    Potassium is important why?

Potassium is a mineral that is essential for the function

of all our cells, tissues and organs in our body.

Substances associated with the electrical charges in the

body, along with sodium, chloride, calcium and

    magnesium.

Potassium also helps muscle contraction, fluid balance

    and maintain the heart rate.

    Potassium Function

Some hormonal factors may play a role in potassium

    homeostasis hormones including insulin

Participates in many metabolic processes, e.g. regulationof protein and glycogen synthesis

Maintance osmotic and acid base balance between intra

    and extra cell

Maintain resting membrane potential (RMP) of cellular

    membrane

    Insulin Secretion by Cell Pancreatic

Insulin secretion by cells depend by three

    main factors: Blood glucose levels

    ATP-sensitive K channels

    Voltage-sensitive Calcium

In the resting cell with normal

    ATP levels, potassium diffuses

    follow concentration gradients

    through the canal Potassium_ATP

If the glucose level increases, increased production of ATP, ATP

    will close the potassium channels,

which causes cell depolarizationFrances M. Ashcroft, The Journal of Clinical Investigation, Volume 115, Number 8 August 2005
