Replacement of the SKF AquaMax VKPC 83644 water pump
As you can see from picture 1, the water pump for the vehicle applications below is a relatively simple design, however it is important that vehicle manufacturing fitting guidelines are always followed.
Special tools recommended by the vehicle manufacturer are:
• Camshafttiming/lockingpin.• Flywheeltiming/lockingpin.• Timingbeltretainingclip.

The cooling system is one of the most critical operating systems in a modern automobile. If it fails, the car will breakdown and this can result in extensive engine damage. This bulletin will provide you with the recommended steps for installing a new water pump on the below listed 1.1 and 1.4 petrol engines applications, minimising the risk of early failure.
Always install the belt, tensioner, and the water pump, as a complete kit.Toonlyreplacethetimingsystem and not the pump is false economy, and will only lead to further repairs due to damage caused by the bearing, and or seal failure of the water pump!

Replacement guidelines for SKF AquaMax VKPC 83644 water pump
Note: ALWAYSfollowworkshophealth&safetyprocedureswhencarryingoutrepairs.

1. Follow the vehicle manufacturer guidelines for replacement of the water pump and timing system, ensuring that the engine is securely supported before removing the right hand enginemount.
2. After securing the engine; rotate the crankshaftinthecorrectdirectionfortheengine,andinsertthecamshaftandcrankshaftlockingpins(Camshaftlockingshownbelow).
3. Loosenthetensionerretainingnut,slackentheadjusterusingthecorrectsizeallenkeyandremovethetimingbelt.
4. Remove the tensioner and water pump, ensuring that the pump and tensioner mounting area is thoroughly cleaned.
5. Install the tensioner; ensuring that the placement ‘legs’ are correctly positioned on the engineblockcasting.
6. When mounted, turn the adjuster anti-clockwise,untiltheallenkeyfittingisbetweenthe 12:00 and 1:00 o-clockposition.
Secure the tensioner retainingnutat10Nm.
7. Thewaterpumpfitmentissimple,aslongas the technician follows the correct installationprocedure.
•Fittherubber‘O-ring’onthepump(NOgasketpasteisrequired)andinstallthepumpintotheengineopening.EnsurethatthepumpisfullyseatedandNOTmountedat an angle!
8. OnceagainCHECKthatthepumpmountingfaceisflushwiththeengineblock.Torquethetwomountingboltsto14Nm,startingwiththeupperboltandthenthelowerbolt.Refitthetimingbelt,startingatthecrankshaftsprocket(Checktherotationalarrowsonthebeltforthecorrectdirection).
9. Whilst maintaining tight tension between the crankshaftandthecamshaftsprocket;Fitthebeltinthefollowingorder-Camshaftsprocket,waterpumpandthenthetensioner.Recheckthetimingandbeltdirectionalarrows.
10. Removealllockingpinsandretainingclips.RotatetheengineinaCLOCKWISEdirectionatotalof10times.Resetthetimingandinsertthetiminglockingpins.Usinganallenkey,setthe tensioner, by turning the adjustment dial until the moving pointer is aligned with the notchonthetensionermountingplate.Whilst holding the adjustment hub in position with the allen key-torquetheretaining nut to 21 Nm.Removealllockingpinsandrotatethe engine 2 times in a clockwisedirection.Again,reinsertthelockingpins - the tension is correct if the pointer is aligned with the notch in the tensioner base plate.Ifthepointerisnotaligned,theproceduremustbestartedagain.

Refitallcomponentsinreverseorderofremoval.
Finger tighten the upper, and lower retainingbolts.
