Whale Watchers Wanted

Each year from about the start of June – October, Southern Right Whales return to their nursery at Logan’s Beach to give birth and raise their calves.

The DEPI are seeking whale watching volunteers so that we can kick off to a good start of the season. For you marine biologists, volunteer work is of high priority and this definitely looks good on your resume!

All that’s required of you is to attend a training session (2nd of June or Friday 6th of June at the Logans Beach platform), look for whales with your buddy and record the data (very straight forward data sheets).

If you’re interested, I need to know who you’d like to work with (can be as many people as you’d like, but there must be at least two of you) and your availability (one day/week is fine).

Training days at Logans beach platform (sign up essential

World No Tobacco Day – May 31st

Every year on 31 May, WHO and partners mark World No Tobacco Day, this day highlights the health risks associated with tobacco use and advocates for effective policies to reduce tobacco consumption. Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600 000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke, this year the campaign is focussing on raising tobacco related taxes.

Deakin University is now Smoke Free, this means that students and staff cannot smoke on campus (residences is exempt at this point), we need to remind people that they must move off campus to smoke to ensure that all people can enjoy a smoke free environment when walking around the campus.

There are activities planned for next week on each campus in the lead up to World No Tobacco Day and we are asking students to Take the Pledge and make our campuses healthier.

If you are considering quitting but need to talk to someone the campus nurses at Deakin Medical Centre are QUIT Educators and are more than happy to provide free, non-judgemental appointments to work with you on the quit journey.

QUITTING IS HARD

Our campuses might have gone smoke free, but for us humanoids the transition is a little more difficult.

There's the physical and emotional addiction, pressure from friends and family, not to mention the stigma proliferated through traditional and social media.

You are not without help, the University has various programs and initiatives to help staff who are wanting to quit.

Our Medical Centres are offering FREE cessation support, including quit counselling and Nicotine Replacement Therapy, which you can book online.

We will also be celebrating World No Tobacco Day, but taking it to the next level with No Tobacco Week @ Deakin. There'll be food, massages, giveaways and loads of health information, so head down to see what's it's all about between 12-2pm at:

• Warrnambool - Wednesday 28 May

Also, check out Rebecca Plant's quit journey via her blog, 40yearoldsmoker. As our Deakin quit ambassador, Rebecca has been documenting her 'warts and all' experience. Check it out if you would like to offer some support or advice, or to see what you're in for on your own quit journey.

Question, comments, or advice? Please let us know at [email protected]

FREE Nicotine Replacement Therapy available at Deakin

Not too many students are aware that the Medical centres on campus can provide FREE Nicotine Replacement Therapies including, gum, lozenges, patches and spray. NRT is not for everyone wishing to QUIT but for those people who wish to manage cravings and work towards quitting, they can be very helpful. Make an appointment online to see the Campus Nurse or drop into Student Life to have a chat, all the Campus nurses are QUIT Educators and we can provide support and information to assist you, we provide a non-judgemental and supportive approach.

Become a Smoke-free Ambassador

WANTED! Enthusiastic supporters of the Deakin Smoke-Free Policy to become ambassadors. We are looking for people who can fill one of two ambassador positions:

1. First is a paid position where the ambassadors are required to work for 1 hour 3 days a week for 12 weeks. They will be paid $250 onto their Deakin card and they will receive a certificate acknowledging their support. These ambassadors will be required to wear a Deakin Smoke-Free t-shirt whilst on campus and in groups of 2 will politely approach anyone they see smoking. They'll also be provided with merchandise to hand out to anyone who wants to show their support. Essentially, they will be our eyes and noses whilst creating a "presence" on campus to help us promote and enforce the Smoke-Free policy.

2. The second position is a volunteer position for those who aren’t able to make this time commitment. We would require volunteers to help out with events such as open day and world tobacco free day. While you won't get paid, it will certainly be a great addition to your CV!

We also ask that the ambassadors help us come up with different and engaging ways to promote the Smoke-Free policy. All ambassadors will receive training. Dates haven’t been set but we are aiming to run it in the week of May 19th.

If this is something that interests you, could you please email Rachel Isaacs at [email protected] detailing what your background is (i.e. what you’re studying) and what sort of experience you could bring to the position? Also please confirm which campus you’re primarily based at.
