appropriate forum for the research scientists, academia,

veterinarians and farmers active in the field of animal

production and health to introspect the research carried out

till now and also to interact and exchange views regarding

the current research areas, innovations and advances in the

field and also to develop practical approaches to address the

emerging issues and challenges in livestock production and

health in the region. There is also need to develop

appropriate interlinkages between research institutions and

field veterinary professionals to identify research areas and

organization in the field of veterinary sciences. The

Institute - established as Imperial Bacteriological

Laboratory in 1889 in Pune - has a glorious history and

contributed immensely in improving animal health and

productivity and in turn, complementing the food and

nutritional security and protecting human health. The main

focus of IVRI has been developing life saving vaccines,

biological diagnostics, drugs and therapeutic interventions

for important animal and poultry diseases, diseases

monitoring and surveillance, quality control of immuno-

biologicals, nutritional and genetic improvement of

livestock, amelioration of stress, and safety and value

addition to the foods of animal origin. Apart from this, the

Institute is also actively involved in human resource

development in the field of veterinary and animal sciences;

dissemination of technology to the end users through

transfer of technology and extension activities, and

commercialization of technologies and valuable products

for the benefit of stakeholders.

The Regional Station of the IVRI had its inception

thon 26 January, 1959 with the objective of investigating the

animal feeding problems in the North West Himalayan

Region (NWHR) spread over H.P., J & K and the hilly areas

of Uttarakhand. In the late seventies the research mandate

was expanded to carry out detailed disease investigation

and diagnosis work as well. The approach to all research

problems continues to be interdisciplinary covering all

aspects in a very comprehensive manner from fundamental

to field applications in complete continuity. The regional

station has a regular program of field interactions with the

farmers for transfer of knowhow and feed back for

reappraisal of the research programs to make them up to

date and need based. The regional station has linkages and

liaison with State Agricultural University and Institute of

Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR) for

infrastructural facilities, research and academic activities.
