The 28th Annual Dr. Peter Fedi Periodontics Lecture Pamela Zarkowski, MPH, JD, FACD, FACLMLegal and Ethical Issues Important to Periodontal Practice9 A.M. – NOON; CONTINUES 2 – 5 P.M. (6 CDE CREDITS) – DDS, DH, AUX

Every member of the dental team in a periodontal practice must be aware of the ethical and legal principles that guide the delivery of care, record keeping and interactions with patients. Understanding the roles and responsibilities of employers and employees as guided by law creates a supportive work climate. The first half of this presentation will highlight ethical principles that guide patient care. Participants will be introduced to a legal primer that includes provider/patient contractual obligations, intentional and unintentional torts including negligence, the concepts of informed consent and informed refusal, patient abandonment, the importance of record keeping and appropriate termination of patients. Throughout the presentation, risk management strategies will be discussed.

The second half of the presentation will discuss the employer and employee relationship. Each member of the team should be knowledgeable of the rules guiding professional interactions and providing legal protections. Topics discussed will include key federal and state laws, dental practice act provisions and current issues in the employment setting including social media, bullying and harassment. Participants will gain a better understanding of the dental team member’s roles and responsibilities as guided by current laws and regulations. The outcome will be a wiser dental team prepared to provide top-quality care in a respectful environment.

The 25th Annual Dr. Robert Allen Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Lecture Stuart Lieblich, DMDAnesthesia Considerations for Special Patient Populations: Geriatric, Pediatric and Medically Compromised9 A.M. – NOON; CONTINUES 2 – 5 P.M. (6 CDE CREDITS) – DDS The oral and maxillofacial surgeon is often challenged with the provision of anesthetic care to patients who are very young, very old or have certain medical issues. This program will focus on modifications of our techniques for these individuals.

The 19th Annual Dr. Arthur E. Iwersen Pediatric Symposium Harvey Levy, DMD, MAGDSuccessful Management of Patients with Anxiety or Special Needs9 A.M. – NOON; CONTINUES 2 – 5 P.M. (6 CDE CREDITS) – DDS, DH, AUX

In this session, Dr. Levy will explore how treating patients with anxiety or special needs can be both gratifying and rewarding. He will debunk 29 myths that deter some dental professionals from treating these “difficult” patients and discuss and demonstrate some easy, inexpensive techniques for providing them safe and effective treatment. The morning session will include the use of acupuncture pressure points to open the mouth of uncooperative patients. The afternoon session will include the necessary knowledge and tools to treat a wide variety of autistic, medically compromised and mentally challenged (intellectually disabled) patients, from the apprehensive to the combative – in the office and at off-site locations.

The 23rd Annual Dr. Dan Cruz Memorial Lecture Thomas Salinas, DDSTreatment Advances in Complex Care: The Metamorphosis in Prosthodontic Evolution9 A.M. – NOON; CONTINUES 2 – 5 P.M. (6 CDE CREDITS) – DDS

Surgical and prosthetic reconstruction of complex tooth/arch and maxillofacial defects has evolved over the last three decades. Concurrent technology capabilities have increased the scope of this application, such that pre-operative planning has afforded less operative time and fewer sequential procedures to traverse traditional health care barriers. As much as surgical intervention has evolved, prosthetic material selection has likewise broadened. This presentation will compare advantages of traditional and newer materials for extended applications in complex implant reconstruction.

Ann Spolarich, RDH, PhDThe Older Adult: The New Face of Addiction8:30 A.M. - NOON (3 CDE CREDITS) – DDS, DH, AUX

This session will examine the widespread problem of substance abuse and addiction among older adults. The number of adults aged 50 and older with substance abuse disorders is expected to double by 2020, and treatment admissions for substance abuse in this group have more than doubled since 1992. Dependency on prescription drugs is widespread, and normal physiologic changes in aging alter drug handling in the body. Dr. Spolarich will discuss strategies for how to safely manage these patients in the dental setting.

Botox: Current Trends in Medical and Dental Uses1:30 - 5 P.M. (3 CDE CREDITS) – DDS, DH, AUX

Botox, one of the botulinum toxin drugs derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, has gained popularity in the past 20 years as a cosmetic treatment but has a rich history in treating a wide group of medical and dental maladies. This presentation will provide knowledge of common and emerging uses of the botulinum neurotoxins for dental patients.

Anna Matthews, RDH, MS, and Sandra Stramoski, RDH, MSDHMedical Marijuana: Therapeutic and Clinical Considerations for the Dental Professional8:30 A.M. - NOON (3 CDE CREDITS) – DDS, DH, AUX

Despite the growing evidence of its usefulness in management of cancer, HIV/AIDS, epilepsy and other neurological disorders, cannabis remains illegal under U.S. federal law. Many states and other countries have approved its use for medical purposes, and a growing number of jurisdictions have legalized its recreational use. Two cannabinoid-based drugs are FDA-approved as controlled medications. Dental professionals should be aware of the changing legal landscape regarding marijuana, its identified therapeutic and adverse effects, and oral health considerations.

Google Juice for Dentists: Using the Internet Effectively2 - 5:30 P.M. (3 CDE CREDITS) – DDS, DH, AUX

Like it or not, people judge a dental practice based on its Internet presence and online reputation. User reviews, Google results and webpages matter. However, what matters with Google may not be what the web salesman is trying to sell. Discover the three purposes of an office webpage, how to develop webpages that patients like and, even more importantly, how to use Google to get them there.

Larry Emmott, DDSDigital Workflow: Beyond Paperless9 A.M. – 12:30 P.M. (3 CDE CREDITS) – DDS, DH, AUX

Paperless records are just the beginning. Digital technology ultimately empowers dental team members with a more efficient digital workflow using online communication and electronic services. Digital technology is revolutionizing every aspect of the dental practice, including how to communicate clinical decisions and how to manage the everyday flow of patients and staff in the office.

Theresa Gonzales, DMD, MD, MSSPhysical Examination of the Head and Neck for Dental Care Providers9 A.M. – 12:30 P.M.; CONTINUES 2 - 5:30 P.M. (6 CDE CREDITS) – DDS, DH, AUX

This session is designed to reacquaint the oral health care provider with an organized approach to the physical examination of the head and neck. Diagnosis is the key to patient care, and no therapeutic skill can compensate for an inability to adequately assess and evaluate a patient. A system, therefore, must be developed in history taking and clinical examination to minimize the possibility of missing the underlying pathologic condition. Clinicopathologic correlations will be used to supplement principles of physical diagnosis.
