‘Iolani School's Response to COVID-19On March 16, 2020 ‘Iolani shifted to a distance-learning model to protect the community. Students utilized their school-issued iPads to learn from home, and the school year was completed with grades issued according to traditional polices. The 2020-21 school year began in distance learning mode, but shifted back to in-person instruction on September 25. Despite being able to learn from home, students and families experienced some challenges, including: • Financial hardship due to halt of tourism – in response the school increased the financial aid budget and awarded aid to

more families (28% of all families now receive financial assistance) • Cancellation/postponement of spring and fall sports seasons and all arts performances • Spring 2020 AP examinations administered extremely early in the morning • In-person instruction requires students and faculty to wear face shields and masks throughout the school day

Additionally, ‘Iolani School supported the island of O‘ahu by producing over 16,000 face shields in the Sullivan Center for Innovation and Leadership. These shields were provided to first responders and care-givers in the community, and to other schools on the island.
