REGISTERED MARRIAGES IN SORSOGON: 1ST QUARTER 2021 (Preliminary)

Registered marriages decreased by 30.2 percent in the 1st Quarter of 2021

A total of 508 marriages were registered in the Province of Sorsogon for the 1st Quarter of

2021 which shows a decrease of 30.2 percent compared to 728 registered marriages in

the same quarter of 2020.

Among the city/municipality in the province of Sosogon, the top three (3) with the most

number of registered marriages in the 1st Quarter 2021 were Sorsogon City with 24.8 per-

cent or 126 registered marriages, followed by Pilar with 11.6 percent (59), Castilla and

Gubat both with 9.4 percent (48), respectively. On the other hand, Sta. Magdalena recorded

the least number of registered marriages with 0.8 percent or 4 marriages, followed by Bar-

celona with 1.8 percent (9) and Matnog with 2.4 percent or 12 registered marriages in the

said quarter.

January registered the most number of marriages

Most number of marriages in the 1st Quarter of 2021 were registered on January with

38.6 percent or 196 marriages while the least number were recorded on February with

28.7 percent or 146 registered marriages.

Likewise, among the registered marriages on the 1st Quarter of 2021, 85.6 percent or 435

couples got married from January to March 2021; of which, most number of couples mar-

ried on January with 41.6 percent. On the other hand, 73 couples or 14.4 percent of the

total registered marriages occurred before the said semester (see table 1).

Most brides and grooms in the province of Sorsogon married between ages 25 to 29 years old

Most of the brides got married between ages 25 to 29 years old which accounted for 39.2

percent of the total number of brides in the province. Also, most of the grooms got married

at ages 25 to 29 years old, representing 38.4 percent of the total grooms (see Figure 3).

Among the married couple in the 1st Quarter of 2021, women got married at an early age

than men. Most of the bride got married at the age of 25 representing 8.3 percent of the

total brides while most of the groom got married at the age of 28 with 8.6 percent of the

total grooms.

Likewise, data on marriages involving teenagers shows that there are about 8 teenage

brides (31) for every one teenage groom (4) in the 1st Quarter of 2021.

Six out of ten marriages were performed on a civil rites

Among the total marriages recorded in the 1st Quarter of 2021, Six out of ten or 56.1 per-

cent were performed on a civil rites or those marriages solemnized by Mayors and Judg-

es. Moreover, Four out of ten or 36.0 percent marriages were performed on a Roman

Catholic Church rites, 7.5 percent of marriages were performed on other religious rites

and the other 0.4 percent were performed on a Muslim rites (see Figure4).

Most marriages were timely registered

Of the total marriages in the 1st Quarter 2021, 93.9 percent or 477 marriages were timely

registered, meaning the application for the Certificate of Marriage (COM) were submitted

to the Local Civil Registrar’s Office (LCRO) 15 days for ordinary marriage following the sol-

emnization and 30 days for the marriage exempt from license requirement (marriages un-

der EO 209, PD 1083, etc.). On the other hand, 6.1 percent or 31 marriages were late reg-

istered (see Figure 5).

EXPLANATORY NOTES

Data on marriages presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Mar-

riage (Municipal Form No. 97) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil

in the Province of Sorsogon and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority– Sorso-

gon Provincial Office. Information presented include registered marriages which occurred

from January to March 2021. The data are only preliminary results which are based on

the generated table using the Decentralized Vital Statistics System (DVSS) at the PSO.

DEFINITION OF TERMS AND CONCEPTS

Marriage is a special contract of permanent union between a man and a woman en-

tered into in accordance with law for the establishment of conjugal and family life.
