PRINCIPAL REPORT
Welcome back to the start of Term 2. I have been
extremely impressed with how students have dived
back into their learning and, more importantly, given
their best effort. We have started the term by
outlining our expectations for learning and making
sure students are providing us with evidence of their
learning that is of their highest quality. For some
students, we are providing opportunities for them to
continue to work during lunch. This is a support
structure that has been put in place and not a
detention. At times, without extra instruction and
help, students won’t master or understand a learning
concept. We are asking students to take this
opportunity to improve and grow their literacy and numeracy skills.
Reports Our first term ‘Progress Report’ was sent home at
the end of Term 1. The report is aimed to give
parents an indication of how students have started the
year. If parents have any concerns from their child’s
report, we urge you to contact the relevant teacher.
At the end of this term, we will be sending home a
comprehensive midyear report, where you will receive written comments and ratings for all subject
areas.
PRINCIPAL’S REPORT continued
Anzac Day One of our important school values, helping us to shape how we act at Latrobe High School, is respect.
Parents and the school community should be very pleased with the amount of students who attended
Anzac services at Latrobe, Port Sorell and surrounding areas. I would like to thank Trent Williams for
presenting his speech at the Latrobe Service. Trent played an important role in educating the community
about Anzac Day.
Mainland Experience During the first weekend of the school holidays, a group of students and five staff embarked on the Spirit
of Tasmania to spend three days in Melbourne. The students and staff had a wonderful time, where they
experienced the sights and opportunities that Melbourne has to offer. It was lovely to hear about the trip
where staff described students as independent, patient and mature. I would like to thank Ms Leonard and
Mrs Holloway who spent hours planning and organising the trip.

MELBOURNE EXPERIENCE
On Friday 13 April, 31 students boarded the Spirit of Tasmania for an overnight sailing to Melbourne.
Bright and early Saturday morning we disembarked the Spirit and took the bus to our accomodation, the
YHA. After we dropped our bags we walked around the Victoria market and then headed to the mall for
some shopping time. In the afternoon we went to a football match and watched Richmond defeat
Brisbane. We then walked to the Regent Theatre to see ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’, which was an
amazing experience and the highlight of our trip. We then headed back to the YHA for a well deserved
rest.
Sunday was another early morning where we headed off to Artvo. This is a fun experience where you
are able to become apart of a large 3D painting, the rest of the morning was finished with some shopping
at Harbour Town DFO. Sunday afternoon we watched another football match, Hawthorn vs Melbourne,
with Hawthorn playing taking out the win.
Monday morning we packed ready for our trip home, we walked to the IMAX theatre to watch a 3D film.
We managed to squeeze in a final bit of shopping at South Wharf DFO and then made our way to the
boat for an overnight sailing back to Devonport.
It was great to see so many friendships being made with students and teachers on the trip. Even though
the weather wasn’t at its best its fair to say everyone had a fantastic time. On behalf of the students that
went along we would like to thank Mrs Cadle, Ms Leonard, Mrs Holloway, Mrs Padman and Mr
Lawson for making the trip successful and enjoyable!

GRADE 8 REPORT
Welcome back to Term 2! It was fantastic hearing all the stories from the school holidays with many
families relaxing and recuperating, recharging their batteries for another successful term. There were also
some lucky families who were able to experience some international culture with the UK, the USA and
the nearby island countries visited by our Grade 8 peers. Teachers in Grade 8 are starting to look at the
half yearly reports and encourage conversation at home to focus on work ethic and organisational skills.
As mentioned in the past newsletter, talking to your child in regards to their progress and trying to set
SMART (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevance, Time Frame) goals before the reports are sent
home in June. These goals could be looking at one criteria, such as organisation, and setting a goal to
achieve ‘good’ by remembering homework, pencil case, diary and a change of clothes when required to
class.
The start of Term 2 also meant that the junior school started their new taster. They will remain in this
rotation until June 20. Classes will now have the following: 8A - Drama, 8B - Music, 8C - Cooking,
8D - Art and 8E - MDT.
There are two major events booked in for Grade 8’s this term with the school cross country on May 23
(map in the HPE report) and the school social. The theme will be announce closer to the date and as
previous attendees can attest, is always a great night!

GRADE 9 REPORT
Next week there are a number of important events occurring for Grade 9 students. NAPLAN testing is
happening on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. NAPLAN tests are a very important occasion for
students to show the growth they have made over the past two years since the last time they were
tested. In the areas of literacy and numeracy students are tested against national standards and all
students should strive to achieve their best results. I encourage all parents to talk with their children
about the importance of ‘best effort’ which is part of the school motto. To demonstrate the gains in
learning they have made over the past two years students need to take the tests very seriously.
On Friday 18 May, the Grade 9 year group will head to Burnie for a convention titled ‘Creating My
Career.’ On Wednesday students signed up to an area that they have interest in. They will get the
opportunity to find out more about certain industries from professionals employed within the industry.
This relates well to the ‘My Education’ component of Term 2 that all Grade 9 students will focus on.
Each student will complete surveys and activities based on informing them about further education and
career opportunities, as well as creating a quality résumé.
If you have any concerns or enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me on 64261061 or email on
Kind regards

HPE HOTSHOT MAY 9
With our upcoming Cross Country carnival coming up, the
HPE team would like to showcase our new and improved
cross country course. Feedback from previous carnivals was
the lack of atmosphere in comparison to our Big Day Out
carnival and our Athletics carnival, so a change to Bells
Parade will enable us to provide a positive atmosphere for
all. The new course also aligns with similar courses found at
state and national cross country meets.
The new course also eliminates all road crossings which
ensures a safer environment for our students. A free BBQ
for all students will be available post event and parents and
friends are of course most welcome. There will also be a
coffee van (Hotshots Coffee)!
Students will complete their Block 1 class before walking
down (in Home Room groups) to Bells Parade. All students
will assemble, start and finish near the rotunda near the
playground. Students will depart at approximately 2:00pm
before arriving back at school ready to go home.
The race distances are as follows:
Grade 7 & 8 boys – 3.8km; ALL girls – 3.8km; Grade 9 & 10 boys- 5.4km (students will complete same
course as everyone else, but instead of finishing, run back towards the Axeman’s and continue on the
course (not completing Pig Island for a second time) before finishing; All runners will receive a minimum 3
points for participating. The walking group will walk 2km and score 1 participant point for their house.
All students are completing some great runs and walks during their Physical Education lessons. Last week
students completed a spoke run, which is a run which has students run out to a point and return and was
1.7km a lap. This week, students have been completing their races distances to ensure they are ready to
run out the distance in two weeks’ time. Next week will be the continuous block run and we look
forward to seeing some amazing results.
AUSTRALIAN ALL SCHOOLS TRIATHLON
FESTIVAL
During the school holidays, Jonte (Grade 9, pictured middle)
represented Tasmania at the Australian All Schools Triathlon Festival in Penrith, NSW.
Jonte participated in the aquathon event which was a 300m swim
followed by a 2km run. Jonte was 8th out of the water and after a
rapid transition ran himself to the Australian championship
winning by 40 seconds!
Congratulations Jonte on your performance!!
BACK TO THE 80’S…THE TOTALLY AWESOME MUSICAL!
During Term One, the Production crew, (made up of approximately 78 students) has been working very
hard, as they begin to learn choreography, lines and song lyrics. All students should have a script and a
rehearsal CD. It would be great if parents could help their children learn lines, and watch them when
they ask to show off their dancing skills. All students need to continually practise!!!
If students would like to purchase a Production hoodie, both payment and the order form, need to be
returned by Wednesday 23 May.
