and general support to individuals living within ten miles of Detroit Lakes.

The site will then take you through the checkout process. ■ Submit a Story Idea: We are always open to story ideas and end up pursuing many of them. You may stop by our offi ce, call or email Nathan Bowe at [email protected] or contact anyone at the newspaper.

■ Obtain Back Issues: Back issues of the newspaper may be purchased by stopping at our offi ce. Limited quantities are available for a limited time.

■ Publicize an Event: To publicize a public event, please send the information about the event and your contact information to our news editor Pippi Mayfi eld at pmayfi [email protected], drop off the information at our offi ce, fax it to 218-847-9409 or submit it online at DL-Online.com. The section your event will be published in is called “Happenings.” You may also purchase an ad in the Entertainment section. Call or email [email protected] or any of the sales representatives.

■ Locate a Specifi c Story That Has Been Published: To locate a recent specifi c story, you may go to our website and search for it in the search box at the top of the page. If you would like a hard copy of the story, one may be picked up at our offi ce if we know what date it was published. If it is an older story, the Becker County Historical Society has the newspaper on microfi lm dating back to the late 1800s.

If the birth takes place at a different hospital, there is a form on our website that may be fi lled out and submitted for publishing.

■ Submit a Legal Notice: The Detroit Lakes Tribune and the Becker County Record are our two legal publications. Legals can be emailed to [email protected] or they can be faxed or dropped off at our offi ce. The deadline for the Tribune is Monday at 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. for the Record.
