1.45 - 2.15 coAtiNg defectS 101: SolviNg SheAr-relAted iSSueS At the puMp Douglass Weeks, Technical Sales, Tacmina Material flow is an essential part of the coating process. Coating application fluid chemistry ranges from the simple to the exotic to address a product’s needs, and the more exotic the material, the more careful the handling required. When defects such as streaks, clogs, curls, cracking, or material delamination occur, often you are seeing the results of shear.

Shear occurs when a fluid reacts to energy imparted to it by the transfer process. Many coating applications require specialized pumping equipment to handle the material and the requirements of both the coating application and the fluid itself.

This presentation is a 101-level examination of the causes and effects of shear in the coating process, how different pump technologies affect the final application, and potential solutions for avoiding shear defects.

GeorgeM.Orlych,VPofTechnicalOperations,MTIPolyexe Various topics on film extrusion and formulation will be covered from a film manufacturer’s perspective. There will be a general overview of polyolefins and polyolefin nomenclature. Manufacturing precesses of plastic films. Resin and film additives, including colors. Other topics: opacity, storage and weathering of films and corona treatment. 11.45 - 12.15pm Fit-For-purpose creating more value in release liners JaakkoRautalahti,HeadofProductDevelopment,UPMSpecialtyPapers Release liners form the base for many applications in pressure-sensitive field whether it’s labels, tapes or other applications. Typically our industry has relied on a few standard release base materials for various applications. This is obviously a safe approach but there is a lot to gain from new fit-for-purpose solutions. Examples of current fit-for-purpose solutions include down-gauging of liners, engineering of surface coatings and optimizing of base material composition. Fit-for-purpose is not just about creating savings, it’s about finding best value for each end-use. 12.15 - 12.45pm release liner paper: renewable source, recyclable and environmentally sustainable MarceloPeixoto,ManagingPartner,Polpel Since 2008 release liner paper recycling is a reality in Brazil. Through a clean, low cost and effluent free process, Polpel developed a technology able to recycle the release liner paper, transforming it into cellulose pulp.

12.45 - 1.45 luncH 1.45 - 2.15 an eFFicient release liner solution oF grapHic art applications - ccK paper versus pcK paper GunnarSieber,ProductGroupManagerReleaseLiner,Sappi The global graphic arts market is dominated by two paper based release liner solutions: Clay Coated Kraft papers (CCK) and PE Coated papers (PCK). The release liner solutions have to meet the graphic art market demands for good dimensional stability, high internal bond strength, high mechanical strength and excellent lay flat properties. When it comes to market adoption in North America and European markets there are clear differences. In Europe CCK grades are predominantly in use for the graphic arts market whereas the North American market has traditionally relied more on PCK grades. 2.15 - 2.45 pressure sensitive adHesives and adHesive selection criteria IngridBrase,TechnicalMarketStrategist This presentation will provide an outline for key criteria to consider before calling an adhesive supplier for assistance in recommending a pressure sensitive adhesive for a new product. Using this checklist and a approach will enable the product developed to reduce development time by gathering necessary information up front. 2.45 - 3.15 new papermaKing materials For release base papers BobHamilton,President,StirlingConsulting,Inc. That’s because there’s little we conceive that we don’t eventually create. In today’s world, there’s a whole lot of science going on…and little of it will turn out to be fiction. For business leaders, the question is, “How can we peer into the future to see what’s coming so we’re not surprised? How can we see the future before our competitors do? And how can we take control of this future to create competitive advantage.” During this hour long keynote, David Silverstein will introduce the audience to the methods used to anticipate technology trends, how to use these methods to develop new products and processes, and how to manage and protect the intellectual property that results. 5.00 - 5.15 CLOSING REMARKS PRESENTATION: AWA RELEASE LINER INDUSTRy LEADERSHIP AWARD
