What is Big 6?

The Big6 is a process model of how people of all ages solve an information problem. (Jansen 2009) This process encompasses six stages.

What are the 6 stages?

1. Task Definition:

2. Information Seeking Strategies:

3. Location & Access:

4. Use of Information:

5. Synthesis:

6. Evaluation:

Page 4: Research=Big 6!

Huh…Show me!

1. Task Definition:

• What do we need to do?– Define the problem– Identify the information

needed

What does that look like?

Page 5: Research=Big 6!

Show me more…

2. Information Seeking Strategies

• What can we use to find what we need?– Determine all possible

sources– Select the best sources

What does that look like?

Page 6: Research=Big 6!

More more…

3. Location & Access

• Where can we find what we need?– Locate sources– Find information within

sources

What does that look like?

Page 7: Research=Big 6!

Ohhh…I’m getting it

4. Use of information

• What information can we use?– Engage (e.g., read, hear,

view, touch)– Extract needed information

What does that look like?

Page 8: Research=Big 6!

There is more!

5. Synthesis

• How can we show what we learned?– Organize Information– Present the result

What does this look like?

Page 9: Research=Big 6!

Last but not least

6. Evaluation

• How will we know if we did well?– Judge the result

(effectiveness)– Judge the process

(efficiency)

What does it look like?
