Who's Who In Innovation Management Technology

Carol Rozwell, Kathy Harris, Mary Mesaglio

Innovation management technology has transformed from tools to collect ideas, to platforms that support collaborative and open innovation methods. We outline how this technology is used and describe some of the vendors delivering this capability.

Key Findings

Innovation is supported by a wide range of processes including ideation, collaborative and open innovation.

Innovation management technology supports early stage activities, such as idea generation, evaluation and selection, as well as later stage activities such as innovation portfolio management.

This research shows how little difference there is in basic features offered by vendors, but some important differences in geographic and industry focus, and compatibility with other platforms.

Recommendations

Choosing technology to support innovation is the last step in developing a better innovation management capability. Before selecting any technology, determine program goals and define processes for idea collection, evaluation and selection.

Consider also using use cases or scenarios that describe how you want processes to work when choosing innovation management vendors rather than relying solely on checklists to gather requirements.

ANALYSIS

1.0 Market Overview — From Idea Management to Collaborative Innovation

This document was revised on 20 August 2010. For more information, see the Corrections page on gartner.com.

Innovation technology has evolved, along with the recognition that organizations need to continually innovate and that innovation is not the sole domain of R&D (see "Five Myths of Innovation, 2010 Update"). Techniques and practices formerly delivered by consultants are now available as off-the-shelf applications that support sophisticated innovation processes.

Early idea management tools focused on the collection and prioritization of ideas. The value proposition was the improvement gained by using tools designed for this purpose instead of e-mail, electronic "suggestion boxes" or spreadsheets. Investing in these applications made sense for organizations that created innovation programs, ran multiple innovation campaigns and were collecting hundreds or thousands of ideas.

As organizations' experience with ideation increased, it also became apparent that a richer stream of ideas resulted when people had the opportunity to see, comment on and refine the submissions of others. This collaborative approach to innovation also produced a more valuable outcome. Mechanisms to rate and rank ideas were added to the technology so innovation program leaders could not only tap employees for their ideas, but also involve them in determining which ideas are most promising. In today's innovation management tools, analytics and reporting are also improved and social software features have made innovation process even more collaborative.

Gartner expects that vendors will continue to build out their capability to perform detailed analyses of idea proposals. This will make it easier to evaluate individual proposals as well as to assess the organization's innovation project portfolio for balance and risk. Vendors will also make it easier to link the early stages of innovation to the new product development process, or other later stage activities.

2.0 Innovation Management Vendors

This research covers selected vendors offering technology support for innovation management and specifically for the idea generation and evaluation phases of the innovation process. The functionality supported may include activities described in various ways: in the innovation realm, it is most often termed idea management, but in other work settings, this technology enables functions with other titles including "suggestion box" support and business improvement or product development ideas.

Three categories of vendors provide innovation and idea management technology. The categories are:

Innovation management vendors with products designed to support idea generation, evaluation and selection processes and some aspects of innovation portfolio management (see "Managing Innovation: A Primer, 2009 Update" for a description of the full innovation management process).

Social software vendors with innovation modules that allow community members to engage in the ideation process.

Publication Date: 16 August 2010/ID Number: G00205262 Page 4 of 29

Product life cycle management vendors with functionality to enable the early stages of new product development such as ideation.

There are 15 vendors included in this research document — 11 are in the innovation management category, three in the social software category and one is in the product life cycle management category. This represents an evolution in idea management technology. Tools used to be offered as stand-alone applications. As market demand has increased and idea management is understood to be a process that requires collaboration, social software vendors are adding ideation modules to their offerings.

Organizations that intend to create an ongoing capacity for innovation will continue to select robust idea management offerings from vendors with an established track record. Those that want to capitalize on an employee's good idea will seek tools that are accessible from the enterprise collaboration platform.

Description: EnterpriseSpigit integrates social collaboration with traditional idea management workflow and analytics. With Spigit for SharePoint, companies have a centralized location within SharePoint where ideas can be created, shared, discussed and evaluated. Ideas go through multiple stages. Each stage has its own criteria for advancement to the next stage: crowdsourced signals (votes, comments, views, and analytics), formal reviews and role-based approvals.

What's interesting about Spigit?

Spigit's reputation measuring system, RepUrank, computes interaction among community members to evaluate people and ideas independent of existing ties. This allows the best ideas and people to surface, not just those that are the most popular. In addition to idea management, PredictionSpigit can be used to capture the different knowledge and perspectives from communities to forecast the outcome of events.
