March 29, 2015

Project: 0661-030-737, P101 UPC #: 100549 From: 0.095 mi. E. of Rte. 1060 To: Rte. 1070

Length: 0.16 mi. To: Culpeper District Location & Design Subject: Soil Survey Report, Route 661 Schoolhouse Road, Fauquier County This soil survey report is based on a total of seven (7 ) soil borings performed on March 9, 2015. The borings were extended to a maximum depth of 5.0 feet below existing surface elevations. The purpose of the project is to improve or change the alignment of Route 661 without added capacity. According to Integrated Project Management (IPM) system information, the project is currently scheduled for construction November 2016.

Soil Description, Groundwater & Observations Below the existing pavement structure, strata described and/or classified as clay (CL) was encountered. Auger refusal, possibly indicating the top of rock, was encountered at boring location B-5 at approximately 4.0 feet below the existing surface elevation. Groundwater was not encountered. Descriptions of strata are provided on the attached boring logs. Existing Pavement Structure

At the boring locations, the existing pavement structure consisted of asphalt concrete layers ranging between 4.0 and 8.0 inches and underlying base type aggregate ranging between 4.0 and 6.0 inches. The pavement structure material thicknesses are show on the attached boring logs.

Pavement Structure Recommendations

New Pavement – Route 661 Mainline

For Surface: Use 1.5 inches of Asphalt Concrete, Type SM-9.5A. For Base: Use 4.0 inches of Asphalt Concrete, Type BM-25.0A. For Subbase: Use 6.5 inches of Aggregate Base, Type I, Size No. 21-B.

Existing Pavement – Route 661 Mainline

Mill 1.5 inches and replace with 1.5 inches Asphalt Concrete, Type SM-9.5A. The AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures (1993) was used to determine the pavement structure recommendations above (new pavement and overlay). A 20-year design life, 6,000 psi subgrade resilient modulus, assumed 2.0% growth rate and traffic data obtained from VDOT Traffic Engineering Division (Year 2013, Jurisdiction Report 030) were used for calculations of new pavement structure design. A 10-year design life was used for the overlay design. Existing paved shoulder areas that will be exposed to long-term or post-construction mainline traffic should be demolished and replaced with new mainline pavement structure. UD-4 edge-drain and CD-2 under-drain should be constructed per VDOT Road and Bridge Standards with positive drainage to outlet pipes and daylight points. In lieu of edge-drain, pavement structure drainage can be provided by day-lighting the aggregate subbase. For crown sections, edge-drain should be placed along both sides of the pavement structure and along the low side, only, for super-elevated sections. Earthwork & Materials Recommendations

Regular Excavation & Borrow

Soils from the planned regular excavation can be used for fill and backfill. Borrow soils should have a minimum CBR value of 5.0, maximum Liquid Limit (LL) of 45 and maximum plasticity index of 20. Highly plastic clay was encountered and may need significant manipulation in order to achieve the moisture content(s) required for adequate compaction. It is recommended that the Contractor plan for having equipment available to disc and till the soils. Slopes

All cut and fill slopes should be no steeper than a ratio of 2 horizontal to 1 vertical (2H:1V).

Shrinkage Estimate

Use 15.0% shrinkage factor for earthwork volume computations (borrow and regular excavation).

Topsoil Use 6.0-inch depth for calculation of topsoil removal. Ditch lines, and other areas where soil and debris can accumulate, may need to be considered with, or part of, topsoil removal in fill areas.

Rock Auger refusal was encountered at boring location B-5 at approximately 4.0 feet below the existing surface elevation and may indicate the tope of rock. Based on comparison of the planned cut depths with the auger refusal elevation, rock excavation is not anticipated. Auger refusal was not encountered at any of the other boring locations. Unsuitable Subgrade Soil material unsuitable for proposed subgrade was not encountered within the borings. Source of Materials

Aggregates

Two sources for aggregate material, located within the Culpeper District and near to the project location, are provided below along with recent test results data of selected products.

Luck Stone – Bealton

Aggregate Base Material, Type I, Size No. 21-A – maximum dry density 163.5 lbs. /cu. ft. at 4.6% optimum moisture content. Aggregate Base Material, Type I, Size No. 21-B – maximum dry density 161.9 lbs. / cu. ft. at 4.7% optimum moisture content.

Vulcan Materials - Warrenton

Aggregate Base Material, Type I, Size No. 21-A – maximum dry density 137.7 lbs. / cu. ft. at 5.9% optimum moisture content. Aggregate Base Material, Type I, Size No. 21-B – maximum dry density 138.3 lbs. / cu. ft. at 5.6% optimum moisture content.

For Open-Graded Aggregate, Size No. 57, a unit weight of 105.0 lbs. / cu. ft. is recommended for quantity calculations.
