The North Channel Healthy Kids Com- munity Challenge was on hand this past Saturday at the Bruce Mines Fall Fair, with their “Fruit and Veggie Scavenger Hunt.” The hunt, open to chil- dren all along the North Shore from ages 5 to 12 years, had many fun activities to encourage kids to discover fruits and veggies and promote a healthy lifestyle. Upon arrival, children were given tote bags to collect goodies along their hunt. Tables were set up with activities such as puzzles, cooking demon- strations and dress up. There was even boothes handing out refreshing water and a fun Healthy Kids mascot, named Freggie, there to engage the young and old alike. At the end of the scavenger hunt, participants were encouraged to fill their tote bags to the brim from a row of tables filled with many fruit and vegetable options. It was Healthy Kids’ third year participating in the fall fair. Flycatcher

Perhaps you’ve heard some unexpected knocking at your back door, or on windows where no person should be? Well it’s not a person, it’s a bird. A bird that is both helpful and annoying. They are Flycatch-er birds. The little birds fly so close to the windows to catch insects that sometimes their wings hit the windows - they don’t get hurt though. We have about 8 or so around our house and we’ve never seen one get knocked out fortunately. What species they are is difficult to tell, with many similar in the Empidonax genious. According to All About Birds, species in the genus Empidonax look very similar—voice, range, and habitat can be more useful than appearance when separating them. Individuals that don’t call may need to be left unidentified, even by experts.

As annoying as these guys can get, we genuinely thought someone was knocking on our back door one very early morning. They are doing us a service, as every bug they eat is one less that will fly in when we open the door.

Like many of the local birds, these guys will soon be headed south for winter migration. At least when they are gone, the flies will be too.

St. Joseph IslandMuseum Moment

Our Canada 150 project that we started in July during our Heritage Day event is complete! We asked individuals to join us and create their very own memory tile in celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.

Diana Madill created the concept and we are so grateful that she was able to do this for us. After the tiles had dried Diana came back to the museum to secure the heavier items by sewing them to the tile, as well she added each artist’s name to the front of each tile. Now after all of that was complete the hard part was yet to come, trying to put them all together to create a harmonious collage. After many hours arrang-ing and rearranging we were satisfied with the result. The historical time capsule collage as we affectionately named it is now on permanent display at the museum inside the church. I invite everyone to come and admire the beauty we have created by using only a few items such as foam core, some paint and a bunch of nick-nacks. Each one is different and unique! Again a big thank you to those that came out to cre-ate their very own masterpiece and especially to Diana Madill, thank you for coming up with this unique concept that fits into our historical setting just perfectly. As well as the many hours you volunteered to make it complete.

Remember the museum is still open until the end of the month 10am-5pm daily, closed Tues-days.

Weekly Book Reviewby Tracy Howson

Europe on a Shoestring: big trips on small budgets (8th Edition)Written and Published by the Lonely Planet (2013)(1258 pages)

Europe on a Shoestring is a hefty resource that takes you through 41 countries. Lonely Planet staff visit the places they write about and attempt to provide the best planning advice and local se-crets. The Lonely Planet company began in 1972 with the adventures of a young, travel hungry, cash poor couple, and it has now grown to over 600 employees with offices around the world.

This particular resource from the Lonely Plan-et provides detailed information that might be helpful in planning a trip through Europe. They recommend 24 top experiences. They also provide six itineraries in case you would like some guid-ance. For example, if you are a first time traveler to Europe they suggest a six-week Itinerary that starts in Rome, then to Florence, and Venice then on to Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Britain. You might also consider a four-week jaunt through Mediterranean Europe or one or two months through the Alps to the Iberian Peninsula.

If you want to make your own itinerary, the re-source lists European counties alphabetically, from Albania to the Ukraine.

Even if you never plan to travel or go to Europe, this massive missive, with a little imagination, can provide some engrossing armchair travel. You might want to combine your armchair travel with some digging into your own history by speaking with Melanie Dorscht about the Hilton library’s subscription to Ancestry.ca.

By the time you peruse this book, you might be inspired to leave the arm chair, pick up, and go.

The only criticisms of the book is that I can’t imag-ine actually packing the book to take with you. It is heavy! And, you may need reading glasses. They pack a lot of info into those 1258 pages.

“Europe on a Shoestring” is available at the Hilton Library.

Switchback Returns to Royal Canadian Legion

Award-winning musical duo SWITCHBACK is returning to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 374 in Richards Landing on Thursday, September 21, at 7pm. Switchback’s concerts are always a crowd-pleaser with lots of audience involvement, colorful stories of their travels around the world, and a healthy dose of comedy thrown in for good measure. Working together for over twenty years, Brian FitzGerald and Martin McCormack perform traditional Celtic music and original Folk songs that reflect their Irish heritage and Folk roots. Their harmonies have been compared to famous duos such as the Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel, but their ability to write songs that touch the soul and bring the most diverse audiences together are what truly set them apart from other performers. Show-casing a repertoire ranging from sentimental ballads to blistering rockers, the duo delivers a powerful sound rivaling that of larger ensembles. Social hour and cash bar start at 6pm and concert at 7pm in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 374 hall in Richards Landing. Tickets are available in advance for $15 at Kents Corners and Gardener’s Corner. Tickets at the door are $20. Tickets can also be purchased online for $17 at WayGoodMusic.com.

Board Game Night coming to Richards Landing

In an age of online video games, 3D movies, and virtual reality it’s surpris-ing to find the lowly board game is on a meteoric rise. Those stationary bits of cardboard, plastic, and cards have been growing year over year for the past decade, helping push the Hobby Gaming industry to $880+ million USD annu-ally.

“Without a doubt, we are in the middle of the golden age of board games,” says Nick Meenachan, founder of the YouTube channel Board Game Brawl (25k subscribers). So is this just more copies of Yahtzee or Monopoly being sold?!

“No. It’s a new kind of board game called Euro-style or Eurogame now becoming popular in North America,” says Thomas Henshell, former owner of the board game store Hobby Kingdom in southern Ontario for 10 years before moving to St. Joe last year.

“There is a preconception board games are for kids. It makes sense: classics like Clue, Battleship, and Game of Life are playable by children and typically sold in store toy departments. But with the English publication of Eurogames, strategy games designed primarily for teens and adults, there is now a vast range of games. It’s sort of like this: imagine if all you saw on TV were kids cartoon shows. It would make sense to dismiss TV as purely for children. But then to discover there are shows like Mur-der She Wrote, or Law & Order, or Game of Thrones there is a sudden realization ‘Wow TV is for adults too!’ Games like Ticket to Ride, Catan, and Dominion are good exam-ples of games already popular with adults on the island.”But in an increasingly digital world, why would someone put down the smartphone and pick up a small wooden figure called a ‘Meeple’? Wouldn’t this gaming go digital?“It’s about connectedness”, Thomas says. “Social media, ironically, isn’t social at all: seeing someone’s vacation photos isn’t the same as having a conversation over tea. Board games provide an entertaining, and enriching way to connect with people at a deeper level in just a few hours. I spoke with members of the township and they identified a need for more things to do on the island in fall/winter evenings. Together we’ve decided to start this experiment of a weekly board game Tuesday nights and see how it goes. They are graciously allowing use of the Town Hall to play and I’ll bring the board games and knowledge on how to play. We’ll run the experiment for 8 weeks and to see how it goes. We are starting next week!
