The University of Rostock is not only the oldest university in the Baltic Sea region, but also the richest in tradition. Founded in 1419, it looks back on a longstanding history of teaching and research and celebrates its 600th anniversary. The University of Rostock (www.uni-rostock.de) consists of nine traditional faculties and an additionel Interdisciplinary Fa-culty (INF). The Interdisciplinary Faculty unities scientists and students of all disciplines in four major departments: ‘Life, Light and Matter‘, ‘Maritime Systems‘, ‘Ageing of the Individuals and of Society‘, and ‘Knowledge - Culture - Transformation‘. The-se departments represent the key research areas that have developed throughout the long tradition of the University, and contribute to honing the University’s profile through connecting its strengths by means of interdisciplinary and cross-curricular cooperation. Offering more than 150 courses of study (36 bachelor degree courses, 56 master degree courses and 37 state examination courses including teaching degrees), the University of Rostock is one of Germany‘s Universities with the widest range of aca-demic subjects. Beyond that, its Centre for Teacher Taining and Educational Research conducts research on education and works on improving the quality of teacher training.

Through its underlying principle of institutionalized inter-dis-ciplinary cooperation, the University of Rostock uses the full potential of its wide range of human, natural and engineering disciplines in research and teaching and thus achieves innova-tive research results and gains international recognition. The University of Rostock focuses on promoting the next generation of scientist and thus encourages its students in their indepen-dence and individual responsibility during their studies, as well as it involves them in research activities from an early stage of their academic career. Moreover, the university fosters lifelong learning and therefore provides diverse open accesses to uni-versity education.Within its international orientation, the University of Rostock re-cognizes itself as particularly integrated in the Baltic Sea region and is therefore commited to its obligation to the continued de-velopment of this surrounding region. The University of Rostock advocates for tolerance, equal opportunities and family friend-liness as well as it acknowledges its leadership principles. Research, teaching and studying at the University of Rostock should serve peaceful purposes, enhance coexistance of peo-ple, and uphold the principle of sustainability when using finite natural resources.
